~l`his invention relates to an an-tiskid clevice for tem~orary use Oll the wheels of a vehicle -to increase trac-tion when skidding in snow occurs and ~articulary -to -the crossbar or cleat and to the linkage 7 bo-th of novel design.
The crossbar may be construc~ted of solid s-teel, laminated steel or of ~lastic material and ls a-ttached to the wheel by means of flexible strap~ing to the linkage connected to the crossbar which is held in juxta~osition -to -the -tire -tread. This linkage allows the crossbar to turn u~ to I0 80 degrees whenever skidding occurs due to snow or ice and t~.us provides grea-ter trac-tion automatically, without causing damage to road sur~aces or -to -the tires.~his invention is also suitable for use with steel-belted radial tires. The crossbar element consists of a thin f'lat bar having the corners tha-t are posi-tioned next to the -tire tread, partly tapered. The invention also consists of the linkage which cormects th~ crossbar ¢losely to the flexible s-trapping. The latter is not injurious -to the thin side walls of radial tires w~lile the lir~age remains in place adjacent -to the -thick tire tread.
In the drawings: Fig.L represents a general side view of a vehicle wheel being driven in snow wi-th the antiskid device in place.
Fig. 2 represents -the antiskid device showing the crossbar 6 wi-th tapered edges and connecting linkage 8 joining it to s-trapping 4 and buckle 7~
Fig,3- shows a view of crossbar 6 with parts of the linkage joined to i-t 9.
l~ig. 4 is a cross- sectional end view of crossbar 6 showing -tapered edges I0 and flat or blunt td~ec; I2.~1so shown is a view of' an alternative type of linkage 8.
While I prefer the two types of linkages shown, I do not intend tha-t the inven-tion 'be limited -to -these two desigrl3 as o-ther suitable adap-ta-tions may be made to fulfil the same ~urpose~

Claims (7)
- What is claimed is :
I. An antiskid device for use on a vehicle wheel equipped with a pneumatic tire having a tread, comprising, a rigid or semirigid elongated relatively flat crossbar with at least one bevelled working edge and flexible strapping means joined to the crossbar for supporting it in an operative position on the wheel adjacent the tread. - 2. An antiskid device according to claim I wherein the joint is pivotal linkage connecting the crossbar to the strap means approximately adjacent the side edge of the tread.
- 3. An antiskid device according to claim 2 wherein the crossbar further includes an opposite working edge being bevelled and each said working edges having a flat portion, the pivotal linkage having a strap engaging means permitting a pivotal motion up to 80 degrees.
- 4. An antiskid device according to claims I or 2 wherein the crossbar further includes an opposite working edge having a bevelled portion with both said edges having a flat portion.
- 5. The device according to claims I, 2 or 3 wherein the crossbar extends past the tread sufficient only for the pivotal linkage to join the crossbar and strap means.
- 6. The device according to claims I, 2 or 3 wherein at least a portion of the crossbar is metal.
- 7. The device according to claims I, 2 or 3 wherein at least a portion of the crossbar is plastic.
