In a particular embo~i~"ent of the present invention, the first enclosed dining area is at least partially isolated from the special effect displayed in the second er,..lo~d dining area and the second enclosed dining area is at least partially isolated from the special effect displayed in the first enclosed dining area.
Other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the 25 following detailed description, taken in conjunction with the accompan~ing drawlng which illustrates, by way of example, various features of preferred embodiments of the invention.

Ds~c.;ut;Gn of the Fi~ures The detailed description of the invention will be made with reference to the accornpanying drawing, where like numerals designate corresponding parts of the figurls. It is to be unde~rstood that the Figure is illustrative of only one particular 5 embodiment of the present invention and other configurations of areas or the nature of types of areas are within the contemplation of the present invention.
FIG. 1 is a top plan schematic view illustrating one embodiment of a layout of a building structure of the present invention.
D-tailod Desnr~tion of tl~ sr~
10Turning now to the figure, FIG. 1 depicts a building structure 10. Building structure 10 in a prefe,..ed embodiment is an "attraction-based theme restaurant."
Building structure 10 houses a number of separate areas, some of which are prefe~rably at least partially isolated from each other by structural elements such as walls, ceilings and doors. These areas include separate dining areas 12-18, a patron 15control area 20, a bar area 30, a merchandise sales area 40, a central area 50, and a kitchen area 60.
As describe,d in more detail below, building structure 10 and the areas housed therein provide a patron with a complete enterlainment experience based on the following: P~ese.)talion of a choice of dining areas each having its own theme 20 selected from within a particular category of theme. For example, a particular televi~ on show selected from the category of popular television shows. The theme can be p~asanted by a combination of decor, furnishings, audio video displays, animatronic ,-,anne~uins, waiter and waitress costumes and the like. Patrons can also take advantage of a bar area which can also be designed based on the category of25 theme presented in the dining areas. Patrons can also purchase merchandise at a merc:handise sales area, preferably a retail shop, wherein the merchandise sold can be b;ased on both the theme pre, sented, such as particular television shows, and can include a logo of the attraction-based theme restaurant itself.

I~TICES~232119~ 1 ' The interior of building structure 10 can be designed to appear to be, for example, the inside of a sound stage. Preferably the interior of building structure 10 will appear to be a large, black television sound stage which contains a first enclosed dinirg space 12, an at least second enclosed dining space 13, and additional enclose dining spaces 14-18. ~eferably, enclosed dining spaces 12-18 are restaurants serving food and beverages to patrons thereof. Each enclosed dining space 12-18 is adapted to provide an ente,~ -""e.)t experience to the patrons therein. Each enclosed dining space can be designed to (epresen~ a Jitrerent theme. Preferably, in one embodiment of the present invention, each enclosed dining space will have the appearance of a set Irom a dirferent tel~.J;s ~n show, which provides a different theme to each dining area. The themes derir, ~g the look and feel of the dining area sets are licensed from the owner of the rights in the television show. As illustrative examples, possible sets may include The Munsters, Se~nfeld, I Love Lucy, Ses~me Street, etc. The dining area sets are preferably built to authentic specifications, based on the television show being presented. The dining area sets utilized in each dining area can be different or common to one or more other dining area. The number of dining areas configured to create a particular set can be varied based upon market demographics and the popularity of a particular set at particular times. Also, sets can be periodicallv changed in an existing dining area to stimulate excitement, new energy and new emotional appeal. The ability to change set attractions in different dining areas provides an opportunity to ganerate and maintain an interest in the facility that is not providod by typical thome restaurants.
In order to facilitate the rapid and convenient change of the types and/or number of sets provided, preferably the construction of the enclosed dining areas uses modular building materials and techniques as are known to those crf ordinar~ skill in the art of building design and construction. Accor. ~gly, enclosed dining areas can be separated by easily moved partitions.
In a most preferred embodiment, the partitions and other structural elements separating enclosed dining areas do not provide complete sensory isolation of one LATICESW21299 1 ' .

dining area from another. Rather, when, as described in more detail below, special effects are displayed in one dining area, patrons in a different dining area arepreferably able to perceive at least some sensations, for example, audible or tactile sensations, from these special effects. This partial isolation allows for a "teaser 5 effect" whereby patrons of one dining area will be encouraged to return to dine at another dining area to fully experience the effects presented in the other dining area.
In addition, to varying the theme between dining areas based on different television shows it is to be unde, alood that other themes are within the scope of the present invention. For example and not limited thereto, the theme can vary in dining 10 areas as follows: 1) recreation of a different space mission, for example, Gemini, Apollo, the Space Shuttle; 2) different periods in history, Ancient Rome, the Renaissance and the like; 3~ different nationalities and corresponding differentcuislnes; 4~ Ji~erent theatrically relaasad movies; The Lost World, Star Wars, and the like; 5), different musical styles and accompanying artists, rock, jazz, blues etc.
The theme in each dining area is created by the use of one or more devices which can include furniture and props, such as the furniture and props used to create the bridge on Star TrekD, or the interior of the genie's bottle in I Dream of Jeannie.
Addlitionally, au ' Dvi3ual displays can be included which display either clips from, for example, a particular television show or which display an effect related to, for20 example, a particular t~!e~is on show. Audio and video displays can be presented bv any technology which displays audio signals and/or video images, for example three-dimensional t~'wi~ an. ~reforably all audio and video displayed is encoded in a diglta forl~at and can be provided by a computer, a laser disc player and the like.
Additionally, but not limited to, the following devices can be used: animated 25 mannequins, smoke, fog and odor providing machines, holographic image creatlng devices, vibrating machines to vibrate surfaces such as floors, sub-harmonic sound generating machines, and virtual reality equipment for providing a virtual realit~l experience. The use of the special effects equipment can thereby generate a visual effect, an audio effect, a tactile effect, an olfactory effect, a taste effect, a motion LAllCESi2321299 1 effect and combinations thereof. The means for providing any of the above-listedeffects are not meant to be limited to existing technologies, but include any means whinh provide for the above-listed effects which can be developed.
The means for engaging in a virtual reality experience include equipment such 5 as a visored helmet which contàins a video display and or gloves and/or a full body suit which contain sensors that allow for the representation of actions made by a person wearing such equipment on the video display. The result of wearing this equipment is the sensation of engaging in an activity in a highly realistic way, such as, storming a castle, while in actuality the person is merely sitting in a room. This 10 terrn also encompasses all definitions as are in common usage. Further, the means for engaging in a virtual reality experience are not meant to be limited to existing technologies, but any means which provide for a virtual reality experience which can be developed. Such means for engaging in a virtual reality experience can be obt, ained from commercial suppliers as would be readily ascertainable. Alternatively 15 or additionally, custom means for engaging in a virtual reality experience can be created for use in the amusa."ent area. These custom means for engaging in a virtual reality experience can be combinations of commercially available components or can be entirely fabricated according to custom specifications.
Equipment for providing the effects specified above can be obtained from 20 cornmercial sl~pl.e s as would be readily ascertainable. Alternatively or additionally, the! equipment can be created for use in the dining areas. The custom effects equipment can be combinations of commercially available components or can be enlirely fabricated according to custom specifications.
In a preferred embodiment the special effects presentation is completely 25 aul~omated and is controlled by a computer. More preferably, the sp~cial effects pre!sentation for each dining area is controlled by a computer. The computer can be programmed as would be known by one of ordinary skill in the art to vary the special effects presentation. In addition to computer effects, human beings can be used tO
participate in the special effects presentation, as fo! example, characters in a LAl'ICES\2321299 1 television show. Alternatively or additionally, celebrities can be used to heighten the exci1:ement created in each dining area.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the theme presented in each dining area is based on a particular television show. In another embodiment the 5 theme prese"ted in each dining area is based on taping of an episode which is based on a particular television show. A theme based on a particular television show or based on the taping of a particular television show generally incorporates at least some characters and some prop or set decoration and the like associated with a particular t~'evis,on show. However, it need not be a depiction of a part of an actual 10 episode, nor incorporate every feature of the television show. In still another preferred embodiment of the present invention, the theme prosentod in each dining areal is the taping of a part of an episode of a particular television show.
By way of illustration, an example of a particular presentalion in a dining areaof al taping of a portion of a Star Trek0 episode is set forth from the time a patron 15 first enters the dining area. Upon entrance to the dining area, the patrons are seated at a table. Initially, none of the special effects which constitute the television show taping are active. In a preferred embodiment, these effects are presented every twenty minutes. Therefore, deper, 'ing upon the time since the last presentation. the patrons may have to wait up to twenty minutes for the next presentation. However20 if in a particular e."bQ 'i."ont of the present invention there are seven dining areas and each dining area set is activated every 20 minutes, then every two or three minutes a different set is activated. Because the various "productions" are staggered, patrons will not only enjoy their experience, but will be "teased" by the distant sound and othler effects of the other dining area sets. Unlike other theme restaurants whlch 25 offer a similar experience with each visit, the present invention provides multlple distinct experiences which are expected to keep patrons coming back for more.
The presentation preferably begins with audio of a director making comments typ, ically made in preparation for shooting a television scene, such as "ready on the setn. A response is given such as "we're ready," followed by "we're rolling, action l~llCES\2321299 1 ~ -Preferably, sound is provided from the front and back of the dining area in order to recreate the location of a director behind the camera and the actors in front of the camera. A video display which can be a recreation of the video display on the bridge of the Enter~.rise, is activated and shows the Enterprise moving through space. The Enterprise is then hit by a photon torpedo. The floor of the dining area begins vibrating. Animated mannequins of Star Trek~ characters are engaging in various task.s. Dialogue is heard between, for example, Captain Kirk and Scotty. The director is then heard to say, for example, "cut, that's a keeper, let's break for lunch." The video display and other effects are then shut down until the next presentation.
Typically, the entire "taping presentation" lasts about 60 to about 90 seconds.
However, shorter or longer presentations are within the scope of the invention.
Preferably, each pressntalion in a dining area is the same, however, in some embodiments of the invention the presentation could differ. In between presentations, video clips from the television show or similar entertaining displays can be shown. In some embodiments of the present invention interactive trivia garnes as are known may be utilized to entertain patrons between presentations.
To further the overall theme effect, waiters and waitresses can be attired in costumes particular to a specific theme, for example, a specific television show.
Alternatively, they can be attired similarly as, for example, production assistants.
Each dining area includes seating and tables for serving food. The tables and chairs can be specific to a particular dining area and can contribute to the theme in a particular dining area. Alternatively, standard tables and chairs which are the same in each dining area can be used. Additionally, utensils and plates can be similar or can vary based on the theme in a particular dining area. For example, if the theme is television shows, food can be presented on custom china designed to look like televisions .
Preferably, the tables are rectangular. Pref6~abl~ the tables are arranged so that patrons all sit on one side of the table and face in the same direction. Most preferably, if the dining area is arranged with a front and a back portion relative to LAl IC ES~12 1299 1 the display of special effects, the tables are arranged so that patrons are facing a side and the front and back is to their left and right or vice versa. Preferably, special effects displays are located throughout the dining area. In a particular embodiment of the present invention, special effects can be located throughout a 290 degreeS range of a dining area.
Preferably, the seating capacity in each dining area is the same, however, it can vary between dining area. In a particular embodiment of the present invention, 60 patrons can be seated in a dining area.
A kitchen area 50 provides food and beverages to the dining areas. The kitchen 10 area 50 can be centrally located with respect to the dining areas or can be located adjacent to less than all of the dining areas. The kitchen is designed to meet the demands of a c,o-"",ercial restaurant serving a large number of patrons, as would be known by those of ordinary skill in the art. Generally, each dining area will have the same or a similar menu. Of course, if a particular theme is cuisines of the world, 15 each dining area will have a separate and specific menu.
In one embodiment of the invention, presentations are activated every 20 mim~tes, this should stimulate the patrons at given table to leave after the second pres, entation, as most people will not wait another 20 minutes to experience a third presentation. To further f~ "latd a timely table turn, food production and the service 20 . sequence are designed for a 45-55 minute table turn, maximizing revenue opportunities.
The building structure 10 can also include a patron control area 20. Patron conl:rol area 20 serves as the reception, reservation and information area. The patron concrol area 20 is staffed by employees who function as reservationists and greeters 25 -- answering guests' questions, paging parties for seating and performing other guest-oriented functions.
Patron control area 20 can be designed to match the particular theme being pre:;ented in the dining areas. For example, if the themes presented are different television shows, patron control area 20 can be designed and designated as ~'Central Casting". Preferably, it would be designed to appear to be the production center of a working studio. It could include the following: a production board which lists all of tho shows "in production" in each of the dining areas at the time. Tidbits like "Hot Set," "In Production Now," Special Effects Shooting Today," etc. can appear on the 5 production board next to individual show (set~ names.
If the theme offered in the dining areas is different space missions, patron control area 20 can be designed and designated as "NASA's Mission Control" and correspondingly designed with NASA and space related information.
Upon approaching patron control area 20, a party will leave their name for a 10 reservation, be informed regarding the length of their wait and told, for example, that they will be paged when their "set~ is "live." Preferably, each party will be encouraged to visit the merchandise sales area 40 and bar area 30. When a party reccives notice that they are ready to be seated in a dining area, e.g., receives their "cas'ting call," they will return to patron control area 20 to be seated.
Depending upon the theme offered in the dining areas, the employees can be costumed accordingly. For example, if the themes are different television shows, the employees can be dressed as television studio Pages. Preferably, patrons are led to the specific dining area or bar area 30 by an employee. While escorting the party to their seats, the e",p'oye~, for example a Page, can reinforce the theme experience by 20 for example, informing the party that they will be dining on a "hot set" and will see a taping of the particular television show displayed in the particular dining area they are being escorted to. Preferably, the staff escorting the patrons to their particular dining area will escort the patrons past at least one and preferably two other dinlng areas so that patrons gain a quick view of them and are thereby encouraged to return 25 and experience those dining areas on another occasion.
Prererably, patron control area 20 also serves to restrict access to dining areas 13-18, and to bar area 30. nest, icted access is provided by the employees stationed at patron control area 20. Preferably, in order to insure that all persons in or with access to the dining areas 13-18 and bar area 30 have been admitted through patron LATICES\2321299 1 ~ -control area 20, all properly admitted patrons are given a control badge to wear The contlol badge can contain a designation such as Visitor or Extra. The control badge can be a sticker which is applied to the clothing or a stamp applied to the skin or a plaque which is worn. The control badge can designate a particular dining area the 5 patron is to attend. The designation of the particular dining area can be accomplished by depicting a logo, or other visual representation of the theme being depicted in a particular dining area. The control badge, can be collected from patrons when they leave the facility or can be kept as a souvenir.
The building structure 10 can also include a bar area 30. The bar area 30 can 10 be educational and can provide an historical and authentic ex~erience based on the particular theme being presented in the dining areas.
For example, if the theme presented is dif~crent television shows, the bar area can include a video wall with a number of video displays such as video screens including t~'e~ sn sets, television monitors and the like, each represanting one year 15 in te!levision history. In a prefened e--,bodi.--ent there are provided a number of video scre'ens equal to the present year minus 1950. For example, short clips or prornotional trailers from television broadcasts, which an include commercials, news, and entertainment shows, of each year from 1950 to the present can be featured, providing guests with the ability to experience the entire history of television -- black 20 and white to color, the vaudeville area to the western era, right through to today's popular shows. Preferably, the multiple video displays are controlled by a central computer having a connection to each display.
Alternatively, different areas of bar area 30 can contain a number of video displays which present an image selected from a particular theme. For example, 25 television shows from a particular era, such as, the "Golden Age" of tet~vision or the 50's, 60's or 70's, or "cop shows", or black and white television shows. The decor in this area of bar area 30 can be chosen to match the particular era depicted. For example, 1 950's style television sets showing television shows from the 1 950's and all or most of the decor in black and white. Preferably, the multiple video displays LATICESU321~99 1 are controlled by a central computer having a connection to each display.
Alternatively, each group of video displays can be controlled independently.
The balance of the bar area can further the theme by providing customized bar stoc,ls, for example: director's chairs tabletops featuring graphics of the Top 100 5 television shows of all times and souvenir glassware.
Guests are preferably escorted into bar area 30 by staff primarily to wait for dining room seating. Accordingly, bar area 30 functions primarily as a holding area for dining guests. Of course, patrons wishing to visit bar area 30 only can be escorted in by staff based upon the availability of seating.
The building structure 10 can also include a merchandise sales area 40. In a par1:icular embodiment of the present invention, merchandise sales area 40 is approximately about 2,000 square feet to about 3,500 square feet and includes anintleractive area. In a preferred embodiment, merchandise sales area 40 is about2,500 square feet. The merchandise sold can be based upon the particular theme 15 being presented in the dining areas. For example, the merchandise can be based upcn highly popular television shows. The retail merchandise can include logo'd items from the te'eJi~ ~n shows displayed in the dining area and a vast array of other licensed television products. The sale of merchandise other than merchandise merely related to the attractlon itself, for example, as at other theme restaurants, is a 20 powerful benefit of the present invention which combines the sale of merchandise with the presentation in dining areas of themes related to that merchandise.
In a particular e..-bodi"-o,-l of the present invention, merchandise sales area 40 will include merchandise which appeals to different demographic age groups. In one embodiment, the merchandise which appeals to different age groups will be 25 inters~,ersed throughout merchandise sales area 40.
