Abstract

The invention relates to an apparatus for cutting a cigarette into a plurality of sections comprising a housing having an upper and a lower member, aligned apertures in said upper and lower members of housing to slidably receive a cigarette and cutting means.

Description

212~10 FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a cutting device and more particularly to a cutting device for cigarettes.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
A number of smokers assemble their own cigarettes as such cigar~l~es are less costly than the plefolllled ones available in the stores.
Some of the kits available for the ple~ala~ion of one's own cig~,~s colu~lise a roller device which is used for the p~alion of a multiple length cigarette which must then be cut down to pl~ale two or more standard size cigarettes. Some smokers only smoke half of a cigarette at a given time and wish to cut the cigarette in half. The use of col~ ional scissors to cut the cigarettes will tend to collapse the end of the cigarettes thereby di~lolling the cigareKe's tubular shape.
The cigarette cutting device of the present invention allows for the cutting of the cigarette without distortion of the cigdr~ e's tubular shape.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
In a broad aspect, the invention relates to an a~a.~us for cutting a cigarette into a plurality of sections coln~lisillg a housil g having upper and lower members. The housing encloses cutting means and aligned apc.lules e~ ding through the upper and lower members adjacent one end of the housing for slidably receiving a cigarette th~,tlllough. The cutting means comprise a pair of reciprocable blades so arranged adjacent said cigarette receiving aperture as to have a shearing action with one another through the space of said aperture when moved to an operative position thereby to sever a cigarette in said apellule. Blade act~ting means comprise a pair of juxtaposed blade holders. The appaldlus further comprises means locating the blade holders in the housing for holding and guiding the holders and blades between operative and inoperative positions including spring means interconn~cting the holders and biasing the holders and blades to an inoperative position.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The invention is described further, by way of illustration, with cr~lcllce to the accolllpallyillg drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a ~l~ iYe exploded view of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a top view of the cutting means of the present invention in an o~alive position;
Figure 3 is a top view of the cutting means of the present invention in an inoperative position;
Figure 4 is a side view of the cutting blades of a plef~llcd embo-liment;
Figure S is a ~c.~;live view of the assembled cutting device in an ino~a~iv~ position; and Figure 6 is a pel~ iv~ view of the asselllbled cutting device in an operative position.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
The cig~clle cutting device in(lj-~t~l generally at 10 coll~lises a housing 12 having an upper Illc;lllbel 14 and a lower member 16. The upper member 14 and lower member 16 interlock by means of locking guide tabs 18. An aligned aperture 20 extends through the upper member 14 and lower member 16 adjacent the front end 22 of the housing 12 and is adapted to slidably receive a cigarette 24 as illustrated in Figure 1.
The upper member 14 and lower member 16 enclose a cuKing member 26. The cutting member 26 colll~iises a pair of reciprocable blades 28, a pair of blade holders 30, a biasing member 32 and a guiding and locking member 34.
The blades 28 are oriented towards each other at an angle of between 80 and 110which allow the blades 28 to have a shearing or slicmg action with one another. In a preferred embodiment, the blades 28 are, as illustrated in Figure 4, angled towards each other slightly in order to ensure a good contact between the two cutting edges.
The blades 28 are encased into the front edge 36 of the blade holders 30 by insert moulding during the manufacturing process. The biasing member 32 is secured to the back edge 38 and side edge 40 of the blade holder 30. The biasing m~mber 32 co~llplises a spring frame having a yoke member 42, a pair of splayed leaf springs 44 conn~rté~l to blade holder ~ct~l~tin~ arms 46 by a clcscelll-shaped spring 48. The biasing S llælllber 32 biases the ~ g arms 46 to an inopel~liv~; position. The blades 28 are ~ct~l~t~l by applying ~leS~.~ll`e on the ac~ g arms 46 of the biasing member 32.
The cutting device further colll~lises a locking and guiding member 34 which comprises a U-shaped locking base 52 having on its upper and lower surface lock buttons 54. A T-shaped flange 56 is secured to the center of the back edge of the locking base 52. The locking member 34 moves within the yoke mlomh~r 42 of the biasing member 32. The yoke member 42 has ..~ ically disposed projections 58 on the inside of both of its side walls. An oval shape apellule 64 is provided in the upper member 14 and lower member 16 of the housing 12 and adapted to receive the lock buttons 54 of the locking mPmber 26.
The upper member 14 and lower member 16 of the housing 12 further each colll~lise a pair of symmetrical indents 66 which permit easy access to the ~ct~l~ting arms 46 of the biasing member 32 and thus manual operation of the blade holders 30.
In use, the locking member 26 is moved from an inoperative position as illustrated in Figures 1, 3 and 5, where movement of the two blade holders 30 towards each other is prevented by the U-shaped locking base 52, to an operative position illustrated in Figures 2 and 6. In the operative position, the lock buttons 54 are moved rearwardly into the yoke 42 through the oval aperture 64. It should be noted that the projections 58 prevent the locking member 34 from sliding on its own to an operative position during transport, fGr example.
With the locking member 26 slid rearwardly so that the device 10 is in the operative position, a cigarette 24 is slid through the aperture 20 in - ` ~12451~

the upper member 14 and lower member 16 of the housing 12. Pressure is applied to the actl-~ting arms 46 through the indents 66 in the upper member 14 and lower member 16 moving the blade holders ~30 towards each other in order to actuate the blades 28. The a~cllu,es 20 hold the S cigareKe 24 in the proper location with respect to the blades 28. The apellul~s 20 are adapted to support one half of the ~ m~ter of the cigareKe as the two blades 28 slice into the other half of the said cigareKe 24. Once the blades 28 slice half way into the cigareKe 24, the apellu,~s 20 no longer support the cigareKe 24 and the blades 28 are allowed to cut through the rem~ining half of the cigareKe 24 without distorting the cigarette's tubular shape. The positioning of the indents 66 is such as to allow the cuKing of the cigareKe to be done by a simple one hand operation.
While the present invention has been described in connection with a specific embodiment thereof and in a specific use, various modifications will occur to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims. I therefore wish to embody within the scope of the patent which may be granted hereon all of the embodiments as reasonably and properly come within the scope of my contribution to the art.
