FIGURE 11 is a perspective view of a package formed fro~ the blank s~own in FIGVRE 10;
FIGURE 12 is a plan view of a still further blank for forming a twin-tier ~ackage, and FIGl)RES 13 and 1~ are perspective views of a package for,~d from the blank shown in FIGURE 12.
Referring first to FIGURES 1 and 2 of the drawings, FIGURE 1 shows an elongate blank 10 formod fro.~ paper~oard or similar foldable sheet material and whic.S co~prises a top panel 12 to each of the longitudinal edges of which is hinged integral glue strips 14 and 16 along fold lines 18 and 2~, respective-ly. A side panel 22 is hinged to glue strip 14 along fold line 24 and a side panel 26 is hinged to glue strip 16 along fold line 2~.
To form the completed package illustrated in FIGURE 2 of the drawings, the blank is applied to a group of containors 'C', which, as in this case, may each be connected to an adjacent container by its flange ~f~, so that the top p3nel 12 lies on the tops of the containers in the group. The glue strips 14 and i6 are then broug.~t into abut~ent with and secured to (as by gluing) the underfaces of the flanges 'f~ of the containers in each of the rows R',R2 by folding the bla~k along fold lines 18,24 and 20,28. This folding operation also brings each of the side p3nsls 22 and 26 into abut~ent with the exposed faces of the adjacent containers.
FIGURE 3 is a schematic end view of a single line p3ckage in which like parts of the blank referred to above are design-ated like reference n~morals with the addition of suffix 'a~.
In a modified embodiment, illustrated in FI~URES 4 and S the blank 30 is of similar constrvction to that previously described but has side panels comprising a series of connect-ed flaps. The blank 30 inclu~es a top panel 32 to each of 7n the longitudinal edges of which is hinged integral glue strips 34 and 36 along tear lines 38 an~ 40, respectively. A
composite side panel 42 is hinged to the glue strip 34 a.long fold line 44 and a composite side panel 46 is hingei to glue strip 36 along fold line 48. The side panel 42 co~prises a series of flaps 50-56 connected one to the next along frangi-ble connections 58-62. Similarly, the side panel 46 co~p-rises a series of flaps 64-70 connected ono to tbe next along frangible connections 72-76.
~ 3 The blank is applied to a grovp of containers in similar manner to that described with referen~e to the previo~s embodiment. As shown in FIGURE S the completed p~okage is opened by tearing away the top panel 32 along the tear lines s 38 and 40 whereafter individual containers can be separated one from the other by breakin~ ths common flanged connection of adjacent containers and the frangible c~nnection bew2en adjacent side wall flaps. However, a similar packago having side wall flaps but without a tearaway top panel is envisaged.
In such a construction, the weakened lines 38 and 40 are substituted by continuoJs fold lines similar to fold lines 44 and 48.
A different blank 78 shown in FI~URE 6 of the drawings is suitable for use with the two tier package shown in FIGURE 7.
Blank 78 comprises a top panel 8û to each of the longitudinal edges of which is hinged upper side panels 82 and 84 alo~g fold lines 86 and 88 respectively. Glue strips 9V an~ 32 are hinged to outermost edges of respective ones of the upper 2û side panels along fold lines 94, 96 and lower side walls 98, 1ûO are hinged to respecti Ye ones of the glue strips 90 and 92 along fold lines 102,104. The bl nk is applie~ to the two tier group of containers so that the top panel 80 aver-lies the tops of the cantain~rs in the upper tier t~. The glue strips are then secured as previously described, to the underside of the container flanges in the lowermost tier t 2.
Thus, the upper side w311s flank the sides of the containers in the upper tier and the lower side walls flank th~ sid~s of the containers in the lower tiex whereby the containers of 3û the two tiers are held together with the containers in the upper tier seated in registry with the containers in the lower tier.
The blank 78a in FIGURE ~ of the drawings .is similar to that described with reference to FIGURE ~ and like parts are designated like reference numerals with the addition Of sufPix 'a'. In this modified arrangement each Qf the upper side panels 82a and ~4a is provided with a tear away strip 106, il 25~L~23 108 defined by tear lines 110,112;114,176 respectively. The tear lines 112 and 116 have boen subtitute~ for the fold lines 94 and 96 of the previous emSodiment. It will be appreciated that the tear strips 106 and 108 faeilitate opening the packago as best see.7 in 'IGVR~ 9.
A further modified blank suitable for forming 3 two-tier package is shown in FIGVRE 10 which also is similar to the blank illustrated in FIGURE 6 and in which like parts are designated like reference nu~erals with the ad~ition of suffix 'b'. In this modification the fold lines 86,88 of the FI~URE 8 embodiment are replaced by additional glue strips 118 and 120 defined by fold lines 86b,122 and 8~b,124 respec-tively. These additio~al glue strips are secured to the undersides of the flanges in the u~pirm~st tier t'b of the containers as s~own in FI~VR~ 11.
Referring now to FIGURES 12 and 14 of the drawings, FIGU~E 12 shows a blank 78c which is similar to that illustrated in 2û FIGURE 6 but is m~ified to include eo~ panels a~ in which like parts are designated like reference nu~ rals with the addition of suffix 'c'. En~ panels 126 and 128 are hinged to the opposite ends of the top panel BOc along fold lines 130,132, respectively. End panel 126 includes a glue strip 134 defined by fold lines 136,13~ and en~ panel 12~ includes 3 glve strip 140 defined by fold lines 142 and 144. Jhe glue strips 90c,92c;134,140 are secured as previously described in earlier embodiments to the un~ersides of the flanges of the containers in th~ lower tier t 2C, so t~at upper side panels 82c,84c flank the exposed sides of the containers in the upper tier and the end panels ~lank t~e exposed sides of the endmost containers in the upper tier.
Whereas the embodimonts described herein refer to gluing of the 'glue strips' to the flanges of the co~tainers in order to form the package, other means of securing the 'glue strips' to the contafners are envisaged. In particular it is envisaged that the blanks may be secured to the container flanges by way of ultra-sonic welding or by laser weldin3.
~253~ 3 In this event the paperboard may be suitably treated at least in the areas of the 'glue strips' so that the requisite weld between the blank and container flanges .is achieved.
