Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There is disclosed a garbage bag holder which is releasably mounted on the inside of a cupboard door. The holder includes mountings permitting pivotal move-ment of a lid which is held open and maintained in the same position while the cupboard door is open and material is being put into the bag.

Description

~23~ 1~

This invention relates to a garbage bag holder, and in particular to a holder which is mounted on the inside of a cupboard door.
Various forms of such holders exist. Either no lid is provided, which is not tidy and also allows aromas to escape, or the lid is attached to the holder and must be lifted up before putting material in a bag which lines the holder. Foot-operated bins are available in which the lid is lifted up by pressure on a pedal, but these o are free standing and not capable of being mounted on a door.
A further problem which often occurs is that even when the lid is lifted up, it may not stay in place. A
slight knock on the holder, can result in the lid drop-ping down, sometimes as material is being put in the holder, some of the material then being deflected onto a floor or into a cupboard, or both. ~-The present invention is concerned with a garbage holder, for releasable mounting on the inside of a cup-board door, in which the lid is opened and maintained out of a closing condition while material is being put into the holder.
In one particular example, the lid is pivoted about a horizontal axis extending in the lateral direction of the holder. On movement of the holder, as by opening of the door, the holder swings away from under the lid which is mounted so as to pivot as the holder moves.
Considering the back of the holder being that part against the door and the front being spaced forward from the back, it is arranged that the front edge of the lid moves down, the back edge moving up. In this manner, as the door is closed, the front of the holder contacts the lid and pushes the front part or edge up and inward with -~
the rear edge moving round and over the top of the Thus, ` 2~3~1 the lid is removed and replaced as the holder is moved out and returned.
In many arrangements, the holder is semi-permanently attached to the door by screws. In an embodiment of the present invention, a mounting member is mounted on the door, the mounting member having inclined grooves in which inclined bars on the holder can be inserted, with a downward movement of the holder engaging the bars in the grooves. Removal of the holder is first by lifting the holder to release the bars. This enables the holder to be easily removed and replaced, for cleaning for example.
In an example of a mounting member on a door, pro-vision may be made for holding a sllpply of bag ties. A
mounting member can have provisions for holding a lid if the lid is loose on the holder and not pivoted away from the holder when a door is opened.
Probably, the invention comprises a garbage bag holder, for mounting on the door, and having a separate lid which is removed from the holder and held clear while material is put into the holder. Particulary, the lid is pivotally mounted about a horizontal axis extending laterally, a front edge of the lid swinging forward and down as the holder is moved down out of the closed position. -The invention will be readily understood by the following description of certain embodiments, by way of -~
example, in which~

closed positions; -~

Figure 2 is a front view of Figure 1, with the lid removed;
Figure 3 is a top plan view in the direction of arrow A in Figure 1;

Figure 4 is a top plan view as in Figure 3, but for the condition of Figure 2;
Figures 5, 6 and 7 are front, side and top views respectively of a mounting member for a holder;
Figures 8, 9, and 10 are front, side, and top views respectively of an alternative form of mounting members;
Figures 11, 12 and 13 are front, side and top views of a holder for ties for inserting in a mounting member.
A garbage bag holder is seen in side and front views in Figures 1 and 2, comprising, in the example, a fairly heavy wire or rod frame 10, having two side members 11 joined at the top by an elongated top frame 12 having front and back edges 13 and 14 respectively.
The side edges of the frame are each in two sections, 15 (a) and (b) and 16 (a) and (b), the sections inclined to each other. This can be seen in Figure 4. At the bot-tom the side members bend backwards, at 17, being joined at the back by a lower back member 18. A cross-member 19 extending across the frame, a short distance up from -the bottom, carries a bag support member 20, of sinuous form. A rear frame 21 extends from the top frame 12 to meet a lower frame 22, the rear frame continuing down to provide a further bag support structure at 23. ~-~
In the example of Figures 1 and 2, the rear frame 21 has its two upper sections 24 inclined upwardly and outwardly. The purpose of this structure will be explained later.
In use a bag is inserted into the holder, the upper ~ -~
edge of the bag wrapping over the top frame 12. The bottom of the bag is supported by 20 and 23.
A lid 25 is pivotally supported, as by a rod 26 ~-extending through brackets 27. In Figure 1 the lid is shown in a closed position resting on the top of the holder. In Figure 2 the lid is shown pivotally over with the holder moved out of a position where material :~

can be put in the bag in the holder.
Figure 3 illustrates the condition, as in Figure 1, with the lid closed on the holder. Figure 4 illustrates the condition, as in Figure 2, with the holder pivoted out to an access position and the lid pivoted down. The holder is swung down, as indicated by the arrow B. The lid will be pivoted so that the inside will be facing towards the holder. As the holder is swung towards the closed position, first the secti~n 16 (b) will push 0 against the inside of the lid with the lower part, in the open position, being pushed back and up as the lid pivots on the rod 26. Contact between the top frame 12 and the lid will move round the corner between section 16 (b) and the front edge 13, until in the fully closed position the front edge 13 is against the front edge 28 of the lid.
One way of mounting the holder on a door is by a plate secured, as by welding, to the rear frame 21, -~
screws passing through holes in the plate into the door. - -~
. . ~ .
However such an arrangement is a semi-permanent mounting and does not readily provide for easy removal of the holder for cleaning. A particularly convenient way of mounting the holder is illustrated in Figures 5, 6 and 7. A mounting member 30 is attached to the door and has -a central large rib 31 and a flange 32 at each side.
The flanges curve forward from a back part 33, then curve round and inward slightly to form grooves 34. The central rib curves forward from the back part 33 and defines narrow slots 35 between the central rib and the -~
edges 36 at the flanges 32. As will be seen in Figure 5, the flanges, 32 are inclined, upwardly and outwardly, at a small angle. This angle approximates to the angle of inclination of the upper sections 24 and the rear -~-frame 21.
In use, the holder is held so that the sections 24 ~ ~

: ~':

~' ~: . ' " ' ' . :: . ' i``''`"' : " ~: ., ' ' ' : , ' ' 2 ~ 2 3 ~ 1 1 can pass through the slots 35. The holder is then moved downwards and the sections 24 engage in the grooves 34.
To remove the holder it is first lifted up to release the sections 24, and then pulled forward.
A tie holder 40 can be positioned in the top of the central rib 31. It has a main body 41 shaped to fit in the central hollow 42 of the rib 31 and has a laterally extending rib 43 at each side at the top. Ribs 43 prevent the tie holder from falling through and the lo central rib, and also assist in removing the tie holder.
A bundle of wire ties, as normally provided with the plastic bag liners for the holder, can put in the tie holding member.
