Abstract
This invention, called "Distributed Fiberoptic Ice Detector", (DFOID) detects an early formation of ice at multiple, distributed locations on surfaces it is attached to.
DFOID may be thought of as a generalization of FOID (fiberoptic ice detector), an earlier patent (application CIPO# 2,048,991) by the same inventor. While FOID
accomplishes ice detection at either (i) single or (ii) multiple (distributed) locations, DFOID is intended for the latter task such that the response from the individual, distributed detection-locations is equalized. Alternatively, instead of equalization, conformity to a pre-specified rule describing how the response should vary from one to another location may be achieved.
Just like FOID, DFOID is also based on the light diffusion by ice and light reflection from ice boundaries that optically couple multimode optical fibres in specially built sensitive zones distributed along the fibre. A most widespread use of this invention is expected in the aircraft industry for remote detection of ice formation around critical parts - wings (and hinges of command surfaces in particular).
