Abstract
ABSTRACT
A serpentine ribbon guide that is arranged ahead of the take-up spool is provided to relieve the force on the take-up spool of a cassette for an ink or thermal ribbon.
A serpentine ribbon guide that is arranged ahead of the take-up spool is provided to relieve the force on the take-up spool of a cassette for an ink or thermal ribbon.
Description
2063~8 The present invention relates to an arrangement in a tape cassette, which provides for the force-locking relief of the take-up spool that is fitted with a slip coupling, in which the ink or thermal ribbon is passed from a supply spool, over guide rolls, past a print head, to a take-up spool. Ink and thermal printer cassettes generally incorporate a supply spool and a take-up spool for the ribbon. A plurality of rolls serve to guide the ribbon. In order to achieve consistent print quality it is necessary to keep the ribbon taut, especially in the case of thermal printers. Several ways of keeping the ribbon under appropriate tension and preventing hangups are known (DE-38 08 603 Al, DE-38 00 113 Al, EP-0 189 984 Bl). Common to all of these arrangements is that when the machine is switched on and at rest, a ribbon drive that is used for take-up always exerts a force on the ribbon. This can lead to the fact that even when the paper that is to be imprinted is not in contact with the ribbon, or else is in contact with the paper but is not moving, an additional ribbon advance will take place because of the tension that is exerted by the take-up spool.
It is the task of the present invention to ensure that the take-up is uncoupled from the forces that can be achieved by friction between the ink ribbon and the paper, and to do this in the case of take-up tension that is exerted permanently and on demand.
.. . .
20~S68 According to a broad aspect of the invention there is provided an arrangement in a tape cassette, which provides for force-locking relief oE a take-up spool that is fitted with a slip coupling, in which an ink or thermal ribbon is passed from a supply spool, over guide rolls, past a print head, to the take-up spool, characterized in that a serpentine ribbon guide is provided between deflection rolls that are arranged between the print head and the take-up spool.
The present invention is described in greater detail on the basis of the drawing appended hereto.
The cassette 1 for ink or thermal ribbons 2 passes around a supply spool 3 and a take-up spool 4. A plurality of deflection rolls 5 serve to guide the ribbon. The ribbon 2 passes from the supply spool 3, past the print head 6, to the take-up spool 4. Between the deflection rolls 5 that are arranged after the print head 6 and ahead of the take-up spool 4 there is an additional serpentine ribbon guide 7. This serpentine ribbon guide 7 comprises a plurality of off-set rolls. An arrangement consisting of three rolls has been proven to be expedient. Relief of the force on the take-up spool 4 results from this serpentine ribbon guide, because increased friction results from the angle of grip of the ribbon on the ribbon guide 7. This means that the tension can vary through a wide range without the ribbon 2 being drawn off the supply spool 3 when at rest. The ribbon will move only when the angle of grip is reduced by the ribbon 2 advancing beyond the friction between the ribbon 2 and the paper 8.
It is the task of the present invention to ensure that the take-up is uncoupled from the forces that can be achieved by friction between the ink ribbon and the paper, and to do this in the case of take-up tension that is exerted permanently and on demand.
