Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

An open-head drum for storing and transporting dangerous liquid or solid substances has a body made of thermoplastic material. The open-head drum body is produced simply by cutting out the upper bottom of a new or used tight-head drum.

The invention relates to a lidded drum which has a body made o ther~opla~tic material and may be alo~able by a drum j lid and ten~ion ring in a gastight ~nd li~uid-tight manner for .~
~toring and for tran~porting 601id~ or liquids. The invention is further directed to a ne~ method for making thi~ lidded . drum body.
.~

Lidded drum bodi~ are conventionally made by blow molding in a particul~r gplit blow mold. ~urrent lidded drum~ hav~ a . .. .
~as~ive, stable ~urface flange which i~ up~et at the upper ~, outer ri~ of the drum ~or r2aeiving the dru~ lid and a8 an butment for the ten~ion ring engaging from unde~neath. ~e ~tabl~ ~urace flange i8 up8et directl~ fro~ the material ~f the wall o~ .the drum ~od~ inside the blowinq mold after wing a thermoplastic, tubular pari~on by me~n~ of an annular mold ~ide. After molding the pr~for~ ~or the ~idded ~, drum, flagh (pinch-off) iB separated at the pinch-off areas of the tub~lar parison at the top and bottom. On the ~ide o~ the feed openin~ of the dru~ body, the pinch-~ff consist of a cap~shaped ring part whi~h i~ arranged around ~ ~ow mandr~l and has a greatest pos~i~le diameter in order to preven~ large quantitie~i of fla~h. Thi~ cap piece i~ neatl~ ~evered in the f~eam area of~ the up~et ~riurface flange.

A lidded drum for storing and for transporting solid or liquid contents, with a drum body (20) that is of thermoplastic plastic, that is closeable by means of an appropriate drum lid that is installed thereon, and optionally by means of a tension ring (26) that overlaps the drum lid (24) so as to be gas-tight and liquid-tight, produced by the method defined in claim 1, characterized in that the drum body (20) is made by cutting the upper bottom (12) out of a bunged drum (10) that is ready for use and which serves as the initial product, with at least a small bunghole opening (14) in the upper drum bottom (12) and with an upper peripheral carrying and transport ring (16) (handling ring), such that a feed opening (24) that is of large diameter is formed, a prominent peripheral cutting edge (30) that is arranged on the inside of the drum body wall (18) and spaced at a distance below the upper drum edge (56) being formed, with the carrying and transport ring (16) remaining at the upper edge of the drum body (20) and optionally serving as a support for the drum lid (24) and/or optionally as a stable abutment for the tension ring (26) hooking on from underneath.
3. A lidded drum according to claim 2, characterized in that the the lidded drum body (20) is manufactured from a used bunged drum (10) that is used as the initial product after its initial use or after repeated use.
4. A lidded drum as defined in claim 2 or claim 3, characterized in that the drum body (20) can be closed by means of a drum lid (24) that consists of the upper bottom (12) that has been cut out from the bunged drum (10, 42), a suitably mating, separately prefabricated peripheral annular flange (28) being glued or welded on as a lid edge or as an upper abutment for the tension ring lock (26) that is installed.
5. A lidded drum according to claim 2, 3 or 4, characterized in that the carrying and transport ring (16) or handling ring is formed at the top of the lidded drum body (20) in an essentially massive rectangular form and is provided at the outer rim or inner rim of the upper drum edge (56) with an inwardly recessed section or bevel as a sealing surface (60).
6. A lidded drum according to claim 2, 3, 4 or 5, characterized in that a circumferential protuberance (sealing cam) in form of a semicircular profile (72) or triangular profile (74) is provided as a sealing edge on the upper edge (56) of the drum and/or on the beveled sealing surface (60).
7. A lidded drum as defined in one of the preceding claims 2 to 6, characterized in that the cutting edge (30) is spaced radially at a specific distance from the inner surface of the drum wall so that a supporting edge (46) remains on the inside as an additional lid support (lower support).
8. A lidded drum according to one of the preceding claims 2 to 7, characterized in that the drum lid (24) is fixable on the lidded drum body (20) in a gas-tight and liquid-tight manner by means of the overlapping tension ring (26).
9. A lidded drum according to one of the preceding claims 2 to 7, characterized in that the drum lid is made of plastic material and is formed as a snap-on lid (64) with a lower edge having radially inwardly projecting segmented locking pins (66).
10. A lidded drum according to one of the preceding claims 2 to 7, characterized in that the drum lid is made of sheet steel and provided in form of a clinch lid (68) with a lower rim having segmcnted tongues or segments (70) at the lid rim which are bendable underneath the carrying and transport ring (16) to secure the clinch lid (68) onto the lidded drum body (20).
