Abstract
INTERIOR HANDLE FOR DRAWERS
Abstract of the Disclosure An interior handle for a drawer front end or cover that has fingernail preserving characteristics, and that is in the form of a handle member secured to the drawer at the top of the drawer front, which handle member is of hollow cy-lindric configuration and is open at the front of the drawer, but defines an overhanging wall over the handle opening, and..
an interior surfacing within same, with the interior space defined by the handle interior surfacing being proportioned to readily receive, for drawer movement actuation purposes, a finger of the person desiring to, for instance, pull the drawer for access to the interior of same, free of the finger-nail involved engaging such handle interior surfacing; such handle does not project forwardly of the drawer front but does project rearwardly of the drawer front into the interior of the drawer to provide such interior space proportioning.

Description
INTERIOR HANDLE FOR DRAWERS
Specification:
The invention rel~tes to an interior drawer handle on the cover of a drawer.
Interior handles for drawers have been known provided so as not to project from the piece of furniture to which they are applied, thnt i8 in particular not to project beyond the front face of a cover of the drawer. It is therefore common to form interior handles within - ~
the material thickness of the cover. The disadvanta~e, however, is ~ ;
that the drawer having such interior handle cannot always satisfactori~
ly be handled by all persons, becau`~e long fingernails, in particular, might stri~e against the face opposite the outer open fiide of the handle in the cover and thus might be damaged. Persons having long fingernails consequently will grip the interior handle relatively near the front edge, or the outside, re~pectively, thus increasin~ the ~anger of a ;~
slipping-off of the fingers and hence damage of the fingernail~
Tho state of the art also includes the arran~ement of a handle on top of the cover of the drawer by which however the above shown disadvant-a~es of the prior ~rt interior handles are not eliminated. ~-It is therefore the aim of the ~resent invention to so further de~elop an interior drawer handle of the kind referred to in the begin-nin~ that the drawer having such drawer handle can better be handled, which in particular reduces the dan~er of a damage to fingernails significantly.
In accordance with the solution of the invention, this problem is solved for an interior drawer handle on a cover of a drawer in that the drawer handle provided on the top of the cover i8 shaped as an approxi-mately cylicdric hollow body open to the front a~d to the bottom extend~

in~ inwardly be-rond the cover into the free interior of the drawer. -Therefrom it results that the clear depth of the approximately hollow body forMing the drawer handle, is larger than the material thic~ness of the cover.
In detail, the clear depth of the approximately cylindric hollow body may, in accordance w~th claim 2, be about 40 mm, i.e. may sub-~ ~.. ~.: :,: :

The interior drawer handle is furtheron suitably so shaped that `~
the approximately cylindric hollow body is open to the front and to the bottom over about one quarter of its ~eriphery. - Through this opening, with the shape of the drawer handle remaining as described above, the fin~er tips may be inserted without striking against any-1,:' . -thin6-In accordance with claim 4, it is not necessary that the shape of ~ ~

2~1977 handle is also possible, accordin~ to cl~im 5, my means of a paralle-1epiped the edges of which are rounded orf.
In a particularl~ suitable further development of th~ interior --drawer handle with the cover of the drawer to which it is fiecured, the ùpper side of the cover includes, according to claim 6, an outer -~
rounding off, whereby the curvature of this rounding off is ~pproxi-mately inversely equal to a curvature of the approximately cylindric hollow body of which the drawer handle consists. The curvature at the upper side of the cover and the curvature in the interior drawer handle at the same time continuously blend into each other so that the hand of the user may easily glide into the handle.
Accordin~ to claim 7, the ends of the approximately cylindric hollow body of which the drawer handle con6ists, too, are preferably rounded off at the outside. - Thereby, easy manipulation of the drawer handle and the esthetically attractive ex~ression of the handle is further pro~oted.
In the following, two exemplified embodiments of the invention -will be explained based on a drawing including five figures.

on a sectionally-shown drawer viewed from top;
Figure 2 shows the ~rawer handle to~ether with the cover accord-ing to Figure 1 in cross section;
Figure 3 is a front view on the cover of the drawer including the interior drawer handle according to Fi~ure 2, as a sectional view;
Fi~ure 4 show6 a second emhodiment of the interior drawer handle including the cover, as a cros6 section, and -~
Figure 5 shows a front view on the cover of the drawer including _ 4 -the interior drawer handle according to Figure 4, again a6 a sectional ~iew Fi~ure 1 on one side, and Figures 2 throu~,h 5, on the other, show the drawer handle in different scales. In the figure6, identical ele~
ments are given identlcal reference numerals.
In Figure 1, 1 generally desi~nates a portion of a drawer provided on the front with a cover 2. The cover is provided at the upper side and at the lower siàe with roundings-off 3 and 4 outwardly directed as ;; ; ;~
shown.
~ .: . , ~ . - :-~ n interior drawer handle 5 is provided at the upper side 6 ofthe cover, that is it is screwed adjoinin~ly to the inner face 7, com-pare Figure 2.
A~q can particularly be taken from Figure 2, the drawer handle, with the exception of a flat flan~e 8 provided for the attachment thereo~, co~pri~ses an approximately cylindric body 9 which,~at a forward and bottom area 10 is open to the outqide. ~his area extends, in this case, over about one quarter of the assumed complete cylinder periphery.
It i~ es~ential that the drawer handle extend, with a rear 6ection beyondlthe interior face 7 of cover 2 into the interior of the!clear space of the drawer, hhich is not provided with a reference numeral but which i8 clearly visible from Figure 1.
With a view to the whole shaping of the drawer handle 5, a hand with fingertips, fingertip 12 i9 fihown, can so grip into the drawer handle that the fingers in area 1~ rest relatively far inside the drawer handle without provoking necessary touching of the inner side thereof, for instance by fingernail 14, even if this fingernail is relatively long. `~

Thanks to upper roun~in~-off 3 of the cover which goe6 over into the opposite roun~ing off, inside, into the approximately cylinlric body 9, the fingertips when gripping the drawer can easily glide into the inner ~pace, not designated, of the drawer handle formed by the approximately cylin~'ric body.
The esthetically attractive and easy-to-use shape of the drawer handle is cGmpleted by roun~lings-off at the side ends, of which one rounding-off 11 is shown in Figures 1 and 3.
In Figures 4 and 5, a second embodiment of the drawer handle is shown having the reference numeral 15. The interior drawer handle again i9 secured to cover 2. - The interior drawer handle 15 differs from the firqt embodiment, i.e. drawer handle 5, by a flattening 16 at its si~e facin~ the clear space of the drawer. The flattening proceeds in pArticular in ~arallel to tne inner face 7 of cover 2. In the area of two transitions 17, 18, of which transition 17 can also be seen in Figure 5 within the drawer handle, the flattening 16 goes over into the portion of the drawer handle which for the rest is cylindric. From ;-Figure 4, it can also be taken that also in case of the flattening 16, the drawer handle can reliably be gri~ped from the inside while suffi~
ciently free space for longer fingernails 14 will be available.
