Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

A concrete chimney cap is covered by a protecting sheeting which overlies all its normally-exposed surfaces, also including the surface of the cap hole for the paasage of the chimney smoke duct.
The sheeting is used as a mold for fabricating the concrete cap, and this mold remains in position on the cap and adheres thereto.

Description

--' 1210606 fIE~D OE THE IIJJENTION
This invbntion relate~ to chimney caps and, more partlcularly, to a concrete chimney cap provid~d with a protecting ~heeting.
~AC~5lLJei_9L___E INy~
It i~ well known that a chimney cap i~ provided on ths top of chimney masonry to inhibit watsr ingress therewithin. Chimney caps are usually made of concrete and are prone to crack, with the passage of years, because of freezing and de~reezing.
OOJECTS OF THE IN~ENTlON
lD Accordingly, it is a prime ob~ect of the invention to provide an improved concrete chimney cap having a protective wster-proof sheeting.
It i~ another ob~ect Or the invention to provide a concrete chimney cap, thG useful li~e of which is considerably increased~
Another object of the invention is an improved method Or fabricating chimney cape.
Other obJects will become apparent from the detailed description of the drawings.
SU~ARY OF THE INUE~TlON
There is disclosed a concrete chimney cap covsred by a water-proof protecting ~heeSing at all it3 exposed ourraces, including the surrace of the cap hole for receiuing the smoke duct Or the chimney. Prefsrably, the sheeting is used as a mold ror fabricating the concrete cap which remain~ adhered to the inside surrace~ ot the sheeting.
~RIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ORAWINGS
Figure 1 is a perspectiue plan view Or an inuerted cap used as a mould for pouring fresh concrete therein, the concrete being shown in partly cut-away view; and 3n Figuras 2 and 3 are perspective and sectional viuw~ tsken longitudinclly Or a chimney, respectively, and compri~ing the sheeted chimney cap.

`~

OETAILEO DESCRIPTION Of THE DRAWI~GS
In Figure ;~, a chimney 10 ie shown as comprlsing an outer sheath 12, constituted of masonry~ ~uch as layers of bricks 14, and an inner smoke duct 16, both sheath and duct being of ~quare cross-section. The duct 16 is made of a heat-resi~ting material, such as ceramic tiles, and protrudes upwardly thereof.
According to the inventinn, a sheeting forming a shielding member 22 i~ provided to surroundingly engage the cap 20. The member 22 has therefore a similar, yet slightly larger ahape than that of cap 20.
As shown in ~igure 1, the concrete cap 20 i~ con~tructed by pouring fresh concrete within the inverted member 22, which, there-fore, al30 constitutes an open top mould. When the concrete i~ set, a firm bond is obtained between cap 20 and shielding member 22.
Shielding member 22 includes a number of walls, converging toward a central opening of square cross-section; a top wall ormed' by four upwardly-inwardly extending top trapezoidal woll ~-etlon~
24, defining inner small edges 25; peripheral outer eide walls 26, having bottom edges 27; inner side walls 2~, integral with the upper wall sections 24 at edge~ as; and inturned tlange~ 30, intngral with side wall~l 26 at edges 27. 8Otbom flanges 30 extend `rom the edges 27 of side walls 26 towsrd the lower edge o- wall~ 2B, but ~top about half-way through, in order to lesve a gap orl opening 52 Or e width substantially equal to the thickness of ~heath 12, ~o that cap 20 can directly rest on top of sheath 12 with the intermediary of the usual mortar layer 34. _Yet bottom flanges 30 cover the exposed peripheral portion of the underFace of concrete cep 20. All joints between the walls are welded or otherwise sealed.~
The inner side walls 28 extend between the duct 16 and the concrete cap ao to protect the latter against water and ice infiltration caused by failure of the caulking (not shown) normally applied at the joint between edges 25 and duct 16.
Th~ shlelding member 22 protects the conc~ebe cap 20 from _ 3 _ `- 12~ 06 weather elements, and will therefore increase ito uoeful life. The member 22 is preferably con3tituted of a 3uitable paint-covered metal, such as ateel or aluminum. When used as e muuld, as ~hown in Figure 1, gap 32 aervea ao the filling opening for the moĆ¹ld.

Claims (5)

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed, are defined as follows:
1. A chimney cap for use with the exposed upper end portion of a chimney of the type including a central smoke duct protruding upwardly from the top end of a sheath surrounding said duct, said chimney cap comprising a water-proof sheath covering shaped to define a top wall having a central hole, inner side walls depending from said top wall around said hole, said inner side walls and hole adapted to receive the smoke duct, outer side walls depending from said top wall along the entire periphery thereof, and inturned flanges depending from the lower edge of said side walls and terminating short of said inner side walls to leave an opening at the bottom of said covering between said flanges and inner side walls, and concrete filling said covering.
2. A chimney cap as defined in claim 1, wherein said concrete adheres to the entire inside surface of said covering.
3. A chimney cap as claimed in claim 2, wherein said opening has a width substantially equal to the thickness of said sheath.
4. In combination, a chimney comprising a sheath made of masonry and an inner heat-resisting smoke duct upwardly protruding from the top end of said sheath and A chimney cap surrounding said inner duct and resting on the top end of said sheath, said chimney cap comprising a water-proof sheath covering shaped to define a top well having a central hole, inner side walls depending from said top wall around said hole, inner side walls depending from said top wall around said hole, said smoke duct extending in close relationship with said hole and said inner side walls, outer side walls depending from said top wall along the entire periphery thereof and inturned flanges depending from the lower edge of said outer side walls and terminating short of said inner side walls, close to the outer side surface of said sheath, and a core of concrete filling said covering, said concrete core adhering to the inside surface of said covering and having a portion of its bottom surface exposed through said opening and adapted to rest on the top end of said sheath, said covering and concrete core laterally protruding from the side surfaces of said sheath all around said sheath, said protruding portion being covered by said flanges.
5. A method of fabricating a concrete cap for surrounding the top portion of the smoke duct of a chimney, comprising the following steps: shaping a water-proof sheet material to define a covering formed of a top wall having a central hole, inner side walls depending from said top wall around said hole, outer side walls depending from said top wall around the entire periphery thereof and inturned flanges depending from the lower edge of said side walls and terminating short of said inner side walls to leave an opening at the bottom of said covering between said flanges and said inner side walls, inverting the thus-shaped covering, pouring fresh concrete within the interior of said covering, allowing said concrete to cure, thereby forming a chimney cap constituted by a concrete core covered by said covering at all its surfaces adapted to be exposed to weather elements, and including the portion of said core defining a hole for the passage of said smoke duct, said core adhering to the entire inside surface of said covering.
