Abstract

ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE
A wear pad for a cutting tool is disclosed. The wear pad is spring loaded by means of belville washers that may be reloaded so that a relatively large force results for any movement of the wear pad. The spring loaded wear pad is used with two conventional fixed wear pads on a tool, for example used in deep boring intersecting holes. The spring loaded wear pad stabilizes the drill when drilling intersecting holes and holes that are disclosed at right angles to one another and also stabilizes the drill when starting new holes.

2 s problem has long existed in connection with drilling holes which intersect. One purpose of the invention is for the stabilizing of the drill for drilling through cross holes at 90. Claims (11)

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
1. A cutting tool for machining holes in workpieces comprising a generally cylindrical body, at least one cutting means on said body, a recess in the outer periphery of said body, a floating wear pad received in said recess, a belville washer disposed in said recess under said floating wear pad and limit means holding said floating wear pad in engagement with said belville washer whereby the radial outward movement of said floating wear pad is limited and said belville washer is preloaded, allowing the floating wear pad to be forced radially inwardly a limited amount by the force of said belville washer.

The tool recited in Claim 1 wherein said limit means supporting said floating wear pad on said belville washer comprises a screw extending through a bore in said floating wear pad and through said belville washer, said screw having a head limiting the movement of said floating wear pad radially outwardly of said body.
3. The tool recited in Claim 2 wherein two said belville washers are supported one at each side of the center of said floating wear pad, said bore has a counterbore, and said screw is a headed screw with head thereof received in said counterbore.
4. The tool recited in Claim 2 wherein at least one fixed wear pad is fixed to said body and circumferentially spaced from said floating wear pad.
5. The tool recited in Claim 5 wherein said recess is an elongated recess, a sub base is attached to said tool by two spaced screws and said floating wear pad is attached to said sub base by a central screw equally spaced from the ends of said wear pad, two belville washers are provided, one under each said screw.
6. The tool recited in Claim 1 wherein two fixed wear pads are fixed to the body and circumferentially spaced from said floating wear pads.
7. The tool recited in Claim 6 wherein said floating wear pad comprises a rectangular sub base and a wear pad part attached to said sub base, counterbored holes in said sub base, headed screws each having a shoulder are disposed in said counterbored holes threadably attaching said floating wear pad to said body.
8. cutting tool comprising a generally cylindrical body having a first end and a second end, drive means on said first end for attaching said tool to a driving member, cutting means on said second end of said body, a floating wear pad means axially spaced from said cutting means, said floating wear pad means comprising, elongated recess in said outer periphery of said body, at least one threaded hole in said body, a threaded shouldered screw extending through said floating wear pad means, a belville washer between said floating wear pad means and said body, said threaded headed screw extending through said belville washer and through said wear pad limiting the outward movement of said floating wear pad from said body and holding said floating wear pad means in engagement with said belville washer whereby said belville washer may be deflected when said floating wear pad means is forced inwardly.
9. The cutting tool recited in Claim 8 wherein at least one fixed pad is fixed to said body and circumferentially spaced in relation to said floating .
