Abstract

An ointment consisting of the following described ingredients expressed as a percentage of volume. The ingredients being: between 28% and 61% corn starch; between 5% and 30% an antifungal agent compatible with human skin; and between 30% and 60% petroleum jelly.

Description

2~8~62 The present invention relates to an ointment.

R~ ROUND 0~ T~ INVENTIO~
Corn starch iB an odourless byproduct derived from corn with a slight characteristic taste. It is used extensively in food preparation. It can be purcha~ed in either irregular angular white masses or a fine powder form.

Corn starch has long been recognized as having absorben-t and demulcent properties. To take advantage of its properties as an absorbent, it is used in a powder form. To take advantage of its properties as a demulcent, tWQ CUpS of corn starch adde~ to hot bath water i~ reco -n~ed *o reliev~ rashes and other skin irritations which cause itching.

It is ill advised to apply corn starch indescr; r; nAntly to human skin, as it's absorbent proper~ie~ will lead to excess drying of the skin.
S~M~ARY OF T~E l~v~.~ION
What is required is a corn starch preparation which is suited for domestic use.

According to the presenk invention there is provided an ointment which i8 comprised of the following described ingredients expressed as a percentage of volume. The ingredients being: between 28% and 61% corn ~tarch; between 5~ and 30% an antifllngal agent compatible with human skin; and between 30% tc 60% petroleum jelly.

In this composition the corn starch serves it usual function as an absorbent and a demulcent. The petroleum jelly serves as a base for the ointment and also prevents the corn starch from excessively drying the skin. The anti~ungal agent guards againsk yeast infections and the like and lengthens the shelf life of the ointmentO

Although the broad range percentage described will bring beneficial results, it is preferred that the oini --~ have~ -between 50% and 60% corn starch; between 7% and 10% nystatin;
and between 30% and 40% petroleum jelly.
DE~TT-~n DESCRIPTIO~ OF T~E ~ h~ ~BODIMENT
The preferred embodiment, an ointment, will now be described. The ingredients for the ointment which will hereinafter be described are expressed as a percentage of total volume. The primary ingredients of the ointment are corn starch, petroleum jelly, and an antifungal agent~ The use of base substances, othPr than petroleum jelly~ was found to not have beneficial results as the petroleum jelly was the only base capable of preventing the corn starch from unduly drying human skin. The composition without the antifungal agent was found to promote the growth of yeast infections and the like.
:
The operative rarlge of the ingredient corn starch is between 28% and 61%. When the ointment contains less than 28%
corn starch, the beneficial absor~ent and demulcent qualities of the ointment are lost. When the ointment contains morP than 61~ corn starch, the corn starch has been found to ex~essively dry the skin. It is preferred that the corn starch represerlt between 50% and 60~ of the ointment. The best ~'all purpo~e"
ointment cont~ins approximately 56~ corn starch. In tha lower effective ranges of corn starch, ie. 28% to 38% the drying ef~ect of the corn starch is not as effectiYe for such skin conditions as acne or athlete's foot.

The operative range of the antifungal agent compatible with human skin is between 5% and 30%. Successful resul-ts have been obtained through the use of the antifungal agent knc)wn by th~ generic name of "Nystatin". When the oinl - t contains less than 5% the antifungal agent i5 ineffective. When the ointment contains more 30%, excess antifungal agent is taking the place of other ingredients to the detximent of the effectiveness of the ointment. It is preferred that the 2 ~ 6 2 ~:

, ointment have between 7% and 10% nystatin. The best "all purpose" ointment contains approximately 9% nystatin.

The operative range of petroleum jelly is between 30~ and ~0~. When-the ointment contains less than 30% petroleum jelly, the relative strength of the corn starch and nystatin is excessive/ resulting in excess drying of the skin. In addition the ointment becomes "pasty" and difficult to apply. When the ointment contains more 60%, excess petroleum jelly is taking the place of corn starch to the detriment of the effectiveness o~ the ointment. It is preferred that the ointment have bekween 30% and 40% petroleum jelly. The best "all purpose"
ointment contains approximately 35% petroleum jelly.
It will be apparent to one skilled in the art that modifications may be made to the preferred "all purpose"
ointment without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the claims.
