Abstract
ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE SUPPORT AND
DISPLACEMENT OF A PERSON ON A BASE
Abstract An arrangement for the support and displacement of a person in, for example, a recumbent position on a base, comprising a sleeve-shaped laminated carpet (10). The carpet has a certain thickness for softening the support of the person who is placed on the arrangement and has minimal frictional resistance along internal surfaces of the carpet impacting against each other. The carpet is in a folded together condition with the person supported on the latter, adapted to be subjected to a rolling movement externally relative to the base and internally relative to an opposite inner surface, A separate cover (11) which is made either of disposable material or of easily cleanable, preferably autoclavable, but fluid-tight cloth material, surrounds relatively tightly the sleeve-shaped carpet (10) and is adapted to be carried along by the carpet in its rolling movement.
Only an internal smooth cloth layer of the carpet is fluid-tight while an external cloth layer and an intermediate layer of hollow fibre material or another filling material, are readily permeable to fluid.

In addi~ion, -there ls need for a solution which ls easy to clean (sterllise) ~fter use, that ls to say Eir~tly to remove fl~id, dlr~ and the like by a washlng process ~o~ether wi~h removing humidity, w~lich m~t have penetra~ed into the interior of the carpet, in a s~sequent ~ryln~
proce~s. Hi~her~o, it has not been po3~ible to ~atisfy the practical needs ln a ~lmple and effective m~nner.
An objec~ of ~he present inventlon is an arran~emen~ which can ~e used ln a ~imple and effec-tlve manner in a hospital enviromnent (cperation room, w~rd, and the llke) as well as in a street milleu (a~cident location) or for handlin~ co~p~es ~2~7~ ~
or for use at other job locations of current interest and, in turn and order, at different job locations, without having to subject the whole arrangement to a thorough cleaning (autoclaving~.
Accordingly, the present invention resides in an arrangement for the support and displacement of a person on a base and which comprises a laminated carpet in the form of a flat collapsed open-ended tube for softening the support of said person with its internally impacting surfaces exhibiting minimal frictional resistance and said carpet with said person thereon being adapted to be subjected to a rolling movement externally relative to said base and internally relative to an opposing inner surface, and a replaceable cover enclosing said flat tube relatively tightly enabling said cover to accompany said rolling movement of said tube.
By usiny a separate cover formed, for example, of cloth, outside a sleeve-shaped carpet, several advantages are obtained. A most essential advantage consists in being able to avoid cleaning (autoclaving) of the sleeve-shaped carpet itself between each job. In other words, after a first job, the carpet will be able to be made ready in an easy and rapid manner for a new job, by quite simply drawing the carpet out of the soil cover and inserting it in a new (sterile) cover for a new application. By this, one avoids an otherwise cumbersome, labour-demanding and time-demanding rough cleaning and subsequent recleaning with associated autoclaving and drying of the carpet. This involves, in turn, that after each job, one only needs to clean the relatively thin-walled, cloth-formed cover, instead of having to clean the whole of the thick-walled sleeve-shaped carpet.
There is also a possibility of selecting a cover with special properties for each individual use. In certain instances, it can be of the greatest signifi-.~
cance that the cOver is fluid-tight (and bacteria-tight) and, ln other inStAnC~S, that lt is par~i-cularly sta~le to heat or will exhibit otller precise charac~eristics in order ~o ~e u~ilised in a street S envlronment or in othcr job locatlons oE interest.
In othex further ins~ances, i~ is of considerable import~nc~ that the cover is easy to clean and ea~y to autoclave. If necessary, se~eral such charac-~eristlc~ can ~e combined in one and the same clo-th m~erial 50 that the cover can be employed in a street en~lron~ent ~qu~lly well as in hospltal surrourldin~.
I~ is also convenient to use covers made of a material designed for disposal af~er use, for example, "non-wov~n" mat~rlAl, pap~r flbre~ ispos lS plas~ics or other suitable n~aterial.
In practi~e, one C~lll manage with a single ~leeve-~hAp~t carpet tocJ~ther w:lth a 3upply of replacea~le covers where, u~ually, only ~he cover is su~jected to cleaning (autoclaviny) after use, ~0 while the carp~t 1~ only sporadically 3ubjected to a clea~ for conventional maintenance.
In one embod~ment of the invention, lt ls po~si~le to protect the carpet in the covqr in a read~ and simpl~ manner du~ to the cover havln~ a lar~er sleeve length ~ilan the ~leeve length of ~he c~rpet in order, therehy, ~o be ~ble to project a di~tanc~ free-endingly outslde end edges of the carpet so as to protect the~e aga:Lnst d:Lrt and the like.

Re~errin~ to Fl~. 1, a sle~ve-shaped carpet 10, ~0 having a design corresponding qenerally to the carpet as lllustr~ted in U~S. Pa~en~ Specification 4,051,S65, is shown indloating at A a person who, by means of ~llis carpet, i~ di~p}aced laterally from the position shown in full lines ~o tha~ show~ in broken llnes.

a sleeve-shaped cover 11 o~ cloth~ormea materi~l which ~lts closely disposed and relatively ti~htly to ~he ou~er sur~ace of the ~arpet 10.
The arran~ement can be designed with variou~
3Q len~hs all accordlng to the purpose of use. In a first embodlment ~Fig~ 2) where ~ patient is to be displaced ln a recum~en~ posi~io~ on a ba~e/ there can be employ~d, for example, a slee~e-shaped carpe~ 10 havlnc~ a sleeve breadth of a~out 0 5 m and ilavin~ a sleeve l~nyth o~ 2 m to~ther with a cover 11 h~ing ~ sleeve lencJth of 2~4 - 2~5 m~ In a second en~odiment (Fiy. 3) whexe a patient i~ to ~74L ~
be displaced in a si~tin~ or stanflincJ condltion on a base, there can be employed, for example, A sleev~-shaped ~arpet lOa o~ essentially quadratic form, that is to say havlng ~ sleeve breadth of a~out 0,5 m and llavln~ a sleev~ l~ngth of a~ou~ 0,5 m. In the las~-mentioned instance, the cover lla can have a sleeve length of Erom about ~,5 n~ to about 0.9 m. Such an arrangsment of ~uadratic desl~n can be employe~ for lateral a~ well as for longltudinal displacemen~ of a patien~ o~ a base. In addition, the arrangement can also be employed for ~urning the patlent 90 on the b~e.
The cover ll ~lla) ls designed ~o be ~rawn on o~ dr~wn o~ ~he c~rpet lO ~lOa) in an es~ecially slmple and ready manner and can, in ~ ~onv~ntional col-struction, corl3i~t of an open-ending sleeve.
Provision 1~ made fo~ the cover 11 (lla) to p~o~ t, for ex~mple, 20~25 cm ou~side each of the end ~laes Gf ~he carpet lO (lOa) so that end edc~es of the carpet axe protected against lateri~l intrusio~ of dlrt and m~isture. Alternatlvely, the ~over can be provlded with a flrst closed end and a second clos~
a~le end, ~or exAmple~ an end which ça~ be closed o~f with a catch or ~rip loçk or another 3uita~1e ~5 lockincf device.
The cover is made of plia~le, ea~ily handleabl~
and fluid- and ba~te~ia-tight clot~ material. An especlally s~ita~le ~lo~h material for the purpose can consist of a ~odern, comf~r~able material which is employ~d, for example, as rainwear ma~eri~l. Thls ~aterial i5 boilable, fluid-tiyht (and ba~teria-tigh~), sof~ and relatlvaly we~r-resis~ant and ea~y to h~ndl~.
Th~ use can also be considexed oE coar~e, plastic-coated tarpaulin materi~l, especially ~or use in a street ~nvlronment where ~ig de~and~ are placed on resistan~e to weax an~ ablll~y to withstand strains ~om a rel~tiYely rou~ nd uneven ~se. ~pplica~ion ~z~
can also be considered, especially for use in Op~ratiQn ward~ and in simllar environment~, of cloth ma~erial of ~he "Gortex" type which is formed of a lamin~te of finely woven Teflon fibres. There can be employed, S moreover, for one ~nd the same sleeve-shaped carpet, dlfferent types of cover all accordin~ to the object of appli~A~ion and, if desired, one and the same carpet can be applied, in turn and order, a~ different use locations and, if desixed, wi~h different covers at e~ch use location, without one having ~o clean the carpet each time on ~uch subsequent~ use. It can be especi~lly appropriate to apply covers in the f~rm of dispo~able materlal, that ls to say materlal which, if desired, ~an ~e thrown away after havincJ ~een used once.
'rhe cove~ can, lf desired, be made of especially strony ma~rl.al and c~n, ~o~ exa.~ple, havo ~ewecl on suppq~ nd~ in ~lle ~orm o~ nooses or loop~, ~or example, at knee height and shoulder heicsht so that the arranc3ement with one person re~ting on the latter can be r~ised and ~ranspor~ed ~y four persons vla such support hancls. For example, a surroundincs suppc)r~
band can be sewed permanentl~ tc-) the cover in a fastening region at ~a~h 20 cm o~ the periphery o~
~5 the cover.
Such arrangementS find particular application in conn~ctlon with a~bulance se~vices and ~i~hin ~he hospltal environment and nur~lny home~. Th~y a~
$pe~ially advanta~eou~ within yerlat.~cs ~nd ~sp~cially in ~onnection with the daily attendance of incon~inent patientS.The~e arr~ngement~ can al~o be considered for use on ~ire-lnjured patient3 ~n~ on pati~n~s who, for other reasons, must be trea-ted with partlcular care and ge.ntleness in recumbent positions..Furthermore, ~hey ~ind application, for example, ln the transEer oE movement-h~mpered and/or slck persons fro~ bed to bathincJ lift ~nd with wet body back from the bathing li~t to the ~ed, WitilO~t thereby wetting or dirtying the sleeve-shaped e~rpet.
l'he work is consider~bly simplifled by only having to change tlle cover between eaGh appllca~lon of the ~rrangement, As shown ln ~lg. ~, there is employed a sleeve-shaped carpet of a speclal desl~n whlch is made posslble by use of a covar as descrlbed a~ove. The ~leeve-shaped carpet is ~ade, in a manner known se, of an oute~ layer of cloth material 13 and an ~nner layer 14 of cloth ma~erlal to~ether Wit}l an lntermedlate layer 15 ~hich gives the carpet suffi cient volume and th~ elasticity to conform to possible irregularitie~ in the ba~e. The lnner layer 1~ .i.s of ~ construc~ion correspondinY to that de-~cribe~ ln U.S. Pat~nt Sp~cification 4,051~565, ~hat is to say cOhSiSting of a smooth (little friction resistance~ an~ ~lui~-tlght eloth material. ~or example, the clo~h ~atexial 14 can con~lst of nylon-~lllco~l, elastome~ material. The outer layer 13, ont~e othe~ l~and,l~ made of autoclavabl~ cotton ma~erial of a ~uali~y correspo~din~ to that which is used in conv~ntional operation clothe5. The filling material layer lS is m~de o~ ~lame-proo~, boila~le material consisting of polyester fibres (hollow fibres), whi~h ha~ low absorptlon ability but is correspondin~ly easy to dry af~e~ autoclavin~. The hollow fibres extend in the thiekness of the ca~pet and are preferably ~onnected endways with the o~ter layer and the inn~r layer o~ th~ ~arpet respecti~eiy.
By means of the o~ter cover, the carpet ~n be xpared of dirt ~nd mois~u~e under di~ferent ~ondltions of use and nevertheless ~he c~rpe~, when it is to be cleaned, can be autoclav~d ~nd dried in a rapid and 3S simple mannPr. At the sa~ time, the c~rpet can exhibit the desired p.ropertle~ for cllsplacement o~ a per~on on the arrangement r~latlve to the base in a gentle and simple manner,
