Abstract
LOTION APPLICATOR
ABSTRACT
A lotion applicator has an outer centrally open ring, with a lip extending inwardly from substantially the entire lower periphery of the outer ring. An inner lock-ing member is insertable through an upper periphery of the outer ring, to snugly mate with the outer ring and retain the absorbent pad therebetween, while being blocked from movement through the lower periphery of the outer ring, by the lip thereof. Such a construction avoids use of adhe-sives to attach the pad to the remainder of the applica-tor, which adhesive may be dissolved or weakened by lotion. As well, such construction allows the pad to be readily changed, particularly when different users are using the same applicator.

LOTION ~PPLICATOR
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to an applicator, whlch can be used by an individual to apply lotion to his body.
DESCRIPTION OF PRIOR ART
The task of applying lotion such as suntan lotion to an individual's body, can often be messy and difficult.
If an individual is alone, it is difficult for him to ade-quately apply lotion to his back in particular. Further-more, the lotion is often oil based, and if applied by hand, will result in oily or greasy hands. This is parti-cularly inconvenient at locations such as on a beach, where water and soap required to wash off -the lo-tion from the hands, are not immediately and conveniently available.
It would of course be possible to attach an absorhent pad, for example a sponge to a handle, and apply the lotion indirectly to the body, by first applying it to the j sponge. This would overcome the messiness associated with applying lotion by hand, and as well allow an individual to more readily reach the difficult to apply areas of the body, such as the back in particular. Howe-ver, the sponge would have to be attached to the handle by some particular means. Such attachment is not conveniently accomplished by glueing the sponge to a handle, such as a plastic handle, since many common glues or adhesives, tend to be dissolved or wealcened over time by the lotion, so that the sponge eventually detaches from the handle. In addition, some of the lotion would remain in -the sponge after use, and would not be removable except by extensive washing with soap and water, which would normally not be don`e by a user of such an applicator when soap and water are not easily available. Thus, if the same or a second indivi-dual wished to use the applicator and wished only to use a different lotion, he could not conveniently do so without also getting at least a portion of the lotion remainlng in the sponge from previous use, on his body.
I-t would be desirable then, -to have a lotion applicator which includes an absorbent pad such as a sponge, and an elongated handle, the sponge being firmly removably affixed to the handle by some means which is not affected by the lotion, and which fairly readily permits changing of the sponge.
SUMMARY OF E INVENTION
10The present invention provides a lotion applica-tor which has an outer, centrally open ring. The ring has a side wall extending between a lower and an upper peri-phery thereof, and a lip extending inwardly from substan-tially the entire lower periphery of the ring. An inner locking member has a side wall of geometrially similar dimensions as the side wall of the outer ring. That is, of the same shape. Furthermore, the inner locking member is inser-table through -the upper periphery of the outer ring to snugly mate with the outer ring, while being blocked from movement through the lower periphery of the outer ring, by the lip thereof. An absorbent pad with an outer periphery of dimensions at least equal to those of an i.nner surface of the side wall of the outer ring, is also provided. Such pad is releasably retainable between respective lower ends of the inner locking member and the outer ring when snugly mating with one another. A tab and slot locking mechanism has a tab and mating slot disposed on respective slde walls of the outer ring and the inner : locking member. By such an arrangement, the inner locking member can be firmly and releasably locked to the outer ring, when these are snugly mating with the pad retained between them. An elongated handle extends in a radially outward direction from one of the ring and locking member.
::
35Preferably, the ring and locking member are circular. In addition, the slot of the locking mechanism is preferably a circular slot which extends around the entire side wall of the locking member and the ring. A
particular construction of the locking mechanism includes 40a plurallty of coplanar tabs, which can all simultaneously mate with the circular slot. In a preferred construction, the handle extends from an outer side of the side wall of the outer ring.

Embodiments of the invention will now be des-cribed with reference to the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of a lotion applicator of the presen-t invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the lotion applicator of Figure 1, showing it assembled;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the assembled lotion applicator of Figure 2;
E'igure 4 is a side eleva-tion thereof; and Figure 5 is a bottom plan view thereof.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF AN E~BODIMENT OF THE INVENTION
Referring to the drawings, in particular Figure ; 1, the applicator shown consists of a centrally open, outer circular ring 2, ha~ing a side wall 4 extending between an upper periphery 6 of the ou-ter ring 2, and a ; lower periphery 8 thereof. Side wall 4 has an inner side 5. A circular inner locking member 12 has a side wall 14, and is dimensioned to be insertable through the upper periphery 6 of outer ring 2, to snugly mate with outer ring 2. Locking member 12 is blocked from movement -through lower periphery 8 of outer ring 2, by a lip 10 thereof, which ex-tends inwardly from the entire lower periphery 8. An absorbent pad 16 in the form of a foam pad or sponge is also provided, and is circular in shape with an outer perlphery 17 (the circumference in this case), of dimensions equal to those of the inner surface 5 of side wall 4. By such an arrangement, pad 16 can be releasably retained between respective lower ends of inner locking member 12 and outer ring 2, when snugly mated with one another as shown in Figures 2-5.
B
1~7~
A tab and slot locking mechanism is also provided which consists of a plurality of coplanar, inwardly exten-ding tabs 20 disposed on innner side 5 of side wall 4.
The locking mechanism also consists of a mating circular slot or groove 18 disposed on side wall 14 of inner locking member 12. By this arrangement, the locking mechanism will firmly and releasably lock inner locking member 12 to outer ring 2 when the foregoing are snugly mating with pad 16 retained therebetween, again as shown in Figures 2-5. An elongated handle 22 extends in a radially outward direction from outer ring 2.
The entire applicator as described above, except for pad 16, can be conveniently molded from plastic. To use the device, it will be appreciated that inner locking member 12, pad 16, and outer ring 4, must first be aligned in order to assemble them. Inner locking member 12 can then be inserted through upper periphery 6 of outer ring 4, with pad 16 therebeneath, until tabs 20 become engaged in circular slot 18. When this has occurred, pad 16 will be releasably retained between the lower ends of inner locking member 12 and outer ring 4, in particular between the lower surface of the former, and lip 10 of the latter.
Thus, no adhesives are required to retain pad 16 in posi-tion on the device, which adhesive may be dissolved orweakened by lotions. The desired lotion is then simply applied from a container to pad 16, and handle 22 used to rub lotion containing pad 16 on the user's body. When it is desired to replace or change pad 16, for example if another individual wishes to use a different lo-tion and avoid getting the previous user's lotion on his body, one simply pushes upward on pad 16, in order to exert an up-ward force on inner locking member 12. When sufficient upper force is exerted as described, tabs 20 will dis-engage from circular slot 18, and inner locking member 12will then pop upwardly through upper periphery 6 of outer ring 4, to allow removal of pad 16. A new or alternate .~
pad can then be inserted in place of pad 16, and the applicator assembled to releasably retain the new or alternate pad in posi-tion on the applicator, in a manner already described.
s It would of course be possible to make outer ring 4, and inner locking member 12, of different shapes than circular. However, a circular shape is a particularly convenient one. The requirement with regard to the shape of the foregoing elements, is that they must mate with each other, so that the pad can be retained therebetween.
As will be apparent to those skilled in the art in light of the foregoing disclosure, many alterations and modifications are possible in -the practice of this inven-tion without departing from the spirit or scope thereof.
Accordingly, the scope of the invention is to be cons-trued in accordance with -the substance defined by the following claims.
