Abstract

The invention relates to a device for testing cables that are provided with plug connectors, comprising a number of adapters (4), each of which is provided with a plug connector receiving element which is allocated to a particular plug connector; a measuring unit (5), a computer (6) for evaluating the data determined by said measuring unit (5), a storage device (9) for receiving plug connector or adapter-specific data and a PC (1) to which a monitor is connected. The inventive device is configured in such a way that each adapter (4) is allocated a measuring unit (5), a computer (6), a storage device (9), and a test point electronics unit (7) which is connected to the PC
(1) by a bus (2).

Description

DEVICE FOR TESTING CABLES PROVIDED WITH PLUGS
The present invention relates to a device for testing cables provided with plugs according to the preamble of claim 1.
By means of such devices, cables are checked for continuity and attached plugs are checked for correct securement. Such cables provided with plugs are used, for example, in the automotive industry, whereby the device tests in particular cables united to harnesses, i.e. a plurality of cables, can be tested at the same time.
Each adapter includes a plug receptacle which has a configuration complementing a particular plug so that only this one plug can be inserted in the respective plug receptacle.
Since a plug is attached to each cable end, each cable requires two adapters.
The known devices have adapters which are connected to a common storage in which the respective plug-specific data must be inputted by hand. In particular, in those situations in which a plurality of cables is to be simultaneously tested which require a corresponding number of adapters, a manual input is very complicated and time-consuming. Also the exchange of adapters, for example for testing new plugs, is cumbersome to handle and unsuitable for a optimization of the entire test process, whereby in any case the new plug-specific data must be inputted.
Naturally, the error rate of a manual input, in particular when a plurality of plugs is involved, is fairly large, so that a reliable testing of the cables and/or plugs is not ensured.
Heretofore, a measuring technique is provided that is common for all adapters and requires, however, a complex electric connection to the individual adapters.
The measuring technique is received in a so-called matrix which in a way forms a base for attachment of the individual adapters. As a result, the fabrication becomes hereby relatively complex, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, the further attachment of additional adapters is problematic and can be implemented only through complicated configuration.
The present invention is therefore based on the object to so develop a device of the afore-stated type which is simple in structure, optimized for handling and has improved range of application.
This object is solved by a device, which has the features of claim 1.
Through this structural configuration, by which each adapter has a separate measuring technique, a computer as well as a storage, all relevant data can be retrieved immediately, without requiring a manual input of the plug-specific data directly at the test desk. Rather, these data are inputted at the factory end during production and configuration of the adapter. This is also true for all three named components, which are suitably integrated in a common structural unit for connection to the adapter.
This structural unit in turn is connected to a bus which is connected to the PC
communicating with a monitor for displaying the determined data.
In general, any number of structural units and thus any number of adapters may be connected to the bus, thereby significantly improving the range of application of the entire device.
The quasi-integration of the components, required for the test of the cable, in the adapter further simplifies the handling as well as eliminates, or at least minimizes, also possible error causes through faulty operation.
According to an advantageous design of the invention, the storage is directly integrated in the adapter, thereby even further simplifying the fabrication.
Further advantageous configurations of the invention are set forth in the sub-claims.
An exemplified embodiment of the invention will now be described with respect to the attached drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 shows a schematic illustration of a device according to the invention;
FIG. 2 shows also a schematic illustration of a portion of the device.
FIG. 1 shows a device for testing cables provided with plugs and having a plurality of adapters 4. Connected to each adapter is a structural unit 3 which contains for each assigned adapter 4 a measuring technique 5, a bus controller with computer 6, a test point electronics 7, a digital interface 8 as well as a storage 9 (FIG. 2).
Each structural unit 3 is connected to a bus 2 via which also a power supply is effected.
The bus 2 is connected to a PC 1 which forms a central interface and has a monitor for display of test results.
The digital interface 8 is to be provided, if necessary, and serves for a control of the adapter for special functions, for example, for control of pneumatic valves, with which locking devices, arranged in the adapter, can be actuated.
In a manner known per se, test prods and/or similar components, required for the continuity of the cable and testing the locked disposition of the plug, are provided in the adapter 4.

Claims (5)

1. Device for testing cables provided with plugs, having a plurality of adapters (4) which are each provided with a plug receptacle assigned to a particular plug, a measuring technique (5), a computer (6) for evaluating the data determined by the measuring technique (5), a storage (9) for receiving plug-specific data and adapter-specific data, respectively, and a PC (1) to which a monitor is connected, characterized in that each adapter (4) has associated therewith a measuring technique (5), a computer (6), a storage (9) as well as a test point electronics (7), which are connected via a bus (2) to the PC (1).
2. Device according to claim 1, characterized in that the measuring technique (5), the computer (6), the storage (9) and the test point electronics (7) are united in a structural unit (3).
3. Device according to claim 1, characterized in that the storage (9) is integrated in the adapter (4).
4. Device according to claim 1, characterized in that each adapter (4) has associated thereto a digital interface (8) for control of the adapter at special functions.
5. Device according to claim 1, characterized in that a power supply of the structural unit (3) is realized via the bus (2).
