Abstract
A process involving the catalytic oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide in an oxygen- and NO x -containing feed gas comprising feeding the feed gas having a NO x first concentration to a catalyst bed containing a SO2 oxidizing catalyst to provide a sulfur trioxide-containing gaseous product, the improvement comprising feeding a gaseous NO x reducing agent in admixture with the feed gas to the catalyst bed to effect reduction of the NO x and provide the gaseous product having a NO x concentration of less than the first concentration. The process provides sulfuric acid of greatly reduced nitrosyl sulfuric acid contamination.
