Description
21 ~3~350 This invention relates to portable container for cigarettes and a cigarette lighter, and more particularly to such a container having a child-proof construction.
Disposable containers used for packaging cigarettes are commonly made of paper, and they do not provide sufficient protection for the cigarettes when such containers are subjected to any outside physical pressure due to the flexibility and the rather sheer construction of such paper containers. When a pack of cigarettes is placed in the smoker's pocket, usually the pack becomes crushed or folded, due to the daily activities engaged by the smoker, to such deformed condition that the cigarettes contained therein may also be mutilated to a degree that they may no longer be usable. Such problem may be avoided by removing the cigarettes from the weak paper box packaging and placing them in a hard container. However, a hard container is normally awkward to carry in the smoker's pocket either due to its bulkiness or rigidity that they cause uncomfortness to the smoker.
Another problem commonly encountered by smokers is in finding the cigarette lighter which may be misplaced or difficult to locate whenever it is required, and it causes a large amount of frustration to the smoker.
Heretofore, cigarettes and cigarette lighter containers either portable or stationary are accessible to children. Since cigarettes may be harmful to children when swallowed or played with, they should be sequestered from children. Furthermore, it is a fire hazard when children have access of the cigarette lighter.
It is a principal object of the present invention to provide a rigid portable container for carrying the cigarettes and cigarette lighter so that both are readily available to the smoker.
5It is another object of the present invention to provide a portable container which is child-proof such that children may not have access of the cigarettes and cigarette lighter contained therein.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a 10portable container which provide complete protection of the cigarettes and cigarette lighter contained therein.
It is yet another object of the present invention to provide a portable container which has a simple construction and is easy and cost effective to fabricate.
15Other objects of this invention will appear in the following description and appended claims, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective elevation view of the child-proof cigarettes and cigarette lighter container according to the present 20invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective side view thereof showing the provision of a mounting clip provided on the container.
Figure 3 is a perspective view thereof with the lids of its cigarettes compartment and lighter compartment in the opened ..
condition.
Figure 4 is a top elevation of the container of the present invention with the locking mechanism in the released condition for opening the lids of the cigarettes compartment and lighter compartment thereof.
With reference to the drawings wherein like reference numerals designate corresponding parts in the several views, the container 10 of the present invention includes a rectangular receptacle 11 having a main compartment 12 and a second compartment 13. The main compartment 12 is usable for holding cigarettes placed therein in the vertical manner, and typically has overall dimensions of 15/16 inches deep 2-1/8 inches wide and 3-5/16 inches high such that 20 standard king size cigarettes may be placed therein. The second compartment 13 is usable for holding a conventional disposable cigarette lighter and typically has overall dimensions of 15/16 inches deep, 3/4 inches wide and 3-5/16 inches high such that the disposable cigarette lighter may be located in the vertical manner therein. The two compartments 12 and 13 are separated by a common vertical partition wall 14 and having upper rim portions 15 and 16 respectively extending upwardly from the vertical side panels 17 and 18 and front panel 19 of the container 10. The surface of the rim portions 15 and 16 are slightly recessed from the surface of the vertical side panels 17 and 18 and the front panel 19. A
substantially U-shaped cut out 20 is formed in the front portion of the rim portion 15 in the main compartment to facilitate the 21 8~50 removal of cigarettes therefrom, and another substantially U-shaped cut out 21 is formed in the front portion of the rim portion 16 in the second compartment to facilitate the removal of the cigarette lighter therefrom.
A protective larger lid 22 is provided for the cigarettes compartment 12 and a protective smaller lid 23 is provided for the cigarette lighter compartment 13. The larger and smaller lids 22 and 23 are hingedly connected to the upper rim 24 of the rear panel 25 of the container 10. In the closed condition, the side and front of the lids 22 and 23 will cover over the recessed upper rim portions 15 and 16 to provide an intimate engagement. The lids 22 and 23 are separated by a narrow gap 26 which accommodates an upper extension portion 27 extending above the upper rims 15 and 16 of the cigarettes compartment 12 and the lighter compartment 13; such that when the lids 22 and 23 are in the closed position, the upper edge 28 of the extension portion 27 will lie just below the upper panels 29 and 30 of the lids 22 and 23 respectively. A latching lever arm 31 is pivotally mounted to the extension portion 27 such that the latching lever arm 31 is pivotable selectively to a front release position located at the front side of the container 10 or to an upright latched position located at the top of the container 10. A cross bar 32 is provided at the free end of the latching lever arm 31. The latching lever arm 31 must be positioned at the front release position with the cross bar 32 located at the front of the container 10 in order that the lids 22 and 23 may be opened 21 ~850 or closed. After the lids 22 and 23 are closed. The cross bar 32 may be operated to pivot the latching lever arm 31 to its upright latched position such that the cross bar 32 is located on top of the lids 22 and 23 to prevent them from opening as well as 5 maintaining the lids tightly closed on the container. A latching slot 33 is formed in the top panel 34 of the lid 23 of the lighter compartment. The latching slot 33 is dimensioned to receive the latching lever arm 31 in a snap action when the latter is located at the upright position, such that to open the lids 22 and 23 the latching lever arm 31 must first be pushed sideways to disengage with the latching slot 33 and then by continuing to pivot it forward towards the front of the container to the front release position before the lids 22 and 23 may be opened. Such simple latching construction provides an effective child-proof safeguard 15 for the container since it requires two combined operations in order to open the lids. Moreover, the latching slot 33 may alternatively be provided in the lid 22 for the cigarettes compartment 12 to provide the same purpose, since once the latching arm lever is engaged with the latching slot, the cross bar 32 would maintain both lids in the closed position. Also, the latching bar 32 may be made in a different shape than a simple bar such as for example two round balls extending sideways from the end of the latching arm lever, which would abut the top of the lids 22 and 23 when the latching arm lever is moved to the upright latched 25 position.
