Abstract

There is described a scaffold assembly, the major component of which is an arch frame comprised of two vertical uprights and at least one horizontal rail. The arch frame is fitted with attachment means that allows for its attachment to the other framing elements of the scaffold assembly.

Description

SCAFFOLD ASSEMBLY
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a scaffold assembly. More particularly, the invention relates to an arch frame used in the construction of the scaffold assembly.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Scaffold assemblies are temporary structures that are used at a site of construction to aid builders in their access to the structure being worked upon. Prior systems incorporate modular assemblies which include a series of ledgers and platforms that can be fastened together using connectors similar to those disclosed within U.S. Patent No. 4,180,342 to Layher. These systems however include numerous elements and are often cumbersome to assemble at the desired site and are difficult to manipulate at the various levels.
There remains a need for an improved scaffold assembly that minimizes the number of parts within the assembly while maintaining the modular nature of the scaffolding.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of the present invention to provide a scaffolding assembly that is an improvement over the prior art.
The present scaffold assembly has many advantages. It includes as one of its components the arch frame which is a vertical upright with attached horizontal rail. This component provides means for attachment to the base of the scaffold assembly and means along its length for attachment to each of the other framing components, thereby allowing the scaffolding structure to be erected easily.
In a broad aspect, then, the present invention relates to an arch frame for use in the construction of a scaffold assembly, said arch frame comprising; two vertical uprights integral with at least one horizontal rail at the upper ends of said vertical uprights, wherein the vertical uprights include means for attachment to the other components of the scaffold assembly, and wherein the vertical uprights have open ends for attachment to the base of the scaffold assembly.
In a further broad aspect, the present invention relates to a scaffold assembly including at least two arch frames, said arch frames comprising two vertical uprights integral with at least one horizontal rail at the upper ends of said vertical uprights, wherein the vertical uprights include attachments means for attachment to the other components of the scaffold assembly, and wherein the vertical uprights of the arch frame have open ends for attachment to the base of the scaffold assembly.
Other advantages, objects and features of the present invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art from a review of the following detailed descriptions of the preferred embodiments in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and claims.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Preferred embodiments of the present invention will now be described in greater detail, and will be better understood when read in conjunction with the following drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side perspective view of the scaffold assembly.
Figure 2 is a top perspective view of the base support attachment Figure 3 is a front perspective view of the attachment of the arch frame with the base support.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Referring to figure 1, the scaffold assembly 1 comprises arch frames 15, base ledgers 5, base supports 10, and side panels 25 all of which interconnect to form the scaffold assembly 1. The novelty of the invention lies primarily in the arch frame 15 which is a pre-formed unit, including at least two vertical uprights 20 bridged by at least one, and preferably a pair of, horizontal rails 21.The arch frame 15 is the vertical support element for the scaffold assembly.
Unlike other scaffolding assemblies known in the art, the vertical uprights 20 and horizontal rails 21 are permanently attached and as such the arch frame 15 is of a form that is convenient for attachment to the other elements of the scaffolding. Moreover, the base of the vertical uprights 20 have open ends which allow the vertical uprights 20 to attach to the base supports 10. Referring to figure 2, the base supports 10 are of the type common to the trade and include a first recessed member 12, a rosette 13, a wedge 14 and a base post 16, the interconnection of which is described in U. S. Patent No. 4,180,342. The arch frames 15 fit over the base posts 16 telescopically (figure 3), however it will be obvious to one skilled in the art that any number of attachment means can be used to attach the arch frame 15 to the base posts 16 without deviating from the functioning of the invention.
Along the length of the vertical upright 20 there are additional rosettes 13 and attachment members which facilitate the attachment of side panels 25. The horizontal rail 21 of the arch frame 15 is similarly accommodated with attachment means for the attachment of ledgers 5 thereby forming a frame for a second working level to which support surfaces 26 accommodated with hook or clip attachments can be secured.
In a preferred embodiment, the arch frames 15 are installed at vertical intervals not exceeding three times the minimum width of the scaffold assembly 1 and at every third bay of the scaffolding longitudinally. It will be obvious to one skilled in the art that the vertical uprights 20 can be of any convenient length to accommodate scaffold assemblies 1 of various heights.
In order to construct the scaffold assembly 1, the user must first lay out the base ledgers 5 into a desired rectangular arrangement wherein they can be connected to one another using base supports 10. The arch frames 15 can be added to the scaffold assembly 1 by telescopically securing the arch frames 15 over the base posts 16. Support surfaces 26 can be placed into the structure by using clipping means attached to the periphery of the support surface.
Handrail panels can be installed and can be added to the base frame of the second level to create a working platform.
Diagonal braces can be fitted at desired locations across the face of the bay to add needed stability to the structure. Scaffolding may be completed by adding accessories, such as, end-midrails, handrails, end-panels and toe boards to the working platforms.
Numerous modifications, variations and adaptations may be made to the particular embodiments of the invention described above without departing from the scope of the invention, which is defined in the claims.
