2 PCT/FR96/02102 REVETEMENT DE SURFACES METAi LIQUES
2 PCT / FR96 / 02102 COATING OF METALLIC SURFACES
Description ~ a present invention relates to a coating of metal surfaces and more particularly tubes whose outer surface is coated with a thermoplastic polymer. This technique is used for example to protect buried or submerged pipe lines against corrosion. According to the prior art, heat the tubes between 130 and 200 ~ C then spray powder polyethylene, by fusion a continuous coating of polyethylene is obtained. We can also coat the heated surface with a first layer of grafted polyolefin and then an outer layer of polyethylene.
WO 92/03234 describes a process in which the tube is heated at minus 200 ~ C, then deposit 200} ~ m of epoxy resin, before the end of the crosslinking, a layer of 500 ~ m of an ethylene copolymer is deposited grafted with maleic anhydride and finally a layer of minus 300 µm of polyethylene.
The present invention relates to the coating of metal surfaces which cannot be heated either because they already have a coating on the other surface, for example polyethylene, or because the surface metal cannot be heated, such as, for example, cast iron, or because the metal and the coating of the other side does not support heating. For example, steel pipes the interior of which is painted or coated with polyethylene, or the cast iron pipes or still the cast iron or steel pipes with an internal coating of cement.
These surfaces can hardly be heated above 60 ~ C.
The Applicant has discovered that by using an adhesive having a point VICAT lower or at most substantially equal to the heating temperature possible of the metal surface, one could get coatings with a peeling force of up to 300 or 400 N / 5 cm at 23 ~ C. If the VICAT point is higher than this temperature, then the peel strength is very insufficient and the coating is not acceptable.
The present invention relates to a metal surface coated with a f thermoplastic polymer comprising at least one adhesive disposed between the metallic surface and the thermoplastic polymer the said adhesive having a point VICAT lower or at least substantially equal to the heating temperature possible from the metal surface.
The invention also relates to a method of coating these surfaces ~
CA 02214002 1997-09-0 ~
The invention relates to surfaces which cannot be heated with temperatures usually used for these art steel surfaces anterior, that is to say beyond 100 ~ C and up to 200 ~ C. This is for example the cast iron or cast iron coated on one side with a product that does not withstand high temperatures such as polyethylene or cement. The invention can therefore concern the coating on one or both sides of the surface metallic, depending on whether the other side is already coated or you wish to not coat that one of the faces.
The invention is particularly useful for the external surface of pipes, 10 these pipes can have an outside diameter for example up to 0.8 or 1.5 m and a thickness of 2 to 25 mm.
Within the meaning of the invention, the possible heating temperature means temperatures of the order of 50 to 100 ~ C and most often from 55 to 70 ~ C.
As an example of a thermoplastic polymer, mention may be made of 15 polyolefins, polyamides, mixtures of polyamide and polyolefins, these polymers which can be filled with glass fibers.
Since the metal surface cannot be heated, the temperature of service of the coated surfaces of the invention is low and is also of the order from 50 to 100 ~ C. It is therefore not necessary to use poiyamides. We use 20 advantageously poiyolefins. By way of example of polyolefins, there may be mentioned - polyethylene, ie polypropylene, copolymers of ethylene or of propyiene with at least one alpha olefin. We can cite among others the L ~:) PE, LLDPE, VLDPI ~ and HDPE.
25- copolymers of ethylene with at least one monomer chosen from esters of unsaturated carboxylic acids, carboxylic acids in whole or in part neutralized by metals or alkalis such as zinc or lithium, or vinyl esters of saturated carboxylic acids.
Polyethylene or polypropylene is advantageously used.
~ Ies esters d'acides carboxyliques insaturés tels que par exemple les (méth)acrylates d'alkyle;
A titre d'exemple d'acides carboxyliques, on peut citer l'acide méthacrylique, I'acide maléique, I'acide fumarique, I'acide itaconique, I'acide crotonique, I'anhydride itaconique, I'anhydride nadique, I'anhydride maléique et les anhydrides maléiques substituéstel que par exemple l'anhydride diméthyl maléique.

WO 97/25202 3 ~ The thermoplastic polymer can be loaded with glass fibers, talc, clays, alumina, silica. It can also contain antioxidants, etc.
The adhesive is any product allowing the bonding of the thermoplastic on the metallic surface and having a VICAT point lower or at most substantially equal at the possible heating temperature of the metal surface. The VICAT point is 35 so at most 50 or 100 ~ C and most often 55 to 70 ~ C maximum.
For example for a cast iron tube that cannot be heated beyond 60 ~
C, the adhesive has a VICAT point of at most 60 or 65 ~ C advantageously lower.
55 ~ C and preferably between 20 and 50 ~ C.
CA 022l4002 l997-09-0 ~
According to one form of the invention, the adhesive can be a polymer functionalized by grafting or copolymerization with a monomer chosen from (i) unsaturated carboxylic acids (ii) anhydrides of dicarboxylic acids unsaturated (iii), derivatives of these acids or anhydrides such as salts, 5 amides, imides or esters or (iv) unsaturated epoxides.
According to another form of the invention, the adhesive can be a polymer in a hot melt formulation. Hot melts or hot-melt glue are mixtures of a basic polymer (which constitutes the core of the hot melt) with a tackifying resin, waxes, stabilizers and possibly fillers.
Just choose among these products those with the VICAT point suitable. These adhesives can have a melt flow index (MFI) of 0.5 to 1,000 (g / 10 min at 190 ~ C under 2.16 kg).
The Applicant has also discovered that if the MFi is greater than 10 and preferably between 15 and 100, then the application of the adhesive is easier the layer is homogeneous, it is more likely to obtain a good peel strength.
On the other hand, if the MFi is too low, for example between 0.5 and 10, it is necessary to ensure the distribution of the adhesive over the entire surface.
Advantageously, the adhesive is a copolymer:
- ethylene - optionally one or more monomers chosen from:
~ Ies of unsaturated carboxylic acids such as for example alkyl (meth) acrylates;
~ Ies vinyl esters of saturated carboxylic acids such as by example vinyl acetate or propionate, 2 ~ ~ Ies alpha olefins such as for example butene-1.
- grafted or copolymerized functional monomer described above.
The functional monomer can be an unsaturated carboxylic acid, a anhydride as well as the derivatives of these acids and anhydrides. For exemple carboxylic acids, there may be mentioned methacrylic acid, maleic acid, Fumaric acid, itaconic acid, crotonic acid, itaconic anhydride, Nadic anhydride, maleic anhydride and substituted maleic anhydrides such as, for example, dimethyl maleic anhydride.
As examples of derivatives, mention may be made of salts, amides, imides and esters such as sodium mono and dimaleate, acrylamide, maleimide 'J 35 and dimethyl fumarate.
Among the (meth) acrylic acid salts, mention may be made of zinc salts or lithium ~ ionomers).

- les produits de condensation du bisphénol A et de l'épichlorhydrine;
- les résines epoxy-crésol novolac (ECN);
- les epoxy phénol novolac;
- les résines dérivées du bisphénol F;
- les dérivés des phénols polynucléaires et des glycidyl éther;

The principle of epoxy resins is described for example in KIRK-OTHMER Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology Vol. 9 - pages 267-289 3rd editing. These resins are most often polyglycidyl ether of a polyphenol. We use for example:
- the condensation products of bisphenol A and epichlorohydrin;
- epoxy-cresol novolac resins (ECN);
- epoxy phenol novolac;
- resins derived from bisphenol F;
- derivatives of polynuclear phenols and glycidyl ether;
- cycloaliphatic resins - resins derived from aromatic amines such as:
~ Tetraglycidylmethylenedianiline derivatives ~ Triglycidyl-p-aminophenol derivatives ~ Triazine derivatives such as the triglycidyl isocyanurate - resins derived from hydantoin.
The resins used in the present invention are preferably two-component systems crosslinkable at room temperature. We can crosslink for example with amines such as dimethylethanolamine and methylene dianiline or amides such as dicyandiamide or resins phenolic.
These resins can include additives such as silicones, pigments such as titanium dioxide, iron oxides, carbon black, fillers such as calcium carbonate, talc or mica.
The gel time is advantageously between 20 and 30 minutes.
The freezing time is defined by standard AFNOR NFA 49-706. It's the time required to cause a rapid increase in viscosity to a determined temperature.
It is advantageous to use an epoxy resin in liquid form. We a ~ all the catalyst (to crosslink).
The thickness of the possible layer of epoxy resin can be understood between 20 and 400, um and preferably between 50 and 150 ~ um.
The thickness of the adhesive layer can be between 100 and 500 , um and preferably between 200 and 350, um.
The thickness of the thermoplastic polymer layer can be included between 0.5 and 5 mm and preferably 1.5 and 3 mm.
The present invention also relates to a method for manufacturing these coated surfaces. The metal surface can first be degreased eVou shot blasted or sandblasted. Any epoxy resin is deposited in liquid form CA 022l4002 l997-09-05 on the metal surface. After about 20 to 30 minutes, that is, at the end of the gel time, the tube is heated and then the adhesive is deposited by coating or rolling. Then, the thermoplastic polymer is deposited in the same way.
As for the outer surface of metal tubes, we proceed from the same way for the epoxy resin then the adhesi ~ is extruded in a die ring arranged concentrically around the tube. It can also be extruded in a flat die producing a continuous ribbon which is wrapped around the tube for example thanks to the rotation of the tube on itself. Thermoplastic is filed in the same way.

Crosslinking: for 30 mm at 23 ~ C.
Then we operate as in the previous examples - tube heating to 60 ~ C
- adhesive extrusion and then LDPE: Adhesive: melt temperature = 230 ~ C
LDPE: melt temperature = 220 ~ C
Cooling of the coated tube with water for 3 min.
The adhesion is measured: 400 Nl5 cm at 23 ~ C.
75 N / 5 cm at 50 ~ C
(measurement made on a 50 mm wide strip).
