Description
CA 0220~16 1997-0~-23 Page #l Vibration sensor description ABSTRACT
I call this invention a wheel and bearing monitor.
This monitor or watch dog system consist of three main components.
#1 Is A vibration detector, #2 An infored heat sensor, #3 An indicator pannel remotely mounted.
What this system does is monitor or electronicaly watch the wheel and bearing area of wheeled vechicels, for emissions of excessive heat and vibration, which would indicate A problem with that wheel.
Excessive emissions from the wheel of abnormally high desible levels of vibrations could indicate, #1 Flat or under inflated tiers, #2 Loose wheel nuts or locking wedges causeing wheel to slip on wheel hub spokes, #3 Excessive vibration coming from brake shoes indicating brake shoes being worn out and there is metal to metal contact between shoes and brake drum, #4 Excessive vibration caused by brake drum deformaty or cracking due to overheating, #5 Execssive vibration coning from wheel bearing indicating eventual bearing failure if cause or condition is not corected.
The cause of excessive bearing vibration coulb be, #1 Loose adjustment of bearing, #2 bearing adjustment nut begining to back off, #3 Bearing naturaly worn out, bearing life has been exceded causeing roughness due to pitting, #4 Lack of lubercation to bearing caused by contamination or leaking of oil from wheel hubs, leaving bearing without lubercation, under these conditions the bearing will rapidly heat up locking wheel assembly to axel or bearing will completly discintrate allowing complete wheel assembly to seperate and leave axel which has caused death and injury in the past. A warning form vibration sensor indicates promblem wheel must be investigated very soon.
(note: numbers on this page are not reated to numbers on drawing. ) CA 0220~16 1997-0~-23 Page #2 Infored heat sensoe description ABSTRACT
The infored heat sensor indicates excessive amounts of heat being emitted from any part of the wheel area.
The wheel and bearing monitor is A system which may be decribed in too parts.
#l The vibration sensor is the early warning part of the system indicating action must be taken to corect the problem soon. Alowing the driver of the vechiecl time to find A safe and sutable place to pull in out of trafic to investigate the problem wheel.
#2 A warning from the infored heat system sensor indicates immediate action must be taken, vechiecl must be stopped immediatly.
Heat and vibration sensors are mounted externaly to axel by means of A bolted or welded brackets. Which means they can be very easily mounted to axels allready in use. One heat and vibration sensor is required for each wheel.
Description of warning pannel mounted in cab.
The warning pannel is mounted in the cab of vechiecl.
The warning pannel consist of A warning light and buzzer for each wheel. Each light and buzzer is related to A specfic wheel indicating exactly which wheel has A problem.
(note: numbers on this page are not related to numbers on drawing.) CA 0220~16 1997-0~-23 Page #3 Description of drawing The drawing shows A rear view of half A trailer axel with A set of duel wheels mounted to it.
#l Dual wheels #2 Wheel locking wedges #3 Outer wheel bearing #_4 Brake drum #5 Inner wheel bearing #6 Axel backing plate #7 Vibration sensor #8 Infored heat sensor 1~ ~ Wheel hub spokes 9#~ Wheel nuts #11 SEnsor transmittion wires to warning pannel #12 Detector display pannel mounted 0n cab #13 Warning lights #14 Warning buzzers #15 Infored rays being emitted from sensor #16 Power supply wires #17 Brake shoes (note: numbers on this page are realted to the numbers on drawing.) CA 0220~16 1997-0~-23 Page #4 Desciption of what the wheel monitor system is doing in drawing.
#8 Infored heat sensor emitting infored rays (#15) to pick up excessive heat in any part of the wheel area.
#7 Virbation sensor will pick up excessive vibrations in wheel area.
#11 Tannsmittion wires will transmit information from eensors to warning pannel mounted in cab.
#16 Power supply wires supply power from vechiecl battery to sensors ~3#~ Warning lights l~#~ Warning pannel mounted in cab of vechiecl.
-#~ Warning buzzers, each light and buzzer are wired to their ownpaticular wheel, indecated by the number on the pannel. Pannel repersents trailer with four wheels.
(note: The wheel monitor may be fitted to almost any type of wheel vechiecl including landing gear on planes. Transmition of information through wires (#11) to warning pannel (#12) may be acomplished electronicly but there may be danger of electronic interference under serton conditions.) CA 0220~16 1997-0~-23 Page #5 Another good ferture of the wheel monitor system is that it will be very easy for the Police and highway inforcement officers to check and see that the system is operating properly.
In A road side check, all the inforcement officers need is A device that will emitt the same amount of heat that the sensor is set to eluminate the heat light on the pannel in the cab for that particular wheel which will prove the heat circuit is working properly.
To check vibration sensor circuit all the inspector needs to do is to hold A vibration emitting device in close proximity to the wheel.
The testing device will emitti the same amount of desibles of vibration that the vibration sensor is set at, to set off buzzer for that wheel on pannel in cab.
(note: I am working on such A testing device at present.)
