Description

a CA 02217605 1997-10-06 i Tobacco Product for Do-it-Yourself Production of a Cigarette, Particularly a Filter Cigarette Description The invention relates to a tobacco product for do-it-yourself production of a cigarette, particularly a filter cigarette, comprising a tobacco portion adapted to the tobacco filling of a finished cigarette on the one hand and adapted in terms of cross-section and length to the tobacco receiving space of a cigarette paper tube on the other hand, and held together by a pull-off sleeve.
Such a tobacco product is for example known from DE-C 34 07 461 or EP-B-155 514. A quite similar proposal was also made in EP-A-123 150.
The known tobacco product became widespread immediately after its introduction to the market and is successfully sold in the Federal Republic of Germany under the trademark WESTPOINT. This tobacco product has met with a similarly large degree of approval abroad. The known tobacco product of the type named is characterised in that the wrapping or pull-off sleeve of the tobacco portion consists of smokable material. Furthermore, the pull-off sleeve is air-permeable in such a way that the tobacco product outwith the closely-abutting cigarette paper tube is not smokable.
There is further known from DE-U 83 09 186 and US-A 3822710 a tobacco product for do-it-yourself 5 production of cigarettes by the user, which is charac-terised by a prefabricated article, not smokable as such, in the form of a tobacco cartridge prefabricated in the factory, comprising an air-permeable wrapping of non-smokable material, open at the end, and adapted in 10 diameter to the cigarette paper tube or a finished cigarette, and with a skein-like tobacco supply respec-tively corresponding to a cigarette portion which may be transferred by an associated piston adapted to the internal diameter of the wrapping out of the wrapping 15 into a prefabricated cigarette paper tube. This tobacco product is suitable both for use in conjunction with previously known self-fill cigarette paper tubes and also in conjunction with previously known self-rolling cigarette paper leaves. This system has also 20 become widespread in practice under the trademark COOPER.
The present invention is directed towards the provision of a further alternative for pre-portioned tobacco for self-production of cigarettes by the user, 25 which is likewise simple to handle and is also rela-tively simple to manufacture using modified cigarette-producing machines, and which in particular can take advantage of the tax advantage for fine-cut in countries where fine-cut is subject to less tax than a 30 factory-manufactured cigarette.
In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a tobacco product for do-it-yourself production of a cigarette, particularly a filter cigarette, comprising a tobacco portion providing the tobacco filling of a finished cigarette on the one hand and, with regard to cross-section and length, corresponding to the tobacco receiving space of a cigarette paper tube on the other hand, and held together by a pull-off sleeve.
The tobacco product according to the invention is characterised in that the pull-off sleeve is either (a) wound loosely about the tobacco portion or (b) is only slightly glued, particularly at points along both its 10 longitudinal edges overlapping one another, and in that a grip tab for removing the pull-off sleeve connects particularly to the outer longitudinal edge of said pull-off sleeve.
In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a tobacco product for do-it-yourself production of a cigarette, particularly a filter cigarette, comprising a tobacco portion provid-ing the tobacco filling of a finished cigarette on the one hand and, with regard to cross-section and length, 20 corresponding to the tobacco receiving space of a cigarette paper tube on the other hand, and held together by a pull-off sleeve, and a grip tab glued at any point on the pull-off sleeve in such a way that, upon pulling the grip tab, the pull-off sleeve breaks open close to the grip tab, so that thereby it can be removed before the tobacco is wrapped with cigarette paper. This alternative is above all extremely simple in manufacturing terms, as no consideration needs to be given to the point at which the grip tab is applied to the pull-off sleeve.
In this embodiment however the pull-off sleeve is preferably extremely thin and correspondingly easy to break open. Further, care must naturally be taken that the connection between the grip tab and the pull-off sleeve is extremely secure, so that in every case when tension is exerted on the grip tab the pull-off sleeve breaks open and the grip tab is not released from the pull-off sleeve.
5 Particular emphasis can be made to providing the grip tab, as a separate element, connected, particular-ly glued, to the pull-off sleeve, preferably with the grip tab connected to the pull-off sleeve and extending over a portion, almost all or more than all of the 10 circumference of the pull-off sleeve. The pull-off sleeve may be loosely wound about the tobacco portion with the grip tab extending over the overlapping area of the two longitudinal edges of the pull-off sleeve and glued on both sides of the overlapping area to the 15 pull-off sleeve, holding the tobacco together. In this embodiment, no adhesion of the pull-off sleeve is required. The tobacco portion is held together purely by adhesion of the grip tab to the pull-off sleeve, slight adhesion, particularly pressure-sensitive 20 adhesion being sufficient in accordance with that in the adhesive papers which are generally known. Alter-natively, the grip tab may comprise a relatively rigid material, particularly cardboard, plastic or the like.
The second embodiment, with a grip tab of rela-25 tively rigid material, has the advantage that this latter may be securely gripped. Moreover, there is no risk that the grip tab will involuntarily tear off.
This advantage becomes effective particularly when the tobacco portion according to the invention is intro-30 duced into the press chamber of a previously known cigarette-filling machine with the aim of removing the pull-off sleeve and transferring the tobacco into a pre-fabricated cigarette paper tube. In this case, before removal of the pull-off ' - CA 02217605 1997-10-06-a 5 sleeve, the movable press bar is moved by means of a grip tab against the tobacco product, until it abuts thereon exerting a light pressure. Thereafter the grip tab, projecting out of the press chamber, is pulled. The pull-off sleeve is thus broken open and, holding the tobacco back in the press chamber, is pulled therefrom.
Then the tobacco is transferred out of the press chamber into a prefabricated cigarette paper tube by means of a transfer piston associated with the press chamber in a previously known way. The tobacco product according to the invention is thus particularly suitablein conjunction with previously known cigarette-filling machines, whose press chamber permits withdrawal of the pull-off chamber by means of the grip tab connected therewith in the way described.
Embodiments of the invention will be described in more detail with reference to the annexed drawing, which shows:

Figure 6: a fourth embodiment of the tobacco product formed according to the invention, in perspective view; and Figure 7: an auxiliary means for removing the pull-off sleeve from the tobacco portion, in perspective view.
The tobacco product shown in Figure 1 serves for do-it-yourself production of a cigarette, particularly a filter cigarette, with the aid of a previously known filling device such for example as is known from DE-C 28 33 681.
This tobacco product comprises a tobacco portion 11 adapted to the tobacco filling of a finished cigarette on the one hand and, in terms of cross-section and length, adapted to the tobacco receiving space of a preferably prefabricated cigarette paper tube, and held together by a pull-off sleeve 10. The pull-off sleeve 10 in the embodiment shown is wound about the tobacco portion 11 ' CA 02217605 1997-10-06 and only slightly glued, i.e. at points by glue spots 14, along both its overlapping longitudinal edges 12, 13.
Connecting with the outer longitudinal edge 13 of the pull-off sleeve 10 is a grip tab 15 for removing the pull-off sleeve 10 from the tobacco portion 11. The grip tab 15 is glued to the outer side of the external longitudinal edge 13. At the ends the tobacco product is open. The pull-off sleeve 10 preferably comprises a non-smokable, and in particular also non-combustible material, such for example as aluminium-lined paper or plastic foil. Where this latter consists of combustible material, it must be ensured that the tobacco product as such is not smokable apart from a closely-abutting cigarette paper wrapping. For this purpose the pull-off sleeve is air-permeable over its entire length in such a way that the tobacco product cannot be smoked due to the lack of capacity for drawing. In order to ensure that the tobacco product is not smoked along with the pull-off sleeve, the pull-off sleeve may also be provided with additives which when smoked cause such an unpleasant taste or leave such taste behind that smoking is immediately stopped. Thus the smoker should be caused or even obliged to remove the pull-off sleeve before enjoying the tobacco portion, i.e. by means of the grip tab 15. A cigarette is then rolled from the tobacco portion 11 either with the aid of a previously known cigarette paper leaf, or the tobacco portion 11 is pushed by means of a previously known cigarette-filling device ' CA 02217605 1997-10-06 into a prefabricated cigarette paper tube,_particularly filter cigarette paper tube.
The embodiment according to Figure 2 differs from that in Figure 1 in that the pull-off sleeve 10 is only loosely wound about the tobacco portion 11, i.e. is not glued along the overlapping longitudinal edges 12 and 13.
These tobacco portions are held together by the grip tab 15, wound about the pull-off sleeve 10, i.e. by more than 360°. It is connected therewith by one of its ends close to the internal longitudinal edge 12 of the pull-off sleeve 10, and particularly glued thereto. Close to the other end, on the inner side, i.e. on the side facing the pull-off sleeve 10, there is provided a pressure sensitive adhesive layer 16, by means of which this end may be glued to the first-named end of the grip tab 15.
In this way the tobacco portion 11 is reliably held together without the necessity for gluing the longitudinal edge of the pull-off sleeve 10.
In the embodiment according to Figure 6 the grip tab 15 is integrally connected with the pull-off sleeve 10. The grip tab 15 extends over practically the entire length of the pull-off sleeve 10 or tobacco portion 11. The overlapping longitudinal edges 12 and 13 of thepull-off sleeve 10 are glued together over the entire length of the tobacco portion. The corresponding adhesive connection is identified by the reference number 17.
This is a light gluing, i.e. a gluing which is easily ' CA 02217605 1997-10-06 released with only slight traction on the grip tab 15 while simultaneously securely holding thetobacco product. This is preferably a type of pressure sensitive adhesion as is known for self-adhesive notes. The grip tab 15 is in a roughly triangular shape. A trapezoidal or a rectangular form is also imaginable.
The embodiment according to Figure 3 is characterised in that grip tab 15 comprises a relatively rigid material, particularly cardboard or plastic leaf. This ensures that the tobacco product cannot be deliberately or involuntarily introduced into a prefabricated_cigarette paper tube, nor can it be wrapped in cigarette paper leaves, without previous removal of the pull-off sleeve 10 together with the grip tab 15. With reference to the embodiment in Figure 3, in Figures 5a and 5b the handling of the tobacco products described with the aid of a previously known cigarette-filling device is described in more detail. Such a cigarette-filling device comprises an elongate tobacco press chamber, which is defined on the one hand by a roughly half-round solid wall portion 18 and on the other hand by an opposed half-round surface 19 of a movable press bar 20, by means of which the press chamber may be closed after being filled with tobacco, producing a skein-like tobacco supply. At one end of the press chamber there is provided a push-on sleeve for setting and thrusting on an empty cigarette paper tube.
At the other end the press chamber is defined by a piston-like tobacco ejector, by means of which the ' CA 02217605 1997-10-06 . 10 tobacco supply can be transferred out of the press chamber into the cigarette paper tube. In order to increase the functional reliability, a half-shell-shaped spoon may be secured at the effective end of the ejector, said spoon reinforcing the transfer of the tobacco supply out of the press chamber into the cigarette paper tube, simultaneously obtaining stability of the same. A
tobacco product of the type described is inserted into such a press chamber, which in the embodiment shown may be filled from the top, and in such a way that the grip tab 15 projects through the upper feed opening. Then the press bar 20 is moved in the direction of the arrow 21, i.e. in the direction of the closed position of the press chamber, until the tobacco product is lightly clamped between the rigid wall portion 18 and the press bar 20.
Then, according to Figure 5b, the pull-off sleeve 10 is pulled out by means of the grip tab 15 in the direction of the arrow 22 out of the press chamber, leaving the tobacco portion 11 behind in the press chamber. Thereupon the tobacco portion 11, if necessary after further compression by means of the press bar 21, can be transferred in the way described into a prefabricated paper tube. It is self-evident that all the embodiments here described can be handled in the way described with reference to Figure 5a, 5b, using a cigarette-filling device.
Figure 4 shows a portion of a larger unit of smoking tobacco for do-it-yourself production of a cigarette, ' CA 02217605 1997-10-06 which comprises a plurality of tobacco products of the type described, particularly of the type described in Figure 3. The individual tobacco products, comprising tobacco portion 11 and pull-off sleeve 10, are connected together by the grip tabs 15 in the fashion of a cartridge belt, the grip tabs being separable from one another in order to release this connection along a deliberate breakage line, particularly perforated line 23, in such a way that one single tobacco portion together with pull-off sleeve 10 is associated in the way shown in Figure 3 with each grip tab 15. It should also be noted that in this embodiment the grip tab,-as in the embodiment in Figure l, is glued at the outer longitudinal edge 13 of the pull-off sleeve 10.
Furthermore, the overlapping pull-off -sleeve longitudinal edges 12, 13 are glued together at points (glue spots 14), so that this adhesion may be easily removed as required.
It should basically be noted that a solution is also feasible in which the grip tab is connected, particularly glued at any optional point on the pull-off sleeve 10, in such a way that upon pulling the grip tab in the way described the pull-off sleeve breaks off in the direction of adhesion. In this embodiment the pull-off sleeve comprises a correspondingly thin material, i.e. a material which is just sufficient to hold the tobacco portion 11 together. On the other hand, however, upon the slightest pull on the grip tab 15 it is intended to ' CA 02217605 1997-10-06 break open, and over the entire length of the tobacco portion, so that the pull-off sleeve can be entirely removed from the tobacco portion. This embodiment is particularly advantageous in manufacturing terms as no consideration needs to be given to the point at which the grip tab 15 is applied to the pull-off sleeve 10.
Figure 7 now shows an auxiliary means for removing the pull-off sleeve 10 from the tobacco portion by means of the grip tab 15. This involves a metal or plastic sleeve 24, whose length roughly corresponds to that of the tobacco product and which has a cross-section in the form of the numeral "6-, the "6_ not being entirely closed.
In this way a gap is defined for introducing the grip tab 15 and for removal of the pull-off sleeve 10. This gap is identified by the reference number 25 in Figure 7.
The tobacco 11, which remains in the said sleeve 24, may then be pushed by means of a peg, pencil or the like out of the sleeve 24 into a tobacco press chamber of a cigarette-filling device or on to a cigarette paper leaf.
Thus exact pre-portioning is achieved with all the advantages of a defined taste, predetermined toxic content, etc.
All the features disclosed in the Application Documents are claimed as essential to the invention, where, individually or in combination, they are new in comparison to prior art. -' 13 List of Reference Numbers 10. pull-off sleeve 11. tobacco portion 12. longitudinal edge (inner) 13. longitudinal edge (outer) 14. glue point 15. grip tab 16. pressure sensitive adhesive layer 17. adhesive connection 18. rigid wall portion 19. half-round surface 20. press bar 21. arrow 22. arrow 23. perforation line 24. sleeve 25. gap -
