Abstract

The invention relates to a box (100) for packaging and presentation made of board, comprising two separable elements (110, 120) assembled by being fitted to one another, one of the said elements forming a presentation tray (110) and the other forming a closure lid (120), each element being produced by cutting and folding a board blank so as to form a base (111, 121) bordered by four walls (112, 113, 114, 115, 122, 123, 124, 125), at right angles which rise perpendicularly to the said base. According to the invention, the closure lid has a front wall (124) and a back wall (125) with different heights h1, h2, the height h1 of the front wall being sufficient to cover the majority of the front face of the box, while the height h2 of the back wall is less than the height h1 of the front wall, so that after the closure lid has been fitted onto the presentation tray, the said back wall only partially covers the back wall (115) of the said presentation tray, over a height which is sufficient for locking the front wall of the said lid on the front face of the box to prevent the box from being opened by lifting and/or pivoting forwards the back wall of the closure lid.

"PACgAGING AND DISPLAY UNIT FOR PRuvu~lS~' The pre~ent invention relates in general to board packaging, and more particularly to a box for pac~aging and pre~entation made of board, comprising two separable elements ass~led by being ~itted to one another, o~e o~
the said elements ~orming a presentation tray and the other ~or~ny a closure lid, each element being produced by cutting and folding a board blank so as to form a ba~e bordered by four wall~, pair2 of which form a right angle and which ri~e perpendicularly to the said base A particularly ad~antageo~ application o~ the invention lB ~or packaging and presenting object~ shaped as a flexible pouch, for example packets o~ ~;ma- ~ood.
A box of the aforementioned type i8 already known, having a lower par~ intended to contain the objects to be packaged and a clos~re lid which i 2 ~te~ded to completely cover the ~ide walls of the aaid l~wer part.
Furth~rmore, document EP-637 548 discloses a packagi~g box ~orming a display unit composed o~ two ~2eparable elements inserted into one a~other, one of which forms a display tray, each element being made o~ a ~heet of board cut and ~cored to ~orm panel~2 defining the ~ide walls of the box, which are bordered by wing~2 respectively constituting the upper and lower end walls, the two element~ being joined by means allowing them to be ~eparated to ~orm a box o~ the American box type S~ch a box i8 closed using an adhesive tape covering the junction betwee~ the two ~pper wing8 when folded down, over the entire length of the said box.
~ccording to this doc~ent, the separation mean-~
co~sist o~ cut-out~ in one of the panels o~ the element forming a tray, at a di~ta3ce ~rom it~ upper edge and ~ixed to the corre~pon~in~ wall of the other element ~owever, the a~orementioned boxe~ ln the prior 3~ art have a n~mber o~ drawbacks ~ irstly, prod~ction o~ these boxes doe~ ~ot allow optimlzation o~ the mass o~ board ~ployed Fur~T~ore, the packaging and presentation ~ox disclosed ~y document EP-637 ~8 ha~ relati~ely complex W O 97/12812 PCT~B96/01036 mean~ ~or securing and separatins the two element~, invol~ing precut line~ and ~nap-~astened a-~embly.
Fur~h~rm~re, in the packaging boxes ~o~mi~ a display unlt in the prior art, and in particular the one described in document ~P-637 ~48, it i~ of ten neces~ary to use auxiliary sy~tem~ to pre~ent the objects arranged in a row in~ide the presentation tray ~rom tilting forward~ when thi~ tray is placed open on a shop ~hel~.
Such a ~ystem may consi~t o~ a~ open-worked plastic plate arranged in the bottom of the presentatio~
tray to enclose the baAe o~ the products arranged ~nside ~he tray and hold the~ ~prigh~ therein.
Another a~Y; l; ~y ~ystem which may be pro~ided i3 a sheet of board which iB positioned inclined in the botto~ o~ the presentation tray, so a~ to define a bac~ward~ ~lope i~ the -~aid tray in order to in~l ;~e the objects arranged therein backwards.
Finally, it is also pos~ible to pro~ide a folded board system placed in the bottQm of the presentation tray, t-h;8 board bei~Lg openwor3~ed to form groove~3 into which the said object~ are slid.
All these ~Y;liary sy3tem~ are complicated to produce, requiring the use of additional material ~nd t~k; n~ up volume in the presentation tray. The a~ailable space For packing i~ therefore reduced. ~ur~he~more, these ~yst~ require additional manpower ~or ~itting them inside the presentation tray, which increase3 the production cost o~ the filled, ready-to-use packaging and pre~entation box.
In order to ~tack the presentation trays o~ the p~k~ing boxeq in the prior art, snap-~a~tened ~tacking sy~t~ are o~ten pro~ided, which are intended to hold one t~ay on another.
S~ch a snap-~as~ened stacki~g ~ystem c~mprlses clip~ in the upper tray wh~ch snap into the lower tray.
This snap-fastening ~ystem is o~ten di~icult to ~se, becau~e shop ~hel~es do not generally pro~ide enough height ~o~ the empty upper tray to ~e remo~ed with ea~e, once the two stacked presentatlon ~rays are po~itioned on =

a ~helf, without removing both o~ them ~ro~ the shel~.
This i8 because unclipping the upper tray requires a degree of height allowance which is not provided in ~ conventional shel~ing Another known stacking syste~ compri~e~ a ~ixture which i5 placed on the top of the lower presentation tray in order to form a ~upport allowing the upper tray to be put i~ place Such a ~ixture i~ generally ~ormed in the clo~ure lid of the packaging box by cutting out a precut part so as to gi~e acces~ to mo~t o~ the ~olume o~ the lower tray.
Thi~ fixture ~y~tem is ~ot often used, because it require~ considerable installation time ~or cutting out the unused part o~ the lid to form the ~ixture.
In order to overcome the a~orementioned drawbac~s in the prior art, the present inve~tion provides a novel box ~or packaging and presentation made o~ board, com-prising two separable elements a~hled by being fitted to one another, one o~ the said elements ~orming a presentation t~ay and the other forming a closure lid, each element being produced by cutting and ~olding a board bla~k 80 a~ to ~orm a ba~e bordered by four walls, pairs o~ which ~orm a right angle and which ~tand perpen-dicular to the ~aid base.
2~ It is characterized in that the clo~ure lid has a ~ront wall and a back wall with di~ferent heights h , h,, the height h of the ~ront wall beiny suf~icient to cover the majority of the ~o~t ~ace of the box, while the height h, of the back wall is less than the height h1 of the ~ront wall, ~o that a~ter the clo~ure lid ha~ been ~itted onto the pre~entation tray, the ~aid back wal}
only partially covers the back wall o~ the said pre~enta-tion tray, over a height which is su~ficient ~or locking o~ the front wall of the ~aid lid on the front ~ace of 3~ the box to pre~ent the box ~rom being opened by li~ting and/or pi~oting ~orward~ the bac~ wall o~ the clos~re lid.
This packaging and pre~entation box i8 thns optimized in terms o~ the board u~ed for manu~a~turing W O 97tl2812 PCT~B96/01036 it.
It allow~, by locking the front wall o~ the lid on the front face o~ the box, ~or example using a si~gle adhe~i~e tape or a drop o~ a & esive, automatic locking of the back o~ the said closed box by interlockiny o~ two right-angled corners, with the back wall of the lid cove~ing the back wall o~ the p-esentation tray.
T~;5 closed ~d locked box can then be ope~ed simply and quickly by unlocking the front wall o~ the lid and r~; ~;n5 the said lid. Thi~ i8 becauRe unloc3cing the ~ront face o~ the lid al~o leads to a~tomatic unlocking o~ the back o~ the clo~ed ~ox.
Production of 8 ch a box is simpli~ied, and the production of the box may, in particular, be a~tomated.
According to a particularly advanta~eous characteristic of the pac~aging box according to the inve~tion, the height h~ o~ the back wall of the closure lid has a mirl;m~ ~im~n~ios~ allowing the said lid to be ~sed, when re~ersed and inverted, to form a holding cradle capable of rsceiving the presentation tray with the latter being inclined, the back wall o~ the said lid ~upporting the front part o~ the ~aid presentation tray 80 a~ to incline it slightly backwards in order to pre~ent the objects arranged i~side the said pre~entation tray ~rom being ~ilted forwards.
When the heiyht of the back wall o~ the box i~
greater than the m;n;m~m ~; Qion, provi~ion may then b~
made that, over it~ entire width, the said back wall has a ~olding or per~orated or scored cutting line allowing the said back wall to be folded or cut to give it the ~;n;~nm height h~ ~or the said lid to be used i~ it~
po3ition as a holding cradle for the presentation tray.
The~e characteristics are entirely abse~t in the packaging box forming a display unit in doc ~ent 35 EP-637 548, ~ecau~e thi~ }~ox i8 a packaying box of the American box type, which i~ opened by opening the ~pper wings of the said box. O~ce opened, the said box th~s no longer has a rigid base beoause the wings are detached from each other It i~ then impo~sible to turn over t~e -W O 97/12812 PCT~B96/01036 open lid in order to place the pres~ntatlon tray inside.
Furthermore, the lid pro~ided in the box in document EP-637 548 has a back edge which 1~ too high to allow such use.
According to another particularly advanta~eous characteristic of the presentation packaging box accord-ing to the invention, in its base, the prese~tation tray has two precut stacking tongue~ which extend towards each other, each startin~ ~rom one longit~ l edge of the said ba~e, transversely to the said edge, the stac~ing tongues ext~n~i n~, when deployed, perpendicularly to ~he ~aid base in extension o-r a respective ~ide wall o~ the said tray and being capable o~ bearing against the side WallB of the lower pre~entatio~ tray to keep them below the base o~ the ~pper pre~entatio~ tray The ~ollowing description, made with reference to the appended drawings which are given by way of non-limitiny examples r will clearly show the 8ubj ect-matter of the ln~ention and how it may be embodied.
In the appended drawings:
- Figure 1 iB a ~chematic perspective side view of a closed packaging and pre~entation box according to the present invention, - Figure 2 iB a schematic perspective side ~iew o~ the box in Figure 1 when open, with the presentation tray being inserted, inclined, into the reversed and inverted clos re lid, - Figures 3a and 3b are schematic perspecti~e ~ide views o~ the presentation tray according to the invention when filled with one or two row~ of products, - Figure 4 is a schematic ~ide view of two pre~entation trays according to the invention when stacked Figure~ 1 and 2 represent a packaging and presen-tation box 100 made Q~ board, ha~ing two separable elements which are ass~hled by being fitted together.
For great~r clarity, the box i8 represented empty in Fig~re 1 One o~ the said separable el~ments form~ a pre~entation tray 110 and the other forms a clos~re lid 120.

W O 97/12812 PCT~B96/01036 Each ~eparable element 110, 120 is produced by cutting, ~olding and adhe~i~ely bo~i~ a corrugated board blank Any ~a~teni~g mea~ other than adhesive b~;~g ~ay, o~ cour~e, be pro~ided.
The presentation tray 110 intended to contain products ~o be packaged, for example prod~cts in the form o~ a flexible pouch such as ~ 1 food packets (see Figures 3a and 3b), has a base 111 bordered by four walls 112, 113, 114, 11~, pairs o~ which ~orm a riyht angle and which rise perpendicularly to the said base 111 As shown by Figures 1 and 2, the ~ack wall 115 o~ the pre~e~ta~ion tray 110 has a height _ substantially egual to the height o~ the box. The said back wall 11~ is formed by two wing~
115a, ll~b, respectively ~ixed to the ~ide walls 112, 113, ~olded with two vertical edges adjacent and extern~lly covered ~y a flap ll~c. In an alternative e~bodiment (not shown), pro-~ision may, o~ course, be made that instead of the wings }l~a, 115b, the outer flap 115c of the bac~ wall llS is provided on each of its ~ree side edges with two fastenins tabs which ca~ be adhesively bonded respectively onto the inner face o~ the side walls of the said pre~entation tray.
The ~ront wall 114 o~ the pre~entation tray 110 has a relatively small height, 80 a~ to ~orm a simple lip with a crenellated upper edge to gi~e access to the ~ront opening of the presentation tray, with a view to dis-playing the said products on a ~hop shelf.
The ~ide walls 112, 113 of the pre~entation tray 110 ha~e upper edges 112a, 113a which extend obliquely ~rom the front wall 114 o~ the said presentation tray 110 the~ co~ti~e backward~ in a horizontal part, which allows the ~ront opening of the said tray to be u~co~ered in order to display the products The closure lid 120 has a base 121 which, a~ter the closure~-lid has been fitted onto the pre~entation tray (see Figure 1), form~ the upper wall o~ the box ~he base 121 o~ the closure lid 120 i5 bordered by ~our walls 122, 123, 124, 12~, pairs o~ which form a right a~gle and which rise perpendicularly to the said ba~e 121.

W O 97/12812 PCT~B96/01036 The front wall 124 and the back wall 125 of the closure lid 120 ha~e different height~ hl, ~. The height hl o~ the ~ront wall 124 i~ ~uf~icient to cove~ ~ st of t~e front ~ace o~ ~he box 100. This height 1 is here ~u~stantially equal to the height _ o~ the box. The ~eight h2 ~~ the back wall 125 i~ less ~han the height h o~ the ~ront wall 124, ~o that a~ter the closure lid 120 has been ~itted onto the pre~entation tray 110, the ~aid back wall 125 o~ the lid only partially co~ers the ~ack wall 115 o~ the presentation tray 110. The o~erlap o~ the ~ac~ wall 125 of the lid 120 on the back wall 115 o~ the presentation tray 110 is produced over a height which i~ su~ficient ~or locking of the front wall 124 of the said lid o~ the front face of the box to prevent the box ~ro~ ~eing opened by rai-~ing and/or tilting forward~
th~ back wall 125 of the clos~re lid 120.
The front wall 124 of the closure lid 120 can be locked on the fro~t face o~ the box simply by applying a single a & e~ive tape or any other ~astening means which secure~ the ~ront wall 124 o~ the lid 120 to the ~ront edge 114 of the presentation tray 110 It is also pO9-~ible to pro~ide a strip o~ adhesive or a drop of adhe-sive on the inner part of the front wall 124 of the lid so as to secure the caid ~ront wall 124 to the fro~t edge 114 o~ the presentation tray 110.
According to one advantayeous characteri~tic o~
the box 100, the back flap 115c of the ~aid bac~ wall 115 o~ the presentation tray has a height equal to the differe~ce between h1 and h2, so that the upper horizontal edge of the said flap 115c, which externally forms the back wall 115, co~stitute~ an abutment ~or the ~ack wall 125 of the closure lid 120.
The ~ide wall~ 122, 123 o~ the clo~ure lid 120 have a height which increases ~ro~ the back wall 125, o~ height h-, of the said lid to the front wall 124, of height hl, of the said lid. The respective edges 122a, 123a of the side walls 122, 123 of the said lid are therefore inclined, here with a di~continuity close to the ~ront wall 124 o~ the lid.

W O 97/12812 PCT~B96/01036 ,, Such an arrangement o~ the lid make~ it possible to opt~mize the use o~ the board blan~ ~or producing it It should be noted that there is an allowance in the ~itting o~ the back wall 12~ o~ the clos~re lid 120 onto the back wall 115 o~ the presentation tray 110, which is o~ the order of the tolerance of the corrugation of the said board.
In the embodiment represented i~ the figures, use is ~ade o~ a 3 mm corr~gated board, which gi~es a ~itting allowancQ o~ plus or mi~s 3 = .
~ 5 can be see~ more partic~larly i~ Fig~re 2, the height ~ of the back wall 125 of the closure lid 120 has a ~;niml~m ~im~cion allowing the said closure lid 120 to be used, when reversed and in~erted, to ~orm a holding cradle capa'ble of recei~i~g the presentation tray 110 with the latte~ being incli~ed T~ this context, the term "reversed" means that the lid sho~ld be positioned so that the ~ack wall 125 i8 located at the front and the ~ront wall 124 iq located at the back.
In this position, the back wall 125 o~ the said lid 120 supports the front part o~ the presentation tray llO 80 a8 to ;nt~l ;ne it slightly backwards in order to pre~ent the objects arranged inside the ~aid presentation tray 110 ~rom being capable of tilting forwards.
This is partic~larly advantageous when the prod~cts arranged in~ide the presentation tray are ~lexible products such as ~1exible bags which ha~e a natural tendency to tilt ~orwards when the tray is in the horizontal position.
The height h2 ~~ the back wall 125 o~ the closure lid has a ~; m~n ~ion pre~erably lying approximately between 30 and 35 millimetres.
o~ cour~e, when technical rea~o~s dictate that 3~ the height h2 o~ the back wall o~ the closure lid iB
greater than the ~; n i m--~ ~alue, here 35 millimetres, the said back wall has, over its entire width, a per~orated or ~cored li~e allowing the said back wall to be folded or cut so as to use the said clo~ure lid in its positio~

W O 97/12812 PCT~B96/01036 as a holding cradle.
Another tray (see Figure 4) can be placed on the pres~ntation tray 110 positioned inclined inside the reversed and i~verted closure lid 120 (see Figure 2), on condition that the total height of the two s~k~ trays ~ i8 kept su~ficiently s~all to allow both to be fitted at the same time in a convent;on~l shop ~helf. Once the two trays thus ~uperposed are positioned in the chel~ the upper presentation tray can still be removed with ea~e without ha~ing to withdraw both ~rom the said sh~lf.
Thi~ i8 particularly advantageous because it allows t~me to be ~a~ed wh~n ~itting the va~ious presen-tation tray arrangeme~ts in the shop shelf.
~5 regard~ the st~c~; ng o~ the presentation tray llO Of the box according to the invention, a~ can be seen i~ Figure 2, this tray ha8 in its base 111 two precut stacking tongue~ 116, 117 which extend towards each other, each starting ~r ~ one longit~ l edge llla, lllb of the said base 111, transversely to the said edge llla, lllb. The st~k;n~ tongues 116, 117 ext~n~i~ when deployed tsee Figure 4), perpendicularly to the said base 111 in extension of respective side wall~ 112, 113 of the said tray 110 and being capable of bearing against the side walls 112, 113 of the lower presentation tray 110 to ~eep them inwards below the base (110) of the upper presentation tray (see Figure 4) The stacking tongues 116, 117 are advantageou~ly located in ~ront of the centre of ma-~s of the presenta-tion tray, in order to prevent forward tilting of the upper tray stac~ed on the lower tray.
As can be ~een in ~igure 2, a hole 116a, 117a is provided at each free end of each stacking tongue 116, 117, allowing the inqertio~ o~ a finger for opening each stacking tongue 116, 117 Of course, the person skilled in the art will be able to provide a~y fasteni~g means, s~ch as a groove or a tight perforation, for en~ ring that the cut-out tongues are adequately secured to the ~ide wall~ of the tray when they are deployed.

W 097/12812 PCT~B96/01036 A8 can be see~ more partic~larly ln ~ gures 3a and 3b, the presentatio~ tray has a width which allows presentation o~ product~ in one or two rowQ.
In the case when two rows o~ the same product are presented, as more particularly represented in Fig~re 3b, a ~oard wall 118 is pro~ided which can be positioned ae the centre of the ~aid tray 110 over it~ entire length, in order to separate th~ two row~ o~-~products.
This board wQll 118 has a ~ront edge which is incli~ed, like the ~ront edges o~ the side walls o~ the said presentation tray.
The present in~e~tion is in no way limited to the em~odiment given and repre~ented, and the person skilled in the art may ma~e any alteration~ to it which are in accordance with its spirit.
