TITLE: CONTROL DEVICE FOR RATCHET WRENCHES
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A ratchet wrench including a housing, a recess formed in an upper portion of the housing, a ratchet wheel rotatably disposed in one end of the housing, a pawl pivotally disposed beside the ratchet wheel for engagement with the ratchet wheel, a slide slidably disposed in the recess, and a resilient member having one end engaged in the slide and the other end slidably engaged with the pawl, the pawl is caused to engage with the ratchet wheel when the slide is pushed toward and away from the pawl.
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A ratchet wrench including a housing, a recess formed in an upper portion of the housing, a ratchet wheel rotatably disposed in one end of the housing, a pawl pivotally disposed beside the ratchet wheel for engagement with the ratchet wheel, a slide slidably disposed in the recess, and a resilient member having one end engaged in the slide and the other end slidably engaged with the pawl, the pawl is caused to engage with the ratchet wheel when the slide is pushed toward and away from the pawl.

2 BAC~GROUND OF TXE INVENTION 2~77~7 3 1. Field of the Invention 4 The present invention relates to a ratchet wrench, and more particularly to a control device for ratchet 6 wrenches.
7 2. Description of the Prior Art 8 The closest prior art of which applicant is aware 9 is his prior U.S. Patent No. 4,862,775 to Chow, entitled "CONTROL DEVICE FOR RATCHET WR~NCHES", filed 11 October 19, 1988. In this ratchet wrench, the knob is 12 caused to move along the groove of the control element 13 in order to switch the rotational directions of the 14 ratchet wrench; however, the knob can not move along the groove of the control element smoothly.
16 The present invention has arisen to mitigate 17 and/or obviate the afore-described disadvantages of the 18 conventional ratchet wrenches.
19 S~MMARY OF TXE INVENTION
The primary objective of the present invention is 21 ' to provide a control device of a ratchet wrench which 22 can be operated smoothly.
23 In accordance with one aspect of the invention, 24 there is provided a ratchet wrench comprising a housing including a recess formed in an upper portion thereof 26 and enclosed by a cover, a ratchet wheel rotatably 27 disposed in a first end of the housing, a pawl 28 pivotally disposed in the first end of the housing and ~ 7 1 including a first tooth and a second tooth for 2 engagement with the ratchet wheel respectively, a 3 depression formed in one side of the pawl, a slide 4 slidably disposed in the recess and including a slit formed therein, and a resilient member including a 6 first end engaged in the slit of the slide and a second 7 end slidably engaged with the depression, whereby, the 8 first tooth and the second tooth of the pawl are caused 9 to engage with the ratchet wheel respectively when the pawl is rotated by engagement between the second end of 11 the resilient member and the depression of the pawl and 12 when the slide is pushed toward and away from the pawl.
13 Further objectives and advantages of the present 14 invention will become apparent from a careful reading of the detailed description provided hereinbelow, with 16 appropriate refersnce to the accompanying drawings. i~ ;

23 DETAI~ED DE8CRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED ENBODIMENT
24 Referring to the drawings, and initially to FIGS.
1 and 2, a ratchet wrench in accordance with the 26 present invention comprises generally a housing 10 27 including a recess 11 formed in the upper portion --28 thereof and enclosed by a cover 30, a cap 36 enclosing , .

1 the lower portion of the housing 10 and including two 2 openings formed therein, a ratchet wheel 16 rotatably 3 received in the first end of the housing 10, and a pawl 4 15 rotatably(rotatably~supported in the housing 10 by a pin 33 which is fixed between the cover 30 and the cap 6 36, the pawl 15 including a curved depression 151 7 formed in one side portion thereof and a first tooth 8 152 and a second tooth 153 formed thereon for 9 engagement with the ratchet wheel 16 respectively.
The control device for the ratchet wrench includes 11 a block 12 formed integral in the middle portion of the 12 recess 11 of the housing 10 and having a hole 121 and a 13 notch 122 formed therein, a stop 13 formed in the 14 housing 10 and located between the first end of the housing 10 and the block 12, a slide 20 slidable 16 between the stop 13 and the block 12 and including an 17 orifice 21 and a slit 22 formed therein, an extension 13 201 extended from the slide 20 and slidably engaged in 19 the notch 122 of the block 12 and having a hole 23 formed therein, a spring I4 engaged in the holes i21 21 and 23 of the block 12 and the extension 201 of the 22 slide 20, and a resilient member 24 lncluding a flange -23 241 formed in one end for engagement in the slit 22 of 24 the slide 20 and a bent portion 242 formed in the other 2S end for slidable engagement with the curved depression 26 151 of the pawl 15, and a knob 32 including a stub 321 27 extended downward through the oblong hole 3l of the 28 cover 30 and engaged in the~orifice 21 of the slide 20 :~ .
- 2g~7~7 ~ in order to move the slide 20, the stop 13 and the 2 block 12 limit the movements of the slide 20.
3 In operation, referring next to FIGS. 2, 3 and 4, 4 when the slide 20 is moved rearward to the position as shown in FIG. 2, the first tooth 152 of the pàwl 15 is 6 caused to engage with the ratchet wheel 16 such that 7 the ratchet wheel 16 can not rotate clockwise and is 8 rotatable counterclockwise. When the slide 20 is moved 9 to the middle position as shown in FIG. 3, both the teeth 152, 153 of the pawl 15 are not engaged with the 11 ratchet wheel 16 such that the ratchet wheel 16 is 12 rotatable in both directions. When the slide 20 is 13 moved forward to the position as shown in FIG. 4, the 14 second tooth 153 of the pawl 15 is caused to engage with the ratchet wheel 16 such that the ratchet wheel 16 16 can not rotate counterclockwise and is rotatable 17 clockwise.
18 It is preferable that the spring 14 is a 19 compression and coil spring and arranged such that the slide 20 can be maintained at the positions as shown in 21 FIGS. 2 to 4.
22 Accordingly, the control device f or a ratchet 23 wrench in accordance with the present invention can be -24 operated smoothly.
Although this invention has been described with a 26 certain degree of particularity, it is to be understood 27 that the present disclosure has been made by way of 28 example only and that numerous changes ~n the detailed 1 construction and the combination and arrangement of 2 parts may be resorted to without departing from the 3 spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter 4 claimed.

In this ratchet wrench, the knob is 12 caused to move along the groove of the control element 13 in order to switch the rotational directions of the 14 ratchet wrench; however, the knob can not move along the groove of the control element smoothly.
16 The present invention has arisen to mitigate 17 and/or obviate the afore-described disadvantages of the 18 conventional ratchet wrenches.
19 S~MMARY OF TXE INVENTION
The primary objective of the present invention is 21 ' to provide a control device of a ratchet wrench which 22 can be operated smoothly.
23 In accordance with one aspect of the invention, 24 there is provided a ratchet wrench comprising a housing including a recess formed in an upper portion thereof 26 and enclosed by a cover, a ratchet wheel rotatably 27 disposed in a first end of the housing, a pawl 28 pivotally disposed in the first end of the housing and ~ 7 1 including a first tooth and a second tooth for 2 engagement with the ratchet wheel respectively, a 3 depression formed in one side of the pawl, a slide 4 slidably disposed in the recess and including a slit formed therein, and a resilient member including a 6 first end engaged in the slit of the slide and a second 7 end slidably engaged with the depression, whereby, the 8 first tooth and the second tooth of the pawl are caused 9 to engage with the ratchet wheel respectively when the pawl is rotated by engagement between the second end of 11 the resilient member and the depression of the pawl and 12 when the slide is pushed toward and away from the pawl.
13 Further objectives and advantages of the present 14 invention will become apparent from a careful reading of the detailed description provided hereinbelow, with 16 appropriate refersnce to the accompanying drawings. i~ ;

1 the lower portion of the housing 10 and including two 2 openings formed therein, a ratchet wheel 16 rotatably 3 received in the first end of the housing 10, and a pawl 4 15 rotatably(rotatably~supported in the housing 10 by a pin 33 which is fixed between the cover 30 and the cap 6 36, the pawl 15 including a curved depression 151 7 formed in one side portion thereof and a first tooth 8 152 and a second tooth 153 formed thereon for 9 engagement with the ratchet wheel 16 respectively.
The control device for the ratchet wrench includes 11 a block 12 formed integral in the middle portion of the 12 recess 11 of the housing 10 and having a hole 121 and a 13 notch 122 formed therein, a stop 13 formed in the 14 housing 10 and located between the first end of the housing 10 and the block 12, a slide 20 slidable 16 between the stop 13 and the block 12 and including an 17 orifice 21 and a slit 22 formed therein, an extension 13 201 extended from the slide 20 and slidably engaged in 19 the notch 122 of the block 12 and having a hole 23 formed therein, a spring I4 engaged in the holes i21 21 and 23 of the block 12 and the extension 201 of the 22 slide 20, and a resilient member 24 lncluding a flange -23 241 formed in one end for engagement in the slit 22 of 24 the slide 20 and a bent portion 242 formed in the other 2S end for slidable engagement with the curved depression 26 151 of the pawl 15, and a knob 32 including a stub 321 27 extended downward through the oblong hole 3l of the 28 cover 30 and engaged in the~orifice 21 of the slide 20 :~ .
- 2g~7~7 ~ in order to move the slide 20, the stop 13 and the 2 block 12 limit the movements of the slide 20.
3 In operation, referring next to FIGS. 2, 3 and 4, 4 when the slide 20 is moved rearward to the position as shown in FIG. 2, the first tooth 152 of the pàwl 15 is 6 caused to engage with the ratchet wheel 16 such that 7 the ratchet wheel 16 can not rotate clockwise and is 8 rotatable counterclockwise. When the slide 20 is moved 9 to the middle position as shown in FIG. 3, both the teeth 152, 153 of the pawl 15 are not engaged with the 11 ratchet wheel 16 such that the ratchet wheel 16 is 12 rotatable in both directions. When the slide 20 is 13 moved forward to the position as shown in FIG. 4, the 14 second tooth 153 of the pawl 15 is caused to engage with the ratchet wheel 16 such that the ratchet wheel 16 16 can not rotate counterclockwise and is rotatable 17 clockwise.
18 It is preferable that the spring 14 is a 19 compression and coil spring and arranged such that the slide 20 can be maintained at the positions as shown in 21 FIGS. 2 to 4.
22 Accordingly, the control device f or a ratchet 23 wrench in accordance with the present invention can be -24 operated smoothly.

Claims (3)
1. A ratchet wrench comprising a housing including a recess formed in an upper portion thereof and enclosed by a cover, a ratchet wheel rotatably disposed in a first end of said housing, a pawl pivotally disposed in said first end of said housing and including a first tooth and a second tooth for engagement with said ratchet wheel respectively, a depression formed in one side of said pawl, a slide slidably disposed in said recess and including a slit formed therein, and a resilient member including a first end engaged in said slit of said slide and a second end slidably engaged with said depression, whereby, said first tooth and said second tooth of said pawl are caused to engage with said ratchet wheel respectively when said pawl is rotated by engagement between said second end of said resilient member and said depression of said pawl and when said slide is pushed toward and away from said pawl, and means for limiting movement of said slide, said limiting means including a block formed in a middle portion of said recess and a stop formed in said recess and located between said block and said pawl, said slide is slidable between stop and said block.
2. A ratchet wrench according to claim 1, wherein said block includes a notch formed therein, said slide includes an extension slidably engaged in said notch of said block.
3. A ratchet wrench according to claim 2 further comprising a spring engaged between said extension of said slide and said block.
