Abstract
This invention relates to the automatic opening and closing of typical forced hot air registers deflector and cover.
The usual and common practice of deflecting hot air as it leaves the register is to place a separate deflector on the register.
These deflectors are meant to direct the hot air to the center of the room where it is most desired.
The current available deflectors do not act as a cover and are inconvenient as they protrude above the floor and are therefore in a position to be easily displaced and broken.
It is the purpose of this invention to prevent this occurrence by automatically closing the deflector almost flat with the floor and at the same time acting as a cover for the register preventing such things as dust, dirt, spilled liquids, dropped objects, insects, etc. from entering the hot air system.
The heat from the hot air system causes the bimetallic spring to move, (either expand or contract), causing the actuating rod to push up the register deflector/cover.
The bimetallic spring holds the deflector/cover in the fully opened position until the heat shuts down thereby causing the spring to rotate in the opposite direction and lowering the deflector/cover to the fully closed position.

Description
SpeCIflCRt1U11 This invention employs a typical hot air register ( 1 ) (metal or plastic), that is normally placed into a floor to provide a means of controlling hot air driven from a hot air furnace.
This invention consists of a combination register deflector and cover{2).
The cover is slightly larger than the outside dimensions of any particular hot air register.
The cover is made of high-density polystyrene plastic and has on its underside a female socket (3) with which to attach an "L" shaped actuating rod (4) that raises and lowers the deflectorlcover.
The cover is attached to the register by means of a slip on "V" connection (5) that runs the length of the cover.
T'he cover opens and closes by means of a hinge arrangement (6).
The actuating device to open and close this cover is by means of a typical heat activated, bimetallic, spiral spring (7) similar to those springs employed to open and close automatic chokes in automobiles and those employed in a typical manually operated household thermostat which turns on and off the furnace.
This bimetallic spring is attached to its plastic base (8) by means of a stud (9).
The base has a friction fit clamp {10) which attaches to the open/close damper {11) on the bottom of the register.
'The actuating rod is "L" shaped and the short end ( 12) of the "L" is attached to the spring by inserting it into the closed circle end of the spring(13).
The long end of the "L" shaped actuating rod has a round male end ( 14) that protrudes through the center grate of the register (15) and is fitted into the corresponding female socket (3) that is located on the underside of the deflectorlcover, in the center of the covers length and near its hinged portion.
