Abstract

The bag with bellows is made by longitudinal folding of a paper web (1) which has been previously coated with coating bands (12) or thermoweldable material positionned with respect to a marking (14) used to position correctly the place where the welds (3) and the cutting (4) for separating the bags (5) have to be done.

Description

. . CA 02228602 l998-02-04 Method of manufacturing bags having a gusseted bottom The invention is a simplified variant of the patent FR-A-2,689,105 and makes it possible to reduce paper consumption.
The patent FR-A-2,689,105 relates to a bag, the walls of which are formed from a piece of paper folded in a direction perpendicular to its base which is equipped with a gusset which makes it possible to make it stand and to create a first volume for filling with a quantity of product and in particular French fries;
subsequently, it is possible to open out the folds which are fixed only on the upper edges of the bag to increase the volume of the bag and improve its stability.
This product, for packaging French fries, is competing against board bags, such as those described in the patents US-A-2 821 337, US-A-2 146 308 and WO
94/02370, manufactured from a web of board, or indeed paper, on a reel, from which a flattened sheath is made, the edges of the web being glued to one another, outer face to inner face; the sheath is then cut transversely to the unrolling direction of the paper into regular lengths, one end of which is turned down on itself and glued to form a gusseted bottom of the bag.
The object of the invention is to manufacture continuously bags made of non-folded board or paper with a gusseted bottom by applying to the paper web at regular intervals, on the inner face, at least one thin heat-sealing coating strip arranged transversely and positioned relative to a reference mark located on the outer face.
According to another characteristic of the invention, a strip of heat-sealing material is deposited along the longitudinal edges of the paper web, which makes it possible to form a hem on one of the offset edges of the opening of th~

Another characteristic of the invention resides in the fact that the paper web coated with heat-sealing material passes, before folding, welding and AMENDED SHEET

separation of the bags, into a drying and/or coollng device.
The method of manufacture according to Claim 1, the preamble of which is based on the state o~ the art according to US-A-2 821 337, makes it possible to manufacture continuously bags equipped with a gusset, which have the abovementioned characteristics.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 shows a diagrammatic perspective view of the method of manufacturing gusseted bags according to a preferred version of the invention, and Figure 2 shows a gusseted bag manufactured according to the method of the invention.
All that is necessary is to depart from the technique for manufacturing the bag according to the patent FR-A-2,689,105, to omit the stage of formation of the folds and directly to fold the paper web 1 (Fig. 1) longitudinally to form a "W" 2. All that is required then is to fix the paper to itself at regular intervals along at least one fixing strip 3 located perpendicularly to the unrolling direction of the paper web 1 and to make a cut 4 parallel to the fixing strip 3, either in the fixing strip 3 itself if it is broad or between two fixing strips positioned side by side, to form a bag 5 (Fig. 2), the vertical edges 6 of the lateral faces 7 and 8 of which are fixed to one another, inner face against inner face, and which comprises a gusset 9 at its base.
In a preferred version of the invention, fixing is in the form of a weld made from a thin layer of heat-sealing material 10 (Fig. 1) deposited on the paper web 1, at the place where it is desired to make the weld, by a coating device 22. The paper web 1 is unrolled and at least one thin coating strip 12 of a heat-sealing material 10 is applied at regular intervals, on the inner face 11 which will be inside the finished bag 5, perpendicularly to the unrolling direction 4 of the paper, and the paper web 1 coated AMENDED SHEET

c ' CA 02228602 1998-02-04 with heat-sealing material is made to pass into a device 13 which makes possible either drying or cooling, depending on the type of heat-sealing material used, so that it does not adhere to the parts of the machine with which it will be in contact at the time of manufacture of the bag 5; this coating strip 12 is associated with a reference mark 14 located preferably on the outer face 15 of the paper web 1 which is the side intended for printing and will be outside the bag 5. This reference mark 14 may be deposited at the time of printing of the paper web 1, which also makes it possible to carry out centred printing where the coating strips 12 are deposited in a position which is located relative to this reference mark 14, and this reference mark also serves for positioning the exact place for making the weld 3 and for making the cut 4. For each operation, there is a device 16 for regular checking of the position of the reference mark 14 relative to the position of the coating strip 12 in order to verify whether it is in the desired zone so as to trigger, for example without this example being limiting, a correction of the positioning of the coating strip 12 as soon as drift is observed.
In a variant of the preferred version of the invention, a strip of heat-sealing material 10 is also deposited on the edges 17 of the paper web 1 and drying or cooli~g is carried out as previously in order then to fold over the edges 17 to form on each side a longitudinal hem 18, which makes it possible to rigidify them and possibly make them more user-friendly.
In another variant of the preferred version of the invention, the heat-sealing material is deposited during an operation which is separate from that of manufacture of the bag, associating with it a pre-printed reference, and the paper web is rolled up again;this operation can be carried out only if the layer of product deposited is sufficiently thin as to allow the web to be rolled up again without the reel being AMENDED SHEET

deformed. The productlon of the longitudinal hem 18 described previously can also be carried out using cold glue which can be deposited during the folding over 19 of the longitudinal hem 18; in practice, this leads to the use on a single machine of two separate gluing devices; the fixing of the edges 6 (Fig. 2) of the bag using cold glues allows glue to be deposited only after longitudinal folding in the shaping device which makes it possible to carry out the folding into the "W" 2 shape (Fig. 1), which is technically difficult to achieve.
Another method consists of using a paper web 1 entirely coated with heat-sealing material on the inner face 11; it is then possible to omit the station for depositing the coating strip 12 or not to use it, and quite simply to synchronize the welding station 20 with the cutting station 21; this coating operation is carried out before the paper is printed.
For the description, a paper web was chosen as the base material; clearly, this material may be replaced by any simple or complex flexible film which is resistant to the welding temperatures of the associated heat-sealing material 10.
