Abstract

Les pertes dues à cette imprécision peuvent varier de 5% à 20% sur le rendement matière.1.0 PROBLEM The financial and environmental profitability of a sawmill depends in large part on the value added to the raw material which is logs. It is therefore important to maximize the volume of product processed for each log. This is called material yield. To do this, current sawing systems read the shape of each bill using a scanner, adjust the cutting tools and turn the log at the angle that will be most favorable to the material yield. However, imperfections in the shape of the balls (knots, holes, ovality, etc.) limit the precision of the rotation. The losses due to this imprecision can vary from 5% to 20% on the material yield.

Description

2.0 DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The invention in question applies to sawing logs and relates to the rotation of the logs before sawing.
Current ball rotation systems operate blind. That is, say that they rotate the ball by a certain angle, previously calculated by a analyzer, without checking whether the desired position has been reached. The invention proposed allows to perform a position check during the rotation.
It is a camera and analyzer system that can read the angle of the ball in real time during rotation. So we can have a system in closed loop. The motion control with the ball turn is in operation of the angle reading. When the ball is at the right angle, the analyzer orders the movement to stop. If the angle of the ball changes during advance in the machine, corrections can be made before the cutting tools don't start working.
January 15, 2001 Jean-Pierre Perreault G .. sAwau ~ p Patent application Ball rotation system closed loop wood 2.0 DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION (CONTINUED) The system can operate in two ways: The first is to read the shape of the tip of the ball as it passes through the scanner and compare this image with the one read during rotation to deduce the angle. We must then rely on ball defects as benchmarks for detect the angle. See figure 1.
For balls with few significant defects, it is possible to add a ball marking system. The brand thus produced can easily be recognized by the camera (s). See figure 2.
