Description
2023il7 FI~LD OF TIH~ IN~ ~IQ~
A garment to be worn by ostomates that can receive and support at least one 06tomy appliance.
DESCRIP~ION OF P~IOR A~
Persons that have undergone sur~ical procedure~ whereby portions of their urinary and/or intestinal tr~ct have been diverted to an abdominal stoma must wear ostomy appliances to collect the body wastes that are emitted through this etoma.
Ostomy appliances are well known in the art and are commercially available. A typical ostomy appliance comprises: a wafer `~ containing an aperture to receive the stoma, that is secured to the abdomen of the user; and a waste collection bag that contains an O-ring portion that fits snugly to a flange member on the wafer.
Some ostomy appliances further comprise a means for draining the bag without the need to detach it from the flange portion.
Means of support for such ostomy appliances have typically been either encircling belts or undergarments. Encircling belts for the support of ostomy appliances are described in U.S. patents nos.

2,156,425 (Bowman) 3,532,092 (Rodgers) and 4,319,571 ~Winchell).
These belts, however, do not generally provide sufficient support for the appliance or comfort for the user. Furthermore, undergarments must be worn in addition to the belt.
Undergarments ~or containing ost~my appliances are described in U.S. patents nos. 3,421,505 (Freeman et al~, 2,778,362 (Pollock et al) and 4,533,355 (Fair). In these garments, a pocket for holdin~
the ostomy appliance is contained on the exterior surface of the garment. Therefore, the waste collectlon bag must traverse a hole 2023~1~
or slit in the garment before it can be placed in the pocket. This is cumbersome when the garment must be removed or replaced when it contains waste. Furthermore, as such an exterior pocket is visible, these garments must further provide for a flap that covers the pocket to keep the ostomy appliance from view.
A garment containing an interior pocket for retaining the ostomy bag is described in U.S. patent no. 4,888,006 (Beaupied). This pocket has an opening defined by a cri~s-cross arrangement of material. This opening receives the bag of the ostomy appliance and surrounds the flange member of the appliance. The pocket occupies the entire front portion of the garment and thus the bag is not adequately supported as it is free to move laterally within the pocket. Furthermore, although this garment adequately conceals the appliance fr~m view, it still has the drawback as described for the other garments. Namely, the entire waste collection bag must traverse the opening in the garment in order to be placed into the pocket. Such a manipulation is especially cumbersome when the bag is not entirely empty.
In addition, these prior art garments also require that the garment be removed in order to empty the bag.
., .,.',:'~:, Therefore, there is a need for an ostomy garment that can adequately support and conceal an ostomy appliance without requiring a great deal of manipulation and maintenance on behalf of the wearer.

SUMMARY OF THE PRESENT INVENTlON
This invention relates to a garment to be worn by individuals that wear ostomy appliances.
~ 10 :'~ ' The garment contains at least one pocket in the interior of the front portion of the garment that can retain an ostomy appliance.
The garment is designed so that the bag of the ostomy appliance can be placed directly into 15 the pocket with little manipulation. The pocket further supports the bag which is especially important as the bag becomes full.
Such a garment also provides that the ostomy appliance is concealed and thus not perceptible to others.
The garment also provides that the bag may be emptied without the need to remove the garment.
1EP ~ , 2023~
~his garment also allows for the addition of a removable crotch panel to allow the user to access this area without the need for rernoval of the garment.
Therefore, this inven~ion in particular provides a garment to be worn by an individual who S uses an ostomy appliance for collecting body waste through a stoma, said ostomy appliance having an ostomy collection bag for the collection of body ~,vaste and cormection means for connecting the ostorny bag to the stoma, comprising `~ ~ ~
waist, front, back and crotch portions fixed together to form said garment, said ~-garment having an exterior side and an opposed interior body side; and ~`-at least one pocket contained in the interior of the front portion of the garment for retaining the ostomy bag;
and `
wherein each said pocket comprises a first upper opening disposed on said body side `
of the garment, said pocket and said upper opening thereof being configured and disposed such that, -when the ostomy bag is connected to the stoma by the connection means and the garment is on the individual such that the ostomy bag is disposed in said pocket, the ostomy bag can be slipped out of the pocket, through the upper opening, by -puiling the garment downwardly.

l he pocket of the garment may also comprise a second opening distal from the first opening to allow for draining of the appliance. ;~

DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, the garmént (10) comprises a waistband (~0) that supports :~ front (30) and rear (40) porlions, and a crotch portion (50). The waistband, front, rear and crotch portions are sewn together to form a typical pant. The waistband :~`
` ~' 2023~17 (20) of the garment contacts the tor80 above the stoma region. The front portion ~30) contains two poc:kets (60) and ~70) in its interior surface.
~' 5 A typical two part ostomy appliance is shown in Figure 3. Said -~
appliance comprises a wafer (90), that adheres to the skin surrounding the stoma. ~he stoma meets with aperture (91) in the wafer. When the appliance is worn, fl~nge member (92) of the wafer fits securely into the 0-ring (81) of the bag (80)~

Figure 2 illustrates an in ide view of the garment wherein the pocXet (60) supports an ostomy appliance. For simplicity, the appliance i8 illustrated without the wafer portion (90) that adheres to the body. Said pocket (60) is designed with a V-shaped 15 opening (61) near the waist portion to accommodate the o-ring (81) ~ -which, when in use, is secured to the flange member (92) of the ostomy appliance. The bag (80) of the ostomy appliance fits snugly ;1 `~
in the pocket (60). The draining valve (82) of the bag traverses a hole (62) in the lower end of the pocket (distal to opening `~
(61)).

whereby the opening, located near the waist portion (20), for `
receiving the pouch of the appliance is rounded (71). It is to be ~-~25 noted that on a given undergarment, the pockets may both be identical at this upper end.
`'.-',' '.'.`~
The pockets (60) and (70) can be made detachable to allow the pocket to be placed directly in line with the user's ~toma. ~-Therefore, such a garment can also support an ostomy appliance that is fitted closer to the center o~ the user's body. `~
:
The crotch portion (50) can be made removable to give easy access to this area wlthout the need ~or renoving the g~rnent.
` ^` 2023117 While figures 1 and 2 are drawn to a garment containing two pockets, it is understood that this description also applies to a similar garment containing only one pocket.
It is also to be noted that while the above description relates to boxer short style undergarment, the same invention can b~ applied to other styles of undergarments as well as other garments such as shorts or swimming trunks. It is unders~ood that all suah garments can be worn by males or females.
While the above description refers to specific embodiments of the invention, it is to be noted that other variations and modifications may also be made without departing from the principles of the invention as claimed.
