Abstract

A see-through plastic window is used in a price channel on a merchandise display shelf to form a cover for a non-adhesive label placed in the price channel. The window is adhered in the price channel by an upwardly turned flange formed along its bottom edge and having an adhesive strip along its outer surface. The top of the window has a forwardly extending handle to provide a finger grip enabling the window to be flexed forwardly for insertion and removal of labels.

Description

21813~6 ~nU~SIVE R~r~Fn WINDOW FOR PRIC~ r~NN~TS

Reference to Related APDlication This is a Continuation-in-Part application of Serial No. 08/335,408 filed November 3, 1994 and the contents of which is expressly incorporated herein by reference.

Field of the Invention This invention relates to an adhesive ~ac~ed window which - can be attached to a price cn~nn~l along the front of a merch~n~;~e display shelf to enable non-adhesive labels to be used in the price ch;~nnel, Bac~ uud of the ~nvention Mer~h~n~ice disp~ay shelves in retail outlets such as supermarkets, drugstores ana the like commonly have a price or C-ch~nn~l along the front eage intended to receive snap-in label cards accurately sized to Iit between opposite lips of the ch~nnel or adhesive labels which can be smaller than the height of the els. Price channels, which can be attached to merch~n~;-ce shelving or which form an integral part of the shelf, are also used to mount sign-holder bracke~s or J-hook brackets.
Snap-in label caras are somewhat inconvenient insofar as they must be accurately sized to fit a particular price channel, and adhesive labels while cvercoming this problem, are somewhat more expensive and present ~iff-culties in ~e.,.~vdl and re-use.

2181~96 It is known in the art to use transparent plastic chips which snap-fit into a price channel in the same way as a label card and behind which a non-adhesive label can be fitted prior to mounting the chip in the price channel. Such chips, however, present the same difficulties as snap-in label cards insofar as they must be accurately sized to fit a particular price channel and also they tend to be difficult to remove, particularly as their length increases.

Summarv of the Invention It is an object of the invention to provide a convenient means for enabling non-adhesive labels to be used in a price channel, such means offering secure retention of labels which simplifies the mounting and removal thereof.
According to the invention, there is provided a see-through plastic window, of any desired length, having an adhesive strip on a folded-bac~ flange portion of the window by which the window is attached internally of a price channel. Along its upper edge the window is preferably turned outwardly to provide a gripping edge enabling a user to flex the window forwardly and 20 insert or le...ove labels from behind the window. The window is sized to fit within a C-channel so that its upper edge clears the lip at the top of the channel. The flange extending from the bottom of the window provides a hinge effect enabling the window to flex forwardly without dislodglng the adhesive.

` - 21 81396 The window can be made sufficiently small in height, for example about 1-1/8~ so as to fit substantially any currently used price-channel. By fitting in the interior of the channel, the window does not interfere with the price channel lips, so that clip-type holders and the like can still be fitted in the channel, and it allows for the use of the less expensive non-adhesive labels in a simplified r~nner~
The adhesive strip preferably i9 spaced from the top and bottom edges of the window 90 that when the window is initially fitted into a concave C-~h~nnel~ the adhesive strip will not contact the surface of the ch~nnel. This allow~ the window to be accurately adjusted and positioned prior to pressing the adhesive into engagement with the C-~h~nne~ surface.

Brief Descri~tion of the Drawin~s Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a window according to one emboAi~nt of the instant invention;
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of the window positioned in a price ch~nnel;
Fig. 2A is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing a non-20 adhesive label being inserted behind the window;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged end elevational view of the window;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a preferred windowaccording to the invention;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged end elevational view of the preferred window; and 2 1 8 1 3~6 Figs. 6 and 7 are diagrammatic views showing the manner of fitting the preferred window in a C-channel.

Detailed DescriPtion of the Preferred Embodiments Window 10 is a preferably extruded or die-cut and formed in transparent or semi-transparent plastic, e.g., PVC, P.E.T.G. or butyrate to any convenient length suitable for commercial shelving.
The window comprises a main body panel 12 with an upwardly turned flange 14 along the bottom of lesser height than the body panel and which, in use, is behind the body panel, and an outwardly flared 10-top edge portion 16 which, in use, extends forwardly of the body panel. The flange 14 and top edge portion 16 may be formed in or after the extrusion process. On its outer surface, flange 14 is provided with a strip of adhesive extending at least part way along its length. Alternatively, spaced areas of adhesive can be provided. The adhesive is to be covered by releaæe paper (not shown) which is removed prior to use.
The window 10 is positioned, as shown in Fig. 2 in a price channel 20 along the front edge of a merch~n~i~e shelf 22, by pressing the adhesive 18 against the price channel adjacent to its 20 bottom lip 24. The height of window 10 should be such that when thereby positioned, the flared top portion 16 is acce~sible below the top lip 26 of the price channel, so that the window can be engaged by a user's finger to flex the window forwardly about the connection with flange 14 and allow non-adhesive labels shown in phantom at 26 in Fig. 2A to be placed between the main body panel 12 and the flange 14 of the window or ~e...J~ed therefrom. As previously noted, a window having a height of about 1-1/8~ is generally suitable for use in most price channels.
It is evident that the flexing action of the window does not substantially affect its adhesion to the price ch~nnel. Al80, the window doeæ not provide an impedance to clipping other articles ~uch as sign or J-hook holders into the price ch~nnel.
The modified and preferred window 30 shown in Figs. 4-7 again has a main body panel 31 and a upwardly turned flange 33. In 10 the modified window 30, the adhesive 32 i8 spaced further from the bottom edge of the window than is the adhesive on window 10. This ensures that when the window is initially placed in a concave C-rh~nn~l 34 (Fig. 6), the adhesive does not prematurely contact the surface of the C-ch~nn~l~ Accordingly, accurate adjustment and positioning of the window in the C-ch~nnel is provided for. When properly positioned, the window is pressed against the surface of the C-ch~nnel (Fig. 7) to attach the adhesive at a location spaced from the upper and lower lips 35, 37 of the C-channel.
~elocation of the adhesive may be provided by increasing the height 20 of flange 33 compared with flange 14.
Also, the modified window has a right-angled top handle 36 with an edge ~ead 38 in place of the flanged portion 16. This structure facilitates manipulation of the window for label insertion and removal. In other respects, window 30 is similar to window 10.

While only preferred e-~oA;ments of the invention have been described herein in detail, the invention is not limited thereby and modifications can be made within the scope of the attached claims.
