Abstract
A vegetarian dietary supplement drug specially formulated to provide the nutrients which can be deficient in the Vegetarian diet. This supplement will provide a unique combination of the potentially deficient nutrients including Vitamin B2, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, Zinc and Calcium. The supplement will be taken orally in the form of tablets, capsules, liquid or powder in a recommended daily dosage. The recommended daily dosage will supply these nutrients in levels which will considerably contribute towards the prevention of nutrient deficiencies associated with the vegetarian diet and the onset of medical conditions associated with such deficiencies.
Description
Petition for Grant of a Patent Title: Vegetarian Dietary Supplement Drug Applicant: Nancy Leigh Partridge, BASc., Dietitian Page 3 of 7 Field of Invention The invention relates to a dietary supplement drug which is specifically formulated to supplement the nutritional deficits of the Vegetarian diet (including Vegan, Lacto-Vegetarian and Lacto-ovo-Vegetarian diets).
Background of Invention Vegetarianism is a dietaxy practice which involves the abstention from eating meat, poultry, fish, or other animal products. As a result of these dietary exclusions several nutrients can become limited and or omitted from the diet. The nutrients which are of greatest risk of being deficient in the Vegetarian diet include the following:
Vitamins ~ Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) ~ Vitamin Bl2 (Cyanocobalamin) ~ Vitamin D
Minerals ~ Iron ~ Zinc ~ Calcium (for Vegans) Each of these nutrients are associated with deficiency states which can result from inadequate intakes. The following are examples of such deficiency states:
~ angular stomatitis, glossitis, cheilosis and corneal vascularization (associated with B2 deficiency) Petition for Grant of a Patent Title: Vegetarian Dietary Supplement Drug Applicant: Nancy Leigh Partridge, BASc., Dietitian Page 4 of 7 ~ macrocytic anemia, pernicious anemia, leukopenia and thrombocytopenia (associated with B 12 deficiency) ~ rickets, osteomalacia, hypophophatemia and hypocalcemia (associated with Vitamin D deficiency) ~ tachycardia, microcytic hypochromic anemia, koilonychia and enteropathy (associated with Iron deficiency) ~ growth retardation, hypogonadism, hypogeusia and anorexia (associated with Zinc deficiency) ~ Tetany, arrhythmias, congestive heart failure and osteomalicia (associated with calcium deficiency) With adequate dietary supplementation these deficiency states can be prevented.
Reference to Prior Art Current practice in this area is to enhance the diet with foods which contain sufficient amounts of these nutrients. However, this practice requires considerable knowledge in the area of nutritional science and great attention to daily dietary consumption. This may also require the consumption of large amounts of particular foods or the consumption of foods which are found to be unacceptable, undesirable or even inaccessible to some vegetarians.
The advantage of the Vegetarian Dietary Supplement drug to this practice is that the Vegetarian does not require difficult dietary planning or extensive knowledge of nutrition and is not forced to consume prescribed food items in order to prevent nutrient deficiencies. One dose of the Vegetarian Dietary Supplement Drug can provide a Vegetarian the deficient vitamins and minerals in amounts which can significantly contribute to the prevention of nutrient deficiencies. It therefore provides a more convenient and simple Petition for Grant of a Patent Title: Vegetarian Dietary Supplement Drug Applicant: Nancy Leigh Partridge, BASc., Dietitian Page 5 of 7 method of supplementation as well as offering vegetarians a greater sense of confidence in the safety of their diet.
Other methods of supplementing the Vegetarian diet is though the use of currently available supplements. These supplements are available in the forms of single vitamin or mineral supplements (e.g. Vitamin D supplement or Calcium supplement) or general multivitamin supplements. The disadvantage of the single supplements is that it is inefficient both in terms of costs involved as well as the amount of doses which must be taken.
Furthermore, the Vegetarian may be unaware as to which vitamins and minerals supplements they require.
The disadvantage of the multivitamin supplements is that they are not customized according to a Vegetarians nutrient needs and provide numerous nutrients which are not necessarily required or desired by a Vegetarian.
Furthermore, these supplements are large and as a result can be difficult for some individuals to swallow. Both the single supplements and the multivitamin supplements may include products which are of animal origin and therefore may be unacceptable to Vegetarians.
The advantage of the Vegetarian Dietary Supplement Drug to the aforementioned options are that it provides a customized dietary supplement product which provide the nutrients which can be deficient in the Vegetarian diet and ensures that all ingredients are of a non-animal based origin. As the vegetarian dietary supplement contains significantly less ingredients than a general multivitamin supplements it is smaller in size and can be easier for some individuals to swallow. This supplemental drug can eliminate the need for vegetarians to engage in difficult dietary regimens or to consume unacceptable foods in order to meet nutrient needs. It also can provide the vegetarian with some security that the vitamins and minerals which are lacking in the vegetarian diet are supplemented by this drug. Once again this drug offers an easier and more convenient method of supplementing the Vegetarian diet.
Petition for Grant of a Patent Title: Vegetarian Dietary Supplement Drug Applicant: Nancy Leigh Partridge, BASc., Dietitian Page 6 of 7 Summary of Invention It is the object of this drug to supplement the vegetarian diet with the nutrients which can be deficient as a result of the exclusion of animal products from the diet. The goal of this drug is to significantly supplement the vegetarian diet with the deficient nutrients in order to prevent the onset of related dietary deficiency syndromes and contribute to the maintenance of normal nutritional status. The nutrients which will be supplemented by this drug include Vitamin B2, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, Zinc and Calcium.
The vegetarian dietary supplement is to be taken orally in the form of tablets, capsules, liquid or powder in a recommended dosage on a daily basis. One dosage of this supplement will provide the following active ingredients in the specified amounts:
Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) l.8mg Vitamin Bl2 (Cyanocobalamin) 2mcg Vitam in D 400IU
Iron l5mg (from ferrous sulfate) Zinc l5mg (from zinc sulfate) Calcium 200mg (from calcium carbonate) This supplement will also contain other non-medicinal ingredients which will serve as product binders, fillers, solvents and preservatives, all of which are of non-animal origin. In fact none of the ingredients included in this supplement are of animal origin, therefore making it suitable and acceptable for even the most strict vegetarian diet.
This drug offers a new alternative to dietary supplementation of the vegetarian diet though the customization of a drug to meet the unique nutritional needs and dietary practice requirements of the vegetarian population. The vegetarian dietary supplement drug holds distinct advantages over currently available approaches in that it provide vegetarians Petition for Grant of a Patent Title: Vegetarian Dietary Supplement Drug Applicant: Nancy Leigh Partridge, BASc., Dietitian Page 7 of 7 with a more convenient, simple, safe and efficient method of enhancing the nutritional balance of the vegetarian diet.
