Description

A METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR OPERATING A MICROWAVE OVEN
TO EXECUTE A pRor-RAMMRn COOKING CYCLE
FIELD OF THE IRVERTIO~
The present invention relates to microwave ovens, and more particularly to means for operating a microwave oven to execute a programmed cooking cycle.
L RAI'V~l)l]RD
In conventional microwave ovens, the execution of a programmed cooking cycle is interrupted by opening the door of the microwave oven. When the door is closed again the start key must be depressed in order to continue the interrupted programmed cooking cycle.
Hence, if a user opens the door to observe the cooking, and then closes the door without depressing the start key, the programmed cooking cycle remains interrupted. Consequently, the programmed cooking cycle cannot continue to execute in accordance with the programmed instructions.
S~MMAR~ OF TEE I~VXRTIO~
The object of the present invention is to provide a means for enabling a microwave oven to continue an interrupted programmed cooking cycle without inputting an additional start key signal after opening and reclosing the door during the execution of the programmed cooking cycle.
According to one aspect of the present invention, a method for executing a programmed cooking cycle of a microwave oven comprises the steps of interrupting a means for executing the programmed cooking cycle if the door of the microwave oven is opened during the execution of the programmed cooking cycle, and automatically continuing the programmed cooking cycle stored in a storage means without an additional key input when the door is reclosed.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided an apparatus for executing a programmed cooking cycle in a microwave oven, comprising a key input means for selecting a cooking function, a key input decoder for decoding the data input using the key input means, a storage means for storing a cooking program 205~563 , obtained by decoding the data, an execution means for executing the cooking program, a clock means for timing the duration of a programmed cooking cycle, a door switch sensing means for sensing the opening/closing of a door of the microwave oven in order to make a decision as to whether execution of the cooking program should continue, and a display means for displaying an open state of the door if the door is opened during a cooking cycle.
The present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the drawings attached.
BRIEF DESCRIPTIO~ OF THX ATTAC~D DRAWIR~S
FIG. 1 is a block diagram illustrating the operational flow of the circuit of a microwave oven according to the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a schematic diagram of a display means for notifying a user of the opening of the door during the operation of the microwave oven;
FIG. 3 is a block diagram for schematically illustrating the circuit of an apparatus for performing a programmed cooking cycle in the inventive microwave oven; and FIG. 4 is a flow chart of the execution of a programmed cooking cycle in the inventive microwave oven.
~TT.Tcn ~ VTpTIo~ OF A OE RTAI~ b~ EMBODIME~T
As shown in FIG. 1, the circuit of a microwave oven in accordance with the present invention comprises a power source 2, reset means 3, frequency generating means 4, door signal sensing means 5, and a key signal input means 11, which constitutes a circuit for receiving external input. A microcomputer 1 is driven by the external input, and includes an internal program for executing a programmed cooking cycle. The microcomputer 1 controls a magnetron drive circuit 6, a motor/lamp drive circuit 7, a buzzer drive circuit 8, and a display device 9.
Referring to FIG. 2, the display device 9 comprises first, second, third and fourth display parts 91-94, which display a predetermined cooking time or the time of day. Each segment a-g of the first, second, third and fourth display parts includes a plurality of LEDS. The display device 9 also displays characters to .

indicate that the door of the microwave oven has been opened, if it is opened during the execution of programmed cooking cycle.
Referring to FIG. 3, the data input using the key input signal means 11 is decoded by a key input decoder means 12. The decoded cooking program is stored in a storage device 14, and executed by a cooking program execution means 15. The time for executing the cooking program is controlled by a clock means 13. A door switch sensing means 16 senses the opened/closed state of the door in order to control the storage means 14 and clock means 13. The data for displaying the characters to indicate an opening door is stored in a storage means so that the characters may be displayed if the door is opened during the execution of a cooking cycle.
Hereinafter, the steps for executing a programmed cooking cycle by a microwave oven in accordance with the present invention will now be described with reference to FIG. 4.
In order to accomplish programmed microwave cooking, a cooking program must be inputted using the key input means 11, shown in FIGS.
1 and 3. The input key signal data is decoded by the key decoder means 12, and the decoded cooking program is stored in the storage means 14. In addition, a signal for starting the cooking program is input as shown in step 101. A decision is made in step 102 as to whether the programmed cooking cycle i8 executed. If the programmed cooking cycle is under execution, the cooking routine is executed by the execution mean~ 15 and clock means 13 until a predetermined cooking time has elapsed as shown in step 103. However, if the programmed cooking cycle is not being executed, a programmed bit signal for indicating the end of the predetermined cooking time is set, as shown in step 105, and the opened/closed condition of the door i8 checked by the door signal sensing means 5 and door switch sensing means 16 (see FIG. 3) in step 106.
If the door is opened, the door state display routine is performed in step 121 in order to display the characters "door", as shown in FIG. 2, and the cooking program interruption routine is performed in step 122. The display device 9 displays the characters instead of the time while the door is open by selectively lighting 20~563 the segments a,b,c,e,f,g of the first, second, third and fourth display parts 91-94. Of course, if the door is closed, the display device displays the time. The characters "door", for example, are displayed by lighting the segments a,b,c,d,e,g or b,c,d,f,g of the first display part 91 to display "D" or "d", the segments c,d,f,g of the second and third display parts 92 and 93 to display "o", and the segments a,c,f or c,f of the fourth display part 94 to display "r".
If the door signal sensing means dete_ ~nes in step 106 that the door is closed, the bit signal for indicating the end of the predetermined cooking time is reset by means of the reset means 3 in step 107, and the cooking program is executed in step 109 or the cooking completion routine is performed in step 110, according to the selection made in step 108 which determines the cooking program stored in the storage means 14.
If the door is opened before the end of the predetermined cooking time in step 104, the next routine is performed after the characters "door"are displayed by using the door state display storage means 17 and display device 9.
Thus, according to the inventive microwave oven, even if the door of the microwave oven is opened in order to include an additional dish or to do other work during the execution of a programmed cooking cycle, and the door is closed again, the temporarily interrupted cooking program is resumed without an additional start key input.
