Abstract
A method for forming a score in a strip of laminate, for example cardboard, which laminate comprises a number of pressed-together 1 ayers, which are glued together, after which the score is formed in said strip of laminate. The application of glue between the various layers makes the strip of laminate being formed relatively soft. Then the score is pressed into the relatively soft strip of laminate, whereby the thickness of the score will be less than that of the strip of laminate.
Following that curing of the laminate takes place.

Description
METHOD FOR FORMING A SCORE IN A STRIP OF LAMINATE. AS WELL AS A
HINGED ANGLE SECTION
Field of the Invention The i rwenti on rE:~l ates to a method for formi ng a score i n a stri p of 1 ami nate, for exarnpl a cardbc>ar°d , whi ch 1 ami nate compri ses a number of pressed-together layers glued together, after which the score is formed in said strip of laminate.
The invention also relates to a hinged angle section provided by such a method.
Back4round of the Invention A method is known 'from German utility model 9215121.9, in which a number of layers of cardboard are glued together, with no glue being applied at the location of the score t:o be formed. The score is then pressed into the strip of cardboaroi. After the score has been formed, the layers of cardboard are spaced closer together on either side of the score than at the location of the score. As a result of this, the thickness of the cardboard strip on either side of the strip is smallew 'than at the location of t:he score. One drawback of such a method is the i-act that the selective leaving out of glue is relatively laborious, whilsi: furthermore the intended improved hinge effect is not achieved in practice. As an alternative, it is proposed in the utility model to detach the layers from each other near the score by means of an upsetting operation. Such a method is relatively laborious and requires an extreme process control in order to be able to effect the correct degree of upsetting. Also with this method the hinged angle section that is obtained is not very satisfa<aory in practice.
Accordi ngly, them i nventi on seeks to provi de a method wherei n a score can be formed in a strip of laminate in a simple and reliable manner.
Summary of the Invention Generally the m~.ethod according to the invention provides that the application of glue between tree various layers is such to make the strip of laminate being formed relatively soft, the score is subsequently pressed into the relatively soft strip of laminat:e, whereby the thickness of the score will be less than that of the strip of laminate. after which curing of the laminate takes place.
The 1 ami nate bei ng formed i s softened as a resul t of the appl i cati on of glue to the various layers and the heating that may take place. if desired.
The material properties of the laminate in this soft condition appear to be ideal for forming a score. ~~o that after subsequent: curing of the glue a score i s obta i ned whi ch readi 1 y al 1 ows bendi ng wi thout thi s caus i ng the va ri ous 1 avers of the 1 ami nate to break or l:ear . B,y formi ng the score i n the 1 ami nat,e when i t is relatively soft, the physical properties of the laminate are utilized optimally. Since furthermore the layers are pressed closer together at the 1 ocati on of the score than on ei ther s i de thereof , bendi ng of the stri p of laminate is further simplified.
The 'invention in one aspect pertains to a method for forming an angle section, comprising the steps of providing a strip of laminate comprising a number of prep ressed-toc:~ether layers of material taken from t;he group consisting of paper and cardboard, wherein an adhesive is applied between adjacent 1 avers for bondi ng the 1 avers together and maki ng the stri p of 1 ami nate relatively soft. folding thf_~ strip of softened laminate into an angle section whereby the strip of softened laminate is divided into first and second parts extending transversely to each other, forming a recess in the first part of the angle section of softened laminat:e defining first and second portions of the first part, pressing a score into the second part of the angle section of softened laminate to form a score line in the second part of the angle section of softened laminate in a direction transversely to the first part, whereby the second part of the angle sc,ction of the softened laminate is divided into a scored portion containing toe score line and unscored portions on either side of the score line and cur-ng the scored laminate angle section. wherein a thi ckness of the cured 1 ami nate angl a secti on i n the scored porn on of the second portion is less than a thickness of the laminate in the unscored portions.
Further the invention comprehends the further step of pivoting the curved angled section about the score line until the first and second portions of the first part contact eacf7 other to form a hinged angle section.
In thi s way a hi aged ang 1 a secti on i s obtai ned whi ch al 1 ows repeated hinging without the layers of the laminate breaking or tearing thereby.

Fi gure 4 i s an enl a rged detai 1 of the fol ded angl a secti on of Fi gure 3A.
Corresponding parts are indicated by the same numerals in the Figures.
Description of Preferred Embodiments of the Invention Fi gure 1 shows a h~i nged angl a secti on 1 accordi ng to the i nventi on , which comprises two parts 2. 3 extending transversely to each other, whereby fi rst part 2 i s provi ded wi th a rec:e ss 6 whi ch i s bounded by edges 4, 5 . Edges 4, 5 include an angle of 45" with second part 3. At the transition between edges 4. 5 and second part 3, second part 3 is provided with a recess 7 (see Figure 3B). Recess 6 dividees first part ~ into two portions 2', 2". Second part 3 i s provi ded wi th a score 8 centra 11 y between porti ons 2' . 2" , whi ch score divides second part into a p~::~rtion ~3', which is contiguous to portion 2' and a portion 3", which is contiguous to portion 2".
As car be seen in Figure 2, angle section 1 is made of a laminate built up of cardboard layers 9, whereby thickness Dl at the location of portions 3', 3" is greater than thickness DZ at the location of the score 8 formed in second abortion 3.
As can furthermore be seen in Figure 2, edges 4. 5 of 10 portions 2', 2" are provided with rouroied corners 11 near score 8.
The forming of Binged angle section 1. and the movement of hinged angle section 1 will be discussed in more detail.
A number of rolls of for example cardboard layers are placed into a machine, after which the~:,e rolls of cardboard layers are unwound and the layers are fed to a gluing station. Glue is then applied to the cardboard layers and the cardboard layers are heated, which results in the cardboard layers becoming soft. The varwious cardboard layers are now moved together and pressed into an angle secticon, thereby forming parts 2, 3. Now recesaes 6, 11 are formed in the angle seci::ions, which are st ill soft and score 8 is pressed i nto second part 3 wi thout scweri ng the cardboard 1 avers as can be seen i n , a . g .
Figures 2 and 4. The soft layers 9 are pressed so tightly together at the location of score 8 that, aY~ter the glue has cur°ed, the thickness D2 of score 8 i s smal 1 er than the thi ckness Dl of the porti ons 3' , 3" present on ei ther si de of score 8.
After the glue has completely cured, the angle section 1 may be formed. To this end portions 2", 3" are pivoted in a airection indicated by arrow Pl with respect to portions 2', 3', until edges 4, 5 butt against each other (see Figure 3A). The cardboard angle section thus formed may be used as a protecting piece during trvansport of products having vulnerable edges, such as tables and cupaoards. Tlre angle section thus formed may also function to strengthen corners of boxes In addition to a:~eing used for forming hinged angle sections, the method accordi ng to true i nver~ti on ma,y a1 so be ~,~sed for formi ng a score i n a cardboard sheet.
