Abstract

A winder for continuously winding a web into roles on successive cores includes a water jet cutting device to effect turn-up of the web onto an empty core. The water jet cutting device has at least one nozzle positioned on the same side as the web as the empty core and upstream of the nip where the empty core meets the driving drum. The water jet nozzle directs a water jet toward the web as the web enters the nip to cut a leading tip which turns up onto the empty core. By directing the water jet against the web on the same side as the empty core the water backsplash at the nip wets the empty core causing the cut tip to turn up onto the empty core. The winder further includes at least one auxiliary nozzle located upstream of the nip on the same side of the web as the empty core for directing a low atomized adhesive fluid stream against the empty core thereby gluing a predetermined strip of the empty core that passes over the leading tip severed from the web causing the leading tip to adhere to the empty core and effect turn-up. Provision is made for the use of two water jet nozzles moving independently of each other to provide a cross cut across the web. When two water jet nozzles are used in this manner, the one auxiliary nozzle providing the low atomized fluid stream is positioned at the lateral center of the empty core to direct the glue onto a center portion of the empty core to assist in turn up.
