Description

April 18, 1944. H. K STEEN 2,346,710
METHOD 0F MAKING HANDLED BAGS Filed June 10, 1940 B5 v INVENTOR BY v AT1-ORNE Patented Apr. 18, 1944 METHOD F MAKING HNDLED BAGS Harford K. Steen,'lNewburh, N. Y., assignor to Interstate Bag Co., Walden, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application June l0, 1940, Serial No. 339,619
(Cl. SEI- 35) 2 Claims.
My present invention relates to an improved method of making handled shopping bags, particularly of the type in which the handles are adhesively secured to the paper web from which the bag is formed. In my previous Patent No. 2,060,451, issued November 10, 1936, I have described and claimed a method of making bags of this type in which the handles are secured to the bag by patches which are individual to the handles. I have now found that superior results are to be had by first forming a composite of a strip and both handles, such strip being then placed in position upon the web so that in the completed bag the strip will extend around the periphery thereof and thus not only serve to hold the handles in place, but to materially strengthen the bag.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the following detailed description taken with the annexed drawing in which Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic plan view showing the web material with various of the bag making operations performed upon it up to the point where the web has been tubed and is ready for severing into bag lengths;
Fig. 42 shows a severed web;
Fig. 3 shows the severed portion of Fig. 2 after it has been bottomed, completing the bag making portion of the tubed operations;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of a portion of the completed bag with the top half thereof removed, as by a plane of severance parallel to one of the faces of the bag; and
Fig. 5`shows a composite of strip and handles ready for application to the bag web.
In carrying out my improved method, reference being had for the moment to Fig. 1, web material I0 usually of kraft paper or the like from a roll, not shown, rst has applied thereto a continuous stripe of adhesive I2, such stripe serving subsequently to bind the marginal edges. of the webv which constitute the seam of the bag. In a second operation transverse aligned slits I3 are made in the web, such slits being along the future line oi' severance of the web into bag lengths, the purpose of such slits being evident hereinafter.
In a further operation an area I4 of adhesive preferably of the conflguration shown in dotted lines, Fig. 4, may be deposited transversely of the web below and adjacent the slits I3 for reception of the handle composite subsequently to be applied. In the next operation a previously formed handle composite consisting of a transverse band 2| of suitable material as kraft paper, 55
and handles 22 and 23 is deposited upon the adhesive band I4. Previous to their application to the bag, handles 22, 23 aresecured to the band or strip 2| by gummed areas 22h (Fig. 5) engaging the Shanks 22a of the handles.
The web I0 bearing thereon the composite of the strip and handles mentioned is now formed into a tube as by former 23a, as indicated in Fig.
1, the mechanism being arranged so that the handles 22 and 23 are superimposed, the opposite edges of the bag material being secured together by means of the adhesive stripe I2. Preferably one of the handles, 22, is suciently smaller than the other handle 23 so as to fit inside the larger handle when the bag is completed, thereby avoiding more than one handle thickness when thev completed bags are stacked. By means of mechanism not shown the tubed web is successively severed along lines determined by slits I3, I3 (due to the existence of said slits, cutting of the handles is avoided), a severed portion of the tubed web being shown in Fig. 2a'. (One such slit, I3, is desirably made slightly bowed as shown in order to provide a tab I3a which is useful in the operation of bottoming the bag-an operation with Which the present invention is not concerned.)
Preferably the band 2| extends slightly short of the edges of the web III so that when the web is tubed only three or even two thicknesses are built up at the region of the seam and the transverse strip, 2 I.
My improved method which is herein claimed is independent of any speciilc mechanism for the carrying out of same, although for the sake of clearness certain apparatus has been diagrammatically indicated. Various apparatus, therefore, may be used, including that shown in my Patent 2,060,450 of November 10, 1936, up'on suitable modification.
It will therefore be seen that by carrying out the improved method the handles are secured to the bag by means of a single strip of bag material which extends around the periphery of the bag and reinforces same and which leaves the body portions of the handles extending from the imperforate edge of the bag. It will be understood, however, that the top of the bag may be formed in other ways. as by severing the tubed web above the handles, and folding over the bag material between the strip 2| and the top of the bag and adhesively securing same to the inside of the bag, suitable longitudinal slits in the folded over portion being provided to 'accommodate the handles.
Various departures may be made in my improved method. without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope off the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a. method of making handled shopping L gs from web material and handles having shank portions, in which the operations are performed of applying the adhesive to one edge of the web for seaming, tubing the web, severing same into bag lengths and bottoming said lengths, the improvement which consists in previously forming a band having attached thereto a pair of handles the members oi which are at spaced intervals with respect to one another, said handles being attached to the band by their shank portions, the arrangement being such that when the web is tubed said handles will register substantially with one another in superposed position, which band is of a length approximately equal to the width of the web, applying said band to the web before the tubing operation and adhesively securing same transversely of said web, and then performing the operations aforesaid of tubing the web along a line intermediate said handles, severing the tubed web and bottoming the severed portion.
2. In a method of making handled shopping bags from web material and handles having shank portions, in which the operations are performed of applying the adhesive to one edge of the web for seaming, making aligned transverse slits in the web material adjacent the location of the handles, such slits forming a part of the line of severance of the web when the same is severed, tubing the web, severing same into bag lengths and bottoming said lengths, theimprovement which consists in previously forming a band having attached thereto a pair of handles the members of which are at spaced intervals with respect to one another, said handles being attached to the band by their shank portionsI the arrangement being such that when the web is tubed said handles will register substantially with one another in superposed position, which band is of a length approximately equal to the width of the web, applying said band to the web before the tubing operation and adhesively securing same transversely of said web and adjacent and below said slits, and then performing the operations aforesaid of tubing the web along a line intermediate said handles, severing the tubed web along a line of severance which includes said slits, and bottoming the severed portion.
