ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

A method of suspending scaffolding from a completed roof is described. Firstly, anchor a pair of bodies to a first slope of a roof opposite a second slope of the roof from an edge of which a scaffolding is to be suspended. Each body has a coupling end which projects above a peak of the roof; the coupling end having a female coupling. Secondly, insert first ends of a pair of elongate members into the female couplings on the bodies and secure the first ends in place. A second end of the elongate members extends past the edge of the second slope. Thirdly, position support columns adjacent the second end of the elongate members, The support columns are disposed between the second slope and the elongate member such that the support columns are the only point of contact on the second slope. Fourthly, suspend the scaffolding from the second ends of the elongate members.

Description

3 ~3 ~ !d~ ~
The present inventiorlrelate~ to a method and an apparatue for suspending scaffolding from a completed rooiE.

CK&ROVND 0F T~lE IMVEIITION

Prior to a roof of a building being completed, it is a relatively ~imple matter to suspend scafiEolding around the periphery o the roof by placing hook-like bracket~ over exterior walls. Once the roof has been completed, however, it is difiEicult to suspend scaffolding from the completed roof in a manner which will bear the weight of men and equipment without getting in the way oie workmen attempting to eiEfect repairs to the roof. The best example oiE this iæ where the roof is in need of reshingling. When reshingling a rooiE
scaffolding should be used iEor safety reasons. ~owever, often worl~len attempt the job oiE reshingling without the use of scaffolding as the only available means of attachment to the 2 0 roof would cover a large portion of the work area and unduly impede their progress~

8UM~aRY 0~ TB XNYE~
-What is required is a method and an apparatus iEor æuspending scaiEiEolding from a completed roof covers a minimal portion oiE working area.

According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of suspending scaffolding from a completed roof which includes the following steps. Firstly, anchor a pair of bodies to a Pirst slope oiE a rooiE oppo ite a second slope of the roo;e from an edge of which a ~cafiEolding is to be su~pended~ Each body has a coupling and which projects above a peak of the roof; the coupling end having a iEemale coupling.
Secondly, insert iEirst ends oiE a pair of elongats members into the female couplings on the bodie~ and secure the first ends in place. A second end oiE the ~lon-gate members exte~ds past 2 ~ 3 ~
the edge o~ the second ~lope. Thirdlyl position ~upport column~ adjacent the second end o~ the elongate member~. The support columns are disposed between the second ~lope and the elongate member such that the ~upport column~ are -the only point v~ contact on the second slope. Fourthly, su~pend the sca~folding from the æecond ends of the elongate members.

When khe teachings o~ the described method are followed the ~caffolding iæ securely held in po~ition with minimal obstructions of the second ~lope on which the workmen are working. The only points of contact on the ~econd ~lope of the roo~ is where the support columns rest. If the forces exerted upon the apparatus are analyzed, it is apparent that the ma~or ~orce component created by the weight of the sca~folding i8 a lS downward force upon the support column~ The possibility of the bodies becoming detached from the first glope of the roof is extremely remote. There are a number of alternative embodiments for apparatus capable of being used to follow the teachings o~ the described method.
~0 According to another aspect of the present invention there i8 provided an apparatus for æuspending scaffolding from a completed roof. The apparatus includes a pair of bodies. Each body has a coupli~g end and an anchoring end~ The coupling end has a female coupling. The anchoring end has means to anchor the body to a roof. A pair of elongate members are provided.
Each of the elongate members has a first end and a second end.
The first ends are insertable into the female couplings on the bodies. Means is provided to lock the first ends of the elongate me~bers within the female couplingæ. The second ends of the elongate me~bers have mean to suspend a scaffolding~

Although beneficial results may be obtained through the ~se of the apparatlls~ as described, roofs come in a wide variety of pitches. Even more beneficial results may/
there~ore, be obtained whe~ the angle of the female coupling iæ adjustable in relation to the body such that the female coupling is angularly ad~ustable to aacommodate roof~ of varying pitch.

Although beneficial re~ults may be obtain through the u~e of the apparatus, as de~cribed, the apparakus has greater stability if the female coupling ie; fixed in position. Even more beneficial results may, there~ore, be obtained when the female coupling ha~ ~t least ona upwardly projecting fin which describe a segment of a circle. The :Ein has a plurality of axially aligned apertures. The bodly has at least one arm in parallel spaced relation to the f.in; the arm having an aperture. The ~emale coupling is locked in a preselected angular position by extending a locking pin through the aperture in the arm and a selected one of the apertures in the fin.

The preferred embodiment, an apparatus for suspending æcaffolding from a completed roof generally identified by '3 ~

reference numeral 10, will now be described with reference to FI~UR~S l through 4.

Referring ~o FI~UR~ 1 and 2, app~ratus 10 includes a pair of bodies 12. Although only one of bodies 12 is illustratedg it will be under~tood that ~caffolding 14 mu~t be supported at 0ither end in a like manner. Each of bodies 12 has a coupling end 16 and an anchoring end lB~ Coupling end 16 i~ a female coupling 20 a~apted to telescopically receive an elongate member 22, as will hereinafter be fuxther described. Anchoring end 18 has a plate 24 having apertures Inot shown) through which lag bolts 26 are driven to anchor bodies 12 to a roof 28.
Roof 28 has a first slope 29 and a second slope 31. It is preferred that lag bolt~ hav~ a minimum penetration of 3 inches into roof 28. It iæ preferred that the angle of female coupling 20 be adjuætable in relation to b~dies 12. This enable~ female coupling 20 to be angularly adjusted to accommodate roo~s 28 of varying pitch. In order to attach female coupling 20 to bodies 12 a locking pin 38 is inserted through aligned apertures 39 in female coupling 20 and bodies 12. Locking pin 38 serves as a pivotal connection allowing an angular adjustment o female coupling 20 to be made relative to bodies 12. The means of locking female coupling 20 in a pre~elected angular position in relation to bodies 12 includes a pair of upwardly pro~ecting fins 32 which describe a segment of a circle. Each of bodies 12 have a pair of arms 36 in parallel spaced relation to fins 32. In order to lock female coupling 20 in a æelected angular position a locking pin ~not shown) i~ extended through aligned apertures 41 in arms 36 and fins 32. Thexe are a number of alternate selection positions identified by rsference numeral 43. ~ach o pair of elongate members 22 has a first end 42 and a second Pnd 44. First ends 42 ar~ in~ertable into female couplings 20 on bodie~ 12. First ~nds 42 of elongate members 22 also have apertures 39.
Referring to FI~UX~ 3, locking pin 33 which i~ u~ed to couple female couplillg 20 to bodies 12 is the 6ame mean~ u~ed to lock first ends 42 of elongate members 22 within female coupling 20 ~ ~ ~3 '~3 ~ 3 by inserting locking pin 38 throuyh aligned apertuxes 39. In order to en~ure that the connection between elongate membe~Y
22 and female coupling 20 has suf~icient ~trength, a ~econd locking pin (not shown) extend~ through a second apertu~e 47.
The means u~ed to suspend scaffoldi.ng 14 from second ends 44 of elongate member~ 22 i8 a locking pin 50 which extend~
through aligned apertureY 51, as illustrated in FIBU~E 4.

The use and operation of apparatus 10 will now be described with reference to FI~UR~ 1 through ~. Apparatus 10 was developed for use in accordance with a preferred method of suspending ~caf~olding 14 from a completed roof 28. The method involves the following step~. Fi.rstly, anchor pair of bodie~
12 to the fir~t slope 29 of roof 28 opposite ~econd slope 31 of roof 28 from an edge 54 of which scaffolding 14 i8 to be suspended. This i~ accomplished in the illustrated embodiment by inserting lag bolt~ 26 through the apertures ~not shown) in plate 24 at anchoring end 18 of bodie~ 12. La~ bolts 26 are ~ecurely fa~tened to slope 29 of roof 28~ Secondly, insert first ends 42 of pair of elongate members 22 into female couplings 20 on bodie~ 12 and ~ecure fir~t ends 42 in place.
~his is accomplished in the illustrated embodiment by inserting lo~king pin 38 through axially aligned apertures 39 female coupling 20, first end 42 of elongate member 22 and bodies 12.
Female coupling 20 i~ then oriented to accommodate the pitch of roof 28 and locked in a preselected anyular position by inserting a locking pin (not shown) through aligned apertures 41 in arms 36 and in fins 32. Elongate member~ 22 are further ~ecured in position by inserting an additional locking pin (not shown) through aligned apertures 47. Second end 44 of elongate members 22 æhould extend pa~t edge 54 of second slope 31.
Thirdly, position underlying support column~ 56 adjacent second end 44 of elongate member~ 22~ ~nderlying support columns 56 are disposed between second ~lope 31 and elongate me~ber 22.
It is preferred that support columns 56 be the only point of contact on ~eco~d ~lope 31 where workmen will be working.
Fourthly, ~uspend scaffolding 14 from second ends 44 of elongate members 22. Ref0rr.ing to FI~UR~ 4, in the illu~trated embodiment this is accompllshed by inserting locking pin 50 through ~xially aligned apertures 51.

It will be apparent to one skilled in that art that the illustrated method and apparatus for ~uspending ~caffolding 14 from a completed roof, secures scaffolding 14 with minimal interference with second slope 31 on which workmen will be working. It will also be apparent to one ~killed in the art that modifications may be made to the illu~trated embodiment without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the claims.
