Abstract

The invention relates to a backrest for a chair, armchair, seat or the like with two laterally disposed shell-shaped back elements which are shaped like the support surfaces of horse saddles and are concavely shaped in respect of an axis extending substantially perpendicular to the seat surface and convexly shaped in respect of a horizontal transverse axis above the seat surface, the shell-shaped back elements (1) being attached substantially in the central portion thereof to a crossrail (20) disposed therebehind by means of one or more rubber elements (32) such that the connecting surfaces between the rubber elements (32) and force-transmitting angled metal members (30, 31, 33) or U-shaped metal elements lie in a horizontal or predominantly horizontal plane.
