Description
CONSUMER PROFILE DETERMINATION AND VALIDATION AND METHOD
AND SYSTEM FOR USING THE SAME
Field of the invention The present invention relates to a consumer profile, to a determination and validation thereof, and to a method and system for using the same.
Descriution of the prior art The present invention is intimately related to co-pending Canadian application no. 2.293.031 of December 20, 1999, equivalent to U.S. provisional application no. 601172.595 of December 20, 1999.
The present invention concerns a system and method for building a consumer profile and use therefor.
In the field of consumer fidelity, a number of techniques have been proposed. All of the techniques purport to more accurately track consumer behaviour in order to target specific products or services to the tracked consumer.
Alternatively, some techniques have been proposed to attempt to predict which item within a list would best suit a customer's needs. Although these techniques have met with relative success, they focus on trying to predict which item is best for the consumer, as opposed to determining a more basic question, such as "does the customer actually need the item" and what item is ideally suited.
This difference in approach is important.
Furthermore, the co-pending applications describe a system which is particularly suited for a provider of services or goods. However, in some instances, a consumer will not want personal information to be used by a third party.
2 Summary of the invention Consequently, the present invention concerns a method and apparatus for using a consumer profile built according to the method described in the co-pending applications, wherein the profile of the consumer remains private, and it is the consumer's profile that goes looking for products or services that best meet the consumer's requirements within a database of profiled services and products.
Brief descriution of the drawings The present invention and its advantages will be more easily understood after reading the following non-restrictive description of preferred embodiments thereof, made with reference to the following drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic representation of the method and apparatus according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention.
Description of a preferred embodiment of the invention The co-pending applications refer to a method and system for building a database of consumer consumption behaviour, and describes its use, in a preferred embodiment, in the financial services sector.
The present invention is a different use for the database of consumer consumption behaviour. In the co-pending applications, the database is accessed and reviewed by the concerned industry participant, so as to better understand his or her client, and thus better design focused offerings to suit the exact profile of the client.
The present invention provides that the database is accessed and reviewed by the contributing consumer himself or herself.
The consumer, by means of the database profile, accesses an industry's general database, or various web sites directly, and searches out a service or product offering that is best suited to the needs as identified in the industry database or the web site as per the supplier's description.

3 The profile of the consumer thus remains private, and it is the consumer's profile that goes looking for products or services that best meet the requirements.
However, the industry participants never obtain the private profile information of the consumer. The suppliers of products and services are being evaluated for their suitability to meet the intended consumer's needs, and not the consumer being evaluated as to meeting the profile of the product or service being proposed.
Consequently, the consumer goes looking for existing goods and services that best respond to the needs identified. However, the query information and the profile itself remain private.
Once the appropriate product or service has been identified, the consumer approaches the supplier to conduct the desired transaction. The consumer identifies himself or herself to the supplier, and not the other way around.
The profile, as mentioned previously remains confidential, and so information privacy concerns are considerably alleviated. The consumer remains the sole owner of the profile, and is not flooded with unwanted promotions from companies that have purchased consumer lists that contain the customer's identity and consumption profile.
Although the present invention has been explained hereinabove by way of a preferred embodiment thereof, it should be pointed out that any modifications to this preferred embodiment within the scope of the appended claims is not deemed to alter or change the nature and scope of the present invention.
