Abstract

A pressure or blast release is disclosed for use on the burn chamber of a thermal refractor or other waste incineration unit. The release of the present invention comprises a spring loaded blast door which will blow open upon the over-pressuring of the interior of the burn chamber, either from overworking of the unit or the explosion or burning of a fuel cell within the waste being treated. Once the pressure within the burn chamber decreases the release of the present invention closes itself and normal operation call continue.

This invention is in the field of thermal refr~xc.tors and waste incinerators. snore specifically, the invention is in the field of safety measures used on these devices in the event of an explosion or over pressuring within the burn chamber.
to Thermal refractors or other waste incinerators are used to destroy or sterilize all types of waste materials, gases and -the like. One safety hazard of these units is an explosion is within the burn chamber which if of sufficient magnitude could cause bodily harm to operators of the device, as well as harm to the machine itself if the force of the explosion were -sufficient enough to cause the burn chamber itself to break or exglode.
Whale one method of avoiding such a catastrophe is to Carefully monitor the Qperator of such units and ensure that ' S-;~~-aa; a:SaaM;rurmen t4 rceW ~o Hga L~N~: no tWe no. ;+~ dub ~Sa ba56 7F
W 1;i r&ic 626-06-o1 - Page they are not overtaxed or allowed to over pressure within the burn. chamber, the problem still exists that a fuel cell might i exist within the waste material being burned which could explode within the burn chamber. This possibility is a safety s concern which has not been sufficiently addressed by thermal refractors a~COd other high temperature waste incinerators in use currently - particularly those of a movable or portable variety.

Tt is the object of the present iiaventian to provide a pressure or blast release for the waste burn chamber of a os thermal refractor or other waste incinerator.
The invention accomplishes this comprising, in assgnce, a spring loaded blast door set in the wall or roof of the burn chamber of a thermal refractor or other incinerator. 'GVhen an zp explosion or over pressure occurs within the burn ChaYnber, 'Ghe pressure release door will be opened automatically and tha pressure allowed Go dissipate within the burn chamber at which _ _._ _ _.._- _ _ - ~-. ~ ,. ,. . .... , .. . ."...... , . ,. . ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ .. j time the pressure re7.ease door will close itself and set itself back is glace.
The pressure release door of the present invention could be s hinged a~.ong one edge and allowed to open and close in that fashion, with the spring or other tensioning apparatus pulling the free edge og the pressuxe release door closed.
Alternatively, where the thickness of the pressure release i0 door or any portion of an insulating liner a'CtaChed or coriteirxed therein is such that a straight outward hinging motion is not possible, the pressure release door could be rigged in place such that it moved straight outwards from its closed position in the wall of the burn chamber, within a is guide defining its possible range of movement, The tensioning mechanism used on the prcsstzre release door might be a spring loaded mechanism, a piston, ox any othex means of allowing for the opening of the pressure release door zo at a particular pressure level within the burn chamber, and then automatically and rapidly closlxig such door once the pressure within the burn chamber has beers allowed to dissigate_ J JI ~:l:/~ V~JJI".IVI,i VIIIIG111 Uf IVUI I IV f~fJU 41r~V~ IIV I I IG IIV. ~

The release of the present invention will be particularly useful oz's mpvable or portable thermal refractor units, although it could also bt practised on more elaborate permanent instz~llations.
s While the invention is claimed in the concluding portions to hereof , preferred embodiments are provided in the accompanying deta,~,led description which may be best understood in conjunction with the accompanying diagrams where like parts in each of the several diagrams are labeled with like numbers, and where:
