Abstract

A degradable product making method includes steps of (i) preparing a first material by sterilizing cereal straws and drying them and then cutting them into thread-like bits or grind them into powder; (ii) preparing a second material by heating a moistened starch into paste-like condition; (iii) mixing the first material with the second material into a mixture; (iv) molding the mixture into shaped products through a heated molding die; (v) covering the shaped products with a layer of degradable plastic film respectively.

Description

~D3THOD OF PRODUCING CON'rATN~ PROI~u~:lS BY MEANS OF THE

SYNTHESIS OF CEREAL STRAWS OR S~T~T ~, STARCH, AND
DEG~ n~RT~ Ml~ RTAT.~

BACRGROUND OF THE lNV~.LlON
The present invention relates to a method of making container products from cereal 6traws, Htarch, and degradable plastics.

A variety of plastics including polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, etc., have been developed for making different contAirers. These plagtics are commonly not degradable or need much time to start decomposing.
Therefore, the use of such plastics produces severe environmental pollution problems. Furthermore, the raw materials for making these plastics are eYpe~ive, and sometime difficult to obtain.

SU~lARY OF THE lNVlS.. lON
The present invention has been accomplished under the aforesaid circumstances. It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a method of making container product6 which utilizes degradable materials for making container products so that the finished container products can be decomposed by organisms under the effect of the sun after their use.

- 211~157 It i8 another object of the present invention to provide a method of making cont~;ner products which permits the finished contAiner products to be emke~e~ in 80il or burnt after their use without releasing toxic subst~n~eæ.

According to the preferred embodiment of the present invention, a first material, which is obtained from cereal straws, and a second material, which i8 obtained from a moi~tened starch, are mixed at the ratio of 30%:70% by weight and then molded into shaped products through a heated molding die, and then the shaped products are respectively covered with a layer of degradable plastic film respectively.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING
Fig. 1 is the production flow chart of the present invention.

DE~TT~n DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
Referring to Figure 1, a base material is obtained from cereal straws or shells, or the fibers of coconuts or other plants (step 100). The base material is then sterilized at a high temperature (step 101), and then dried (step 102). When dried, the base material - 21i~157 is then cut into thread-like bits or ground to powder (8tep 103). It is preferably to cut the base material into thread-like bits of length within 10-30mm, or to grind it to powder of 40-100 meshes. Ca~sava or 5glutinous rice starch or any ~uitable glu~;noll~ plant starch i8 prepared and mixed with water (104), and then kept in a warming contæ;ner which ig maint~;neA at about 70C (step 105) for permitting it to develop to a paste-like status. The thread-like or powdered base 10material thu~ obtAineA from step 103 and the paste-like starch thus obtained from step 106 are then put together (step 200) at the ratio of 70:30 by weight (70% of pa6te-like starch with 30~ of thread-like or powdered base material), and then well mixed (step 201). The 15prepared mixture thus obtained from step 201 i8 then put - into a molding die (step 202) which is kept under 150C
to 160C and has the mold cavity made according to the shape of the desired product. The top die of the molding die is directly heated by gas infrared rays or 20electric infrared rays while the bottom die thereof i8 indirectly heated by fuel gas. Before the molding, a cotton mesh may be dipped in the prepared mixture in the molding die to reinforce the product to be molded ~203).
Then, the prepared mixture is shaped molded into a 25shaped semi-finished product under a suitable pressure (step 204). The pressure employed is subject to the type of the con~i n~r product to be made. For example, 20kg/cm is employed when a dish of diameter lOcm and thickness 2-3mm i~ to be made. The semi-finished product is then covered with a layer of degradable plastic film by means of a heat ~e-l; ng process at 140 to 160C ~step 2051. When finished, the finished product may be printed with patterns to make it fancy or attractive. A finished produat according to the aforesaid process has water-proof and heat-resisting material properties and can be decomposed by organisms under the effect of the sun.

EXAMPLE:
For the production of dishes of diameter lOcm and thickness 2-3mm, it is proceeded as follows. lkg of cassava starch and 1.3kg of water are mixed and developed to a paste-like status in a container being maintained at about 70C. The paste-like starch thus obtained is then well mixed with a cereal straw powder at the ratio of 60-70%:30-40% by weight, and then a cotton mesh is dipped in the mixture, and then the mixture is ~hape molded under temperature 150C-160C
and pressure 20kg/cm, and then the molded product i8 covered with a layer of degrada~le plastics.

211glS7 - Because the present invention u~e only degradable materials for making the desired products, any product made according to the present invention will be self-decomposed within a certain length of time when it is thrown away, and can be collected and used for fertilizer when decayed after its use. Therefore, the ~;~posAl of any products made according to the present invention does not product any toxic matter. Rec~lPQ
the materials are obtAined from natural plants, they can be easily obtained anywhere. Furthermore, the present invention fully utilizes the waste materials of cereal straws and shells which help farmers to gain extra income.

While only one embodiment of the present invention has been shown and described, it will be understood that various modifications and changes could be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
