Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
There is disclosed a deep side banding knife which is capable of withstanding severe rock conditions and which is de-signed to permit dry or liquid fertilizers to be deposited at a depth of one and one half to two and one half inches below and to the side of the seed bed thereby permitting farmers to deep band fertilize at the same time as another operation is being carried out in the soil. The knife can also be mounted on a hoe drill.
The knife has a mounting bracket for mounting it on an air seeder or heavy duty cultivator or hoe drill and has a fertilizer delivery tube attached to rear edge.

Description

12612~5 , The present invention relates to a device able to withstand severe rock conditions used Eor depositing Eertilizer in a band below and to the side of a seed bed at the same time as another operation is being carried out on the soil.
The device can be easily and conveniently attached to a cultivator without removal of the shovel permitting the farmer to deep band fertilize and prepare the seed bed for seeding, thereby eliminating an extra field operation.
The device can also be mounted on a hoe drill, again permitting the farmer to deep band fertilize and prepare the seed bed for seeding while eliminating an extra field operation.
Two field operations can be eliminated when the device is attached to an air seeder. This aspect of the invention per-mits the farmer to prepare the seed bed, seed and deep band fer-tilize in one operation.
Those skilled in the art will recognize that, although the spreading of fertilizers such as liquid ammonia is a favoured method of fertilization, the spreading of the fertilizer must be carried out in such a way as to prevent evaporation of the ammonia or the burning of the seeds.
The prior art discloses devices which enable fertilizer to be distributed to the side of seeds (Canadian Patent 1,106,239) or below the seed bed (Canadian Patents 638,550; ~58,866).
The present invention is an improvement over the prior .1':..

art in that the blade of the deep side banding knife cuts a band below and to the side of the seed bed, into which band liquid or any fertilizer is deposited.
The fertilizer can thus be distributed at the location which permits its best use, thereby avoiding evaporation in the case of liquid fertilizers and preventing the burning of the seeds.
According to the invention there is provided a fertilizer knife for use with an agricultural implemement, such as an air seeder, a cultivator or a hoe drill, comprising a blade having a cutting edge which, in use, is adapted to make an acute angle with the seed bed, the top of the cutting edge being ahead of the bottom thereof, said blade having a trailing edge and at least one fertilizer delivery conduit; securement means at the top of the blade for attaching the blade to the agricultural i~plement so that when the said knife is attached to the agricultural implement, fertilizer may be deposited in a band at a depth of 1~ to 2~ inches below and to the side of the seed bed, at the same time that another operation is being carried out on the soil.
Embodiments of the present invention will be ~urther illustrated with reference to the accompanying figures, w~erein like numerals refer to like features.
Figure 1 is a side view of a deep side banding knife mounted on a cultivator shank.
Figure 2 is a side view of the deep side banding knife attached to an air seeder.
Figure 3 is a rear view of the deep side banding knife attached to an air seeder.

:~2~ 2~5 Figure 4 is a side view of the deep side banding knife mounted to a hoe drill.
The deep side banding kniEe is indicated generally by 1.
It is composed of a blade 2 which is wedge shaped, having edges 3 and 4. The blade has a straight-edge bottom 5. A fertilizer tube 7 is securely mounted to the blade 2 of the banding knife along the edge 4 of the blade using conventional means such as welding.
As shown in Figure 1, the deep side banding knife 1 can be mounted on a cultivator shank 8 by bolts 9 which also secure the deep side banding knife to the shovel 10. The bolts 9 extend through the shovel 10 and shank 8 and a mounting bracket 6 at the top of the blade and are secured by nuts 13.
When the embodiment of the invention shown in Figure 1 is in operation, the shovel 10 moves through the soil, breaking up the soil, and prepares the seed bed for seeding, while the knife is cutting a band some 1l to 2l inches below and to the side of the seed bed 12l Liquid or dry fertiliæer is deposited from the fertilizer tube 7.
Depending upon the implement or machine to which the deep side banding knife is attached, the Porward edge 3 of the blade 2 forms an angle of between 43 and 50 with the seed bed 12. If the angle is too steep, the blade 2 will not be able to move efPiciently through the soil and will tend~to jump out oE the soil. Where the angle is too sharp, the soil will tend to clog the cultivator and fertilizer tube.
Figures 2 and 3 illustrate the deep side banding knife 1 attached to an air seeder 16.

In operation of the embodiment of Figures 2 and 3, seed is deposited in the furrow created by movement of the shovel 10 through the soil. As the blade 2 and fertilizer tube 7 are located to the side of the air seeder 15 (as shown in Figure 3), fertilizer is deposited 1l to 2l inches below and to the side of the seed bed 12, thus reducing the possibility of the seeds being burned by the fertilizer.
The kniEe can also be mounted on a hoe drill, such as a Versatile Noble(*TM) hoe drill 16 as shown in Figure 4 and will enable fertilizer to be deposited one and one half to two and one half inches below and to the side of the seed bed, while the seed bed is being prepared.
At least two types of fertilizer tube 7 may be mounted to the blade 2. A narrow tube as shown in Figures 1 and 3 is best adapted for the delivery of liquid fertilizers, such as ammonia, into the soil. A wider tube as shown in Figure 4 is best suited for depositing dry or anhydrous fertilizer into the soil.
Where desired, two narrow tubes can be mounted one on top of the other on the blade, or a narrow tube can be mounted on top of a wide tube, thereby ~ermitting the farmer to selectively fertilize by using one or two different fertilizers.
The blade 2 is constructed using three inch by three eighths inch mild steel.
~ n another embodiment of the invention, the blade 2 has a high chrome tip (14).
