Abstract
A method of treating an animal waste slurry so as to efficiently extract nutrients, and which can be performed in a zero-discharge system, comprises flocculating the slurry, processing, e.g. filtering, the flocculated slurry to separate liquid from solid material, drying the solid material, processing the liquid to extract ammonium, phosphorous and potassium from the slurry, all within 24 hours, and preferably on average within 12 hours, of production of the waste material by animals. Since the urates of potassium and ammonium in the slurry take a few hours to break down, they remain in crystalline form and therefore a larger portion of the total amount of potassium and ammonium in the slurry can be extracted.
Claims (17)
1. A method of treating animal waste material in the form of a slurry, which comprises the steps of:-a) flocculating the slurry;
b) processing the flocculated slurry to separate the slurry into liquid and solid material and thereby to remove a major portion of phosphorous and potassium and at least some nitrogen from the slurry, within a sufficiently short period of time following the production of the waste material by animals, that the removed phosphorous, potassium and nitrogen remain bound in a solid compound;
c) processing the liquid to extract further potassium and ammonia therefrom;
and d) drying the solid material.
b) processing the flocculated slurry to separate the slurry into liquid and solid material and thereby to remove a major portion of phosphorous and potassium and at least some nitrogen from the slurry, within a sufficiently short period of time following the production of the waste material by animals, that the removed phosphorous, potassium and nitrogen remain bound in a solid compound;
c) processing the liquid to extract further potassium and ammonia therefrom;
and d) drying the solid material.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1, which includes performing step c) within a sufficiently short period of time following the production of the slurry by animals that the removed ammonium remains dissolved in the liquid;
3. A method as claimed in claim 2, in which step c) comprises stripping and scrubbing the liquid to produce ammonium salts.
4. A method as claimed in claim 3, which includes adding the ammonium salts to the solid material.
5. A method as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, which includes adding lime to the liquid to extract further phosphorous and precipitate remaining suspended solids from the liquid.
6. A method as claimed in claim 1, 2, or 3, wherein step c) includes employing zeolite to adsorb ammonia from the liquid.
7. A method as claimed in claim 1, 2, 3 or 4, which includes employing zeolite to adsorb further potassium from the liquid in step c).
8. A method as claimed in claim 1, which includes performing step c) within a sufficiently short period of time following the production of the slurry by animals that the removed ammonia remains in solution by stripping and scrubbing the liquid to produce ammonium salts; adding the ammonium salts to the solid material before the solid material is dried;
adding lime to the liquid to extract further phosphorous from the liquid; and employing zeolite to adsorb ammonium and further potassium from the liquid following step b).
adding lime to the liquid to extract further phosphorous from the liquid; and employing zeolite to adsorb ammonium and further potassium from the liquid following step b).
9. A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein steps a) and b) are completed within 12 hours following the production of the waste material by animals.
10. A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein step c) is completed within 24 hours following the production of the waste material by animals.
11. A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 10, which includes performing steps a) through d) in a closed loop zero discharge system.
12. A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 11, in which step b) comprises filtering the waste material.
13. A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 12, which includes performing steps a) through d) without releasing any gaseous pollution to the atmosphere.
14. A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 13, in which step a) comprises treating the material with a substance selected from the group consisting of ferrous sulphate, polymer and lime before step b).
15. A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 14, which includes treating the waste material with acid to reduce the pH of the waste material to less than 6 prior to step a).
16. A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 14, which includes treating the waste material with acid to reduce the pH of the waste material to less than 6 prior to step b).
17. A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 16, which includes treating the liquid with a unease inhibitor to increase said period of time.
