Abstract

LEG-OPERATED GARDEN TOOLS

ABSTRACT
Leg-operated garden tools comprise of various interchangeable tools attached essentially to the heel of a person' shoe. There are two distinct categories: 1.Tools operated just in the vertical direction, which use the user's weight to do the job. Simply walking across the ground to be cultivated, causes the tools to penetrate into the soil, carrying out different kinds of cultivation practices such as: coring, slicing, spiking and cutting of the turf, creation of bulb-sized planting holes or transplant holes, compression of the soil, etc. The user's weight may activate also some tools mechanisms e.g. that of hinged shears. 2. Tools operated in the horizontal and vertical direction.
The user presses down and at the same time draws the tool either backward or forward. For soil cultivation there are: gap cleaner, all purpose rake, single plow, double plow, cultivator, shallow furrows maker and hoe. There is the possibility to use wheels to activate some tooling mechanisms e.g. rotary shears, or reciprocating shears. All these tools are interchangeable being attached to the tool attachment by a clamping system and to the heel of the shoe by various kinds of attachments which may use a clamping and safety device. The person may wear a conventional shoe or a shoe having secured inside the heel a clamped element of a clamping and safety device. The same tool can be used for different shoe sizes due to the adjustable attachment. In order to achieve the desired practice, various tools can be mounted on the same attachments and the same shoe. For the first category, some tools may be designed also for a heavy animal to be attached to its hoof.

This invention relates to~the leg-operated garden tools and more particularly tovarious interchangeable tools attached essentially to the heel of the foot of an operator, capable to carry out a variety of cultivation practices such as: coring, slicing, spiking or cutting the turf, creating bulb siæd holes, earth cultivation, cutting the grass, etc.
It is common in devices for soil cultivation to use tractor devices or hand-operated tools.
For home use, where the areas are small and the space for maneuvering is limited, power equipment is not adaptable.
Heretofore, various manually powered devices have been provided for different turf 10 cultivation practices. Thus, for slicing and spiking the turf there are different machines ;' having disk-mounted cutters. The cutters' penetration is produced by an additional weight put above their axis. For good slicing, to penetrate the turf to a depth of 3 or 4 inches, devices must be heavy enough, so they are difficult to hold and manipulate.
-j For turf aeration there are some leg operated tools such as:
Saunders U.S. Pat. No. 2,910,127 issued Oct. 27, 1959 shows a multi-tines lawn tool. Tools of this type compress the soil around the holes and they are very difficult to extract.
Canadian Patent Pat. No. 1056191 by Forest, issued June 12, 1979 shows a cross bar securable to the underside of the shoes between the front of the heel and the rear of the sole, and 20 two cylindrical tubes held frictionally at each end of the said cross bar.
They are moreover unsatisfactory for an aeration operation which is very tiresome for the 3~ gardener, because the tubes are not positioned so that their center-line and the leg skeleton are in - vertical alignment, and the penetration and extraction actions of the cylindrical tubes are difficult.
-3 The shoes cannot ever be used for something else and there are not any safety devices to protect the user.

2~3~2 There are other hand-operated tools for soil cultivation. The disadvantages of these kinds of tools consist in the fact that they are not productive enough, are tiresome for the gardener (they take a lot of effort to hold and to push and draw into the earth and the operator's energy is not rationally used) are not user friendly and cannot be used by the , ,,~
handicapped people.
I have found that these disadvantages may be overcome by providing various , "
interchangeable leg-operated tools comprising a tool and means for attaching said tool . essentially below the heel of the foot of the user.
.j According to the direction in which the tool are activated, the invention consists of .i 10 two distinct categories:
1. Tools operated just in the vertical direction.
~, 2. Tools operated in the horizontial and vertical direction.
i The tools of the first category use the user's weight to do the job. Simply walking ,) across the ground to be cultivated, causes the tools to penetrate into the soil, carrying out . different kinds of cultivation practices. According to the shape of the active part of the tool, th~ invention consists of different tools capable to core, slice, spike and cut the turf, create ~:~
bulb-sized planting holes or transplant holes, compress the soil, etc. The user's weight may activate also some tools' mechanisms. According to this æpect, the invention consists of hinged garden shears.
For the tools of the second category the user presses down and at the same time draws the tool either backward or forward. According to the shape of the active part of the ~j tool, the invention consists of: gap cleaner, all purpose rake, single plow, double plow, -~ cultivator, shallow furrows maker and hoe. There is the possibilityto use wheels to activate ' some tooling mechanisms. According to this aspect, the invention consists of garden shears .~ in different versions such as: rotary shears, or reciprocating shears.
~ The body of the tool may be a plate or a plate and at least a bar. The means to hold . '~' .:
., 21~32 the tool to the tool attachment may be said body of the tool, or a tool holder. Said tool . holder may be designed to hold the tool to an interchangeable tool attachment, using some screws, or a tool clamping device, having "Z" shaped cross section slides and a clamping element comprising a spring and a pin, to lock the holder into the tool attachment.
The tool for coring the turf may employ a bag for collecting the made turf cores.

This bag is secured to the tool and to the user's leg and comprising a closing-up element ', and a cord. The bag may be a textile one or a bag comprising a plastic box and a textile bag.
According to the attaching of the tool to the heel of the user, the invention consists of a shoe and means for attaching the tool to said shoe.
The shoe may be an ordinary one or a special shoe which may be a work leather ~' shoe or a plastic shoe, able to be clamped to a clamping device.
,J According to the means for attaching the tool to the heel of an ordinary shoe, the :
invention consists of an adjustable harness and means for attaching the tool to said harness.
According to said harness, the invention consists of at least one stopper and at least one binding element, which secured the harness to the user's leg.
;' The stopper may be a sheet metal one or a plastic stopper.
The binding element may be a textile one tied by a "Velcro"* system, or a plastic one tied by a "Velcro" system or by clasp.
-~ The harness may be attached directly to the tool body by an interchangeable and 20 threadable tool attachment, or to the tool holder by an interchangeable and theadable tool attachment or by a tool clamping device.
~, The tool may be attached to the harness by a clamping device (which is also a safety device), via a tool clamping device.

The plastic shoe consists of an external rigid plastic rear shoe, a comfortable inner shoe, a flexible sole, a hinged plastic cover for closing said shoe using a clasp, an articulated ,. ~

The work leather shoe, able to employ a clamping device, comprises a clarnped .1 member of said clamping device secured inside of its heel.

, 21~c32 garden tool, there are a lot of possible combinations to yield an assembly in relation to the chosen solution for the tool (active part, tool body, tool holder) and for the attachment ~shoe, tool attachment, means for attaching the tool to said shoe, etc).
For the first category, some tools may be designed to be attached to the hoof of a heavy animal, for large surfaces. For example, horses are able to do automatically themselves the turf aeration.
THE ADVANTAGES OF THE INVENTION consist in the fact that the leg-operated tools ~, , proposed are:

~ - They assure a good productivity for non powered tools.
.., ~i - The turf slicing or spiking can be done during mowing time.
- They rninilI~i~ the operator's effort in gardening.
- For hard work the user can use his strongest muscles - the leg muscles - using rationaUy his body.
- No gas or electricity is consumed.
~J GENERALPURPOSE:
- Using the same shoe, the same attachment and binding elements, the user can ~ mount different tools to do various soil cultivation practices such as: coring, slicing, - j spiking or cutting the turf, making transplant holes, etc.
- Using an adjustable harness the any leg-operated tool can be used for any conventional shoe.

He is able to use the same shoe as a conventional one, without the tool.
USERFRIENDLY:
- No effort to hold the tools - the attachrnent works for the user.
5~ - No effort to push the tool into the ground - the gravity works for the user.
. - For the tools of the first category, by simply walking across the lawn and using his weight, the user forces the tools to penetrate into the ground and execute different practices.
- By the position of the tool's active parts in symmetrical locations and having their - 10 axes of symmetry in the same vertical plane with the user's leg shinbone, it is not difficult for the gardener to force the tool to penetrate into the soil.
- By simply pressing in the vertical direction, or by a simple twist movement, the user attaches or detaches the tool, using a fast clamping attachment.
- The user can change anytime very quickly any tool - they are interchangeable.
- There is no effort for the user to extract the tools, because he uses the foot lever in a natural movement. Further, the taper shape of the active parts of the toolsfacilitates their extraction.

- A safety device attachment, detaches automatically the tool for the dangerous positions of the user's leg.
- The comfortable inner shoe of the plastic shoe protects the user's foot against the .~ shocks during tool operation.

~ - They allow the user to practice a very useful and good physical exercise.
ii - They allow the user to work in the garden doing natural movements.
~;, 10 - This design concept for the leg-operated tools enables handicapped people to ~ work in the garden and to do the majority of the soil and the turf cultivations.

Using the same principle, the soil cultivation assembly adapted to a heavy animal allows extension of all the said advantages to the big surfaces.

` The leg-operated garden tool has the structure shown in the flowchart of Figure 1 comprising a tool and means for attaching the tool to the heel of the foot of the user.
In Figures 2 and 3 are illustrated the possibilities to operate the tools attached to the . shoe's heel. In relation to these possibilities, may be designed two distinct categories of tools:

2. Tools operated in the vertical and horizontal direction (Figure 3).
. Figure 4 illustrates the possibilities to design a tool for each category. Any tool :

The advantage of the tools of the first category consists in the fact that the operator uses his own weight to operate the tool, so the effort of the user is minirnal. In this category may be designed various tools having different active part such as:

The operator's weight causes the tool penetration in the soil and creates a soil core which is ,~ .

To eliminate the soil core, the operator pulls the cable 10 which activates the lever 8 opening the tube by pivotal action of the rear side half conical tube with respect to the front side one. The spring 9 closes the tube when the operator releases the cable 10.
- Multi~bulb planter illustrated in Figures 15, 16 and 17 employs as active part many conical tubes 12 affixed on two adjustable bars 13 and 14 secured to the tool body . 4 by the clamp 11 using the bolts 17. The distance between the conical tubes may be adjusted within a certain interval (maximum - minimum). For different hole depths there is , the possibility to adjust each conical tube in the vertical direction (see Figure 16) by the 10 holes lSa, lSb, 15c and bolts 18 (see Figure 17). To be able to calibrate the top hole edge, the plate 16 compresses the soil around the hole. Figures 18, 19 and 20 show another variant of the multi-bulb planter where the conical tubes 19 are adjustable on the bars 20 'j which are secured to the tool body 4 by the plate 21.
Turf coring aerator shown in ~igures 21 and 22 employs as active part two conical tubes 22 affilxed outside the heel, generally in symmetrical locations. When the .~ tubes penetrate into the ground, they cut cylindrical plugs 23 and when they exit, they extract cores 23 from the turf. To eliminate the cores 23, the support 24 has a hole in line with each tube 22, having a bigger diameterthan thebiggest inner diameter of the tube. Each ~3 plug 23a is pushed out from the conical tube by the next one when the tube penetrates 20 again. The conical tubes 22 may be secured to the support 24 in any way, e.g. by spot welding.
Collecting bug 25 shown in Figures 23 and 24 may be employed in order to ~: collect the cylindrical plugs after they are removed from the turf. This bag is attached to the ~ tool body 24 and to the useis shoe 1, so that it surrounds the shoe. The bag 25 has two -, holes in line with the conical tubes 22, which represent the bag entrances. The bag bottom side must be in contact with the body 24 and rigidly mounted around the entrance hole~.
. - 16-21 ~8 ~32 The bag may have a plastic box 28 mounted on the tool body 24 to which is secured a textile part 29 (see Figures 25 and 26). The cord 26 closes up the bag, on the opposite side, by strangling it with a closing up element 27. The cord 26 enables the operator to handle the bag manually whilst working, as well as empty it.
lur~edger shown in Figures 27, 28, 29 and 30 employs as active part a single sharpened knife blade 30 generally in line with the shinbone axis placed in a longitudinal or i transverse position with respect to the foot axis.
: Turf slicing aerator illustrated in Figures 31 and 33 employs two big v-shaped knives 31 making deep penetrations into the ground, and slicing the turf. They may have 10 any other shape.
Turf spiking aerator shown in Figures 33 and 34 employs as active part many ;. rows of small v-shaped knives 32 making shallow penetrations into the ground, and spiking the turf. They may have any other shape. It should be particularly pointed out that the ~s` slicing and spiking practices are employed between core cultivations for achieving similar but less dramatic results. Since they cause only minor disruptions to the turf, they can be employed as often as weekly during the growing season to mitigate the soil compacting effects of traffic.
ln Figures 35 to 44 are illustrated the turf edger, turf slicing aerator, turf spiking ` ~ aerator and multi-bulb planter in the version where their active parts are mounted on the 20 opposite side of the plate on which the conical tubes for coring are welded. All these active parts are removeable.
Soil compressor illustrated in Figures 45 and 46 employs as active part a variety .~ of plates 33, attached to the shoe's heel, to compress the soil. In order to modify the weight, the user may employ different numbers of plates 33. The user's weight is integrally used.

21~8~32 ~ Hinged shears shown in Figures 72 and 73 have the possibility to work in a ; horizontal plane (Figure 72) or in the vertical one (Figure 73), simply by turning ninety degrees the blades 47,48, the support 49 and the bar 50 around the bar axisrelative to the tool body 108. The pin Sl locks the blades in a suitable position. The shears are activated by the lever 53 and the bar 50, while the shoe goes down and compresses the springs 54 and SS. When the weighting action disappears the springs open the shears.
Rotary shears shown in Figures 74 and 75 are used to cut the grass near the patio stones in a vertical plane. They are provided with a toothed disk 56 activated by the wheel 57, which is rotated by a horizontal movement of the user's leg. The grass is cut by the . 10 single tooth blade 58 which is affixed to the support axis 59 and does not move. The opposite wheel 60 maintains the cutting disk 56 all the time in a plane normal to the ground.
~' Reciprocating shears shown in Figures 76, 77 and 78 are used to cut the grass generally near the patio stones in a horizontal plane. They are provided with two :i reciprocating blades 61 and 63 having cutting teeth on both lateral sides. The inferior blade 61 is secured to the shear support 62. The superior blade 63 moves in the longitudinal ,~,.!
direction. It is activated by the frontal cam of the wheel 64 which moves the bar 65 affixed to the blade 63 compressing the spring 66. The wheel 64 is activated by a horizontal movement of the operator's leg. There is the possibility to adjust the elevation of the shears' blades so that the user may cut the grass to different lengths. This adjustment in various parallel positions of the shears' blades, is produced by a quadruple mechanism having one element 67 affLxed to the shears support 62, another one 70 affixed to the tool support 75 (via bolt 78 and axle 79) and two other moveable elements 68 and 69. The elastic lever 71 secured to the moveable element 68 allows the level adjustment of the shears, when the pin 72 affixed to it, is introduced into different holes 73 made in the element 70. These shears are active in both directions - backward and/or forward. There are two wheels 74 mounted on the opposite side of the shears support 75 allowing the movement of the blades all the .~ 1 9 :' .~. .

21~8~32 time in a parallel plane to the ground surface. In some particular cases, an adjustable blade support 76 may be used allowing a constant distance to be kept between the ground and the shears' blades all along thereof.
- ' Based on the same principle any other leg-operated tool may be designed having its active part shaped so that it can answer to a certain need.
For some tools (example all the tools used for the turf cultivation practices - coring, slicing, spiking and turf edging, and for bulb planting) it may be more cost effective to use removeable active parts mounted onto the same tool body (e.g. plate) like in Figures 35 to 44.
Figure 79 illustrates a synthesis comprising the various possibilities to design the , j 10 active part of a leg-operated garden tool, and the Figure 80 shows the structure of different collecting bags.
` Figure 81 shows different possibilities to design the body of a leg-operated garden tool as a plate, a plate and at least a bar or any other shape illustrated in the Figures 47 to 78.
Figure 82 shows the possibilities to design the means for holding the tool to the attachment - using directly the body of the tool or using a tool holder. Any one of these variants assures an interchangeable holding using an interchangeable tool attachment as is ~ illustrated in Figure 83. All tools which need a horizontal movement may have the holder : such that they can be drawn either backward and/or forward.
ln Pigure 84 is shown a holder secured to an interchangeable tool attachment by 20 some screws.
In Figures 85, 86 and 87 is illustrated a tool holder secured to an interchangeable ~ tool attachment which is a tool clamping device. Hence, the tool holder is a calibrated blade .~ 79 having many holes 80 on the center line. The body of the tool clamping device 4b has , two perpendicular slide guides in the longitudinal and transverse direction of the foot. The slide guides have a "Z" shaped cross section. The pin 81 secured to the elastic blade 82 enters into the hole 80 and affLlces the holder to the tool attachment. To deitach the tool, the .~

: ~ ' 21~8~32 user has to press on the blade 82 to extract the pin 81 from the hole 80 and then, he can ` extract the holder 79 from the guide. Using different holes 80 the user is able to adjust the tool with respect to his shoe's size, especially for the tools drawn backward. The means for attaching the tool to the heel of the foot of the user comprises a shoe and means for attaching the tool to the heel of said shoe, see Figure 89.
. The shoe may be an ordinary one or a special one - plastic shoe or work leather shoe, see Figure 90.
The means for attaching the tool to the heel of an ordinary shoe comprise an ~ 10 adjustable harness and means for attaching the tool to said harness, see Figure 91.
,i The adjustable harness comprises at least one stopper which locates the heel of the ~ shoe in the right position with respect to the tool body and means for attaching the stopper .`i to the user's leg, see Figure 92.

Figures 103 and 104 illustrate embodiments of the invention comprising a work leather shoe 92 and a clamping device which is also a safety device.
This attachment uses a plate 87 secured inside of the shoe heel which is clarnped onto the body of the clamping device 88 by the clamp 89. The spring 90 presses the clamp .. ~
- 89 to affix the tool onto the shoe. The bolt 91 adjusts the spring force. The plate 88 may be , secured to the tool body 4 by the screws 94, (see Figure 103) or incorporated into the tool ~, body 4 (see Figure 104). To detach the shoe, the user has to twist the shoe. In this way the clamping device works as a safety device too, detaching the user's leg when the person does a wrong movement. The shoe can be a leather work shoe, Figures 103, 104, 105 and 106 or a plastic one, Figures 107 and 105. The clamping plate 87 is secured inside of the shoe heel, allowing the user a big flexibility. He is able to use this shoe 92 or the plastic shoe with or without the tool attached. The structure of a plastic shoe is illustrates in Figure 108 and of a - ' work leather shoe in Figure 109.
The plastic shoe (Figure 107) is high enough to protect the calf of the user's leg. It comprises an external rigid plastic partial rear shoe, a comfortable inner shoe 103, a clamped : plate 87 secured inside of its heel and a flexible sole 95. T'he inner shoe may be higher than the outer one for the safety considerations. The hinged plastic cover 96 closes the shoe with the clasp 97. The articulated rigid plastic cover 98 protects the user's foot .I'he hinge 99 and the crawler shoe link 100 allow a natural movement to the foot. The components 96, 98, ~j, 101 and 102 are made by rigid plastic, having a safety role. T'his shoe is comfortable by ,3 using an internal shoe 103 which attenuates shocks during tool operation.

Claims (105)

1. A leg-operated garden tool comprising a tool and means for attaching said tool essentially below the heel of the foot of the user.
2. A leg-operated garden tool as defined in claim 1 wherein said tool is activated essentially in vertical direction.
3. A leg-operated garden tool as defined in claim 2 wherein said tool, activated in vertical direction, comprising a body, means to hold said tool to said means for attaching said tool essentially bellow the heel of the foot of the user and at least one active part mounted to said body.
4. A leg-operated garden tool as defined in claim 3 wherein the symmetry axis of said active part is essentially located in the same plane with the shinbone of the user and generally in symmetrical locations with respect to the foot axis.
5. A leg-operated garden tool as defined in claim 4 wherein said active part comprising at least one conical tube capable of punching and removing soil or turf cores in order to make holes in the ground.
6. A leg-operated garden tool as defined in claim 5 wherein said tool comprises a bag for collecting said resulting turf cores, means for attaching said bag to said tool, means for closing up said bag and means for manipulating the extremity of said bag by the user.

A leg-operated garden tool, activated in vertical direction and having the symmetry axis of its active part essentially located in the same plane with the shinbone of the user and generally in symmetrical locations with respect to the foot axis, comprising at least one conical tube capable of punching and removing soil or turf cores in order to make holes in the ground, a bag for collecting said resulting turf cores and means for attaching said bag to said tool.
8. A leg-operated garden tool as defined in claim 6 wherein said bag comprises a textile bag.
9. A leg-operated garden tool as defined in claim 8 wherein said means for closing up said bag comprise a cord and a closing up element which closes up by strangling said bag.
10. A leg-operated garden tool as defined in claim 9 wherein said means for manipulating the extremity of said bag by the user comprise said cord.
11. A leg-operated garden tool comprising a bag for collecting resulting turf cores, which comprises a textile bag attached to said tool, a cord and a closing up element.
12. A leg-operated garden tool as defined in claim 6 wherein said bag comprises a plastic box secured to said tool and a textile bag attached to said plastic box.

23. A leg-operated garden tool as defined in claim 5 wherein said conical tubes are adjustable in the horizontal direction on the body of said tool allowing to adjust the distance between the made holes.
24. A leg-operated garden tool as defined in claim 23 wherein said body of said tool comprising two transverse bars adjustable in horizontal direction to which said conical tubes are mounted.

A leg-operated garden tool, activated in vertical direction, comprising means for attaching said tool to the heel of the foot of the user, means to hold said tool to said means for attaching said tool and conical tubes, adjustable in the horizontal direction, which are mounted to two transverse bars adjustable in the horizontal direction too, allowing to adjust the distance between the made holes.
26. A leg-operated garden tool as defined in claim 5 wherein said conical tubes are adjustable in the horizontal and vertical direction on the body of said tool allowing to adjust the distance between the made holes and their depth.
27. A leg-operated garden tool as defined in claim 26 wherein said body of said tool comprises two pears of transverse bars adjustable in horizontal direction to which are mounted said conical tubes - adjustable in vertical direction.

comprises a clamped member which is a plate PCD, a body BCD, a clamp CCD, a spring SCD, a system to adjust the force of said spring SCD, means for attaching said plate PCD to said shoe and means for attaching said body BCD to said tool.
545. A leg-operated garden tool as defined in claim 544 wherein said clamping device CD is also a safety device able to detach automatically said tool for dangerous position of the user's leg.
546. A leg-operated garden tool as defined in claim 545 wherein said clamped member secured inside of the heel of said work leather shoe is said plate PCD of said clamping device.
547. A leg-operated garden tool comprising a work leather shoe including a plate PCD
secured inside of the heel of said work leather shoe which is a clamped member of a clamping device CD defined in claim 333.
548. A leg-operated garden tool comprising a work leather shoe defined in claim 547 and a clamping device CD defined in claim 333.

A leg-operated garden tool comprising a work leather shoe defined in claim 547, a clamping device CD, which is also a safety device able to detach automatically said tool for dangerous position of the user's leg, including a plate PCD, a body BCD attached to said body of said tool by an interchangeable and screwable attachment, a clamp CCD, a spring SCD, a system to adjust the force of said spring SCD, and means for attaching said plate PCD to said work leather shoe.
