Abstract:
The invention provides a hair curler and a hair curling method. The curler has a cylindrical core with a hollow portion and a number of through holes. Two rims are treated at the ends of the core, one of which has an opening communicating with the hollow portion of the core. A porous material of high hygroscopicity is located on the core and is provided with a number of through holes. The apparatus includes a cover of length equal to the cylindrical core, the upper portion of which is arch-shaped. The end plates of the cover have slots whose radii are each equal to that of the cylindrical core. Steam is introduced into the hollow portion of the core to soak the porous material. Hair is then curled on the curler and the cover, hummidified in advance, is attached to enclose the hair.
The invention provides a hair curler and a hair curling method. The curler has a cylindrical core with a hollow portion and a number of through holes. Two rims are treated at the ends of the core, one of which has an opening communicating with the hollow portion of the core. A porous material of high hygroscopicity is located on the core and is provided with a number of through holes. The apparatus includes a cover of length equal to the cylindrical core, the upper portion of which is arch-shaped. The end plates of the cover have slots whose radii are each equal to that of the cylindrical core. Steam is introduced into the hollow portion of the core to soak the porous material. Hair is then curled on the curler and the cover, hummidified in advance, is attached to enclose the hair.
Description
10~98 Hair curler and hair curling method The present invention relates to a hair curler and to a method of use thereof.
Hair curling methods in which hair curlers are used with electric heat or chemicals have been widely~employed in the past. In recent years, however, an alternative hair curling method has been developed, e.g. as disclosed in Japanese Patent Publication No. 53-6897. The hair curler and hair curling method disclosed in the aforesaid publication have, however, not been very successful in practice.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a hair curler and a hair curling method which are easy to operate not only for professional use but also for private use and possibly for portable use, by means of improving the known hair curler and hair curling method.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a hair curler assembly comprising: a cylindrical 0~
core having opposed ends, an outer periphery between - said opposed ends, a hollow interior, and at least one hole interconnecting the outer periphery with said hollow interior, wherein one of said opposed ends is closed and the other has an opening interconnecting with said hollow interior to permit steam to be introduced from a suitable source into said hollow interior; a layer of porous ma-terial of high water-retaining ability located on said outer periphery of said core and covering said at least one hole; and a cover for enclosing said layer of porous material and for holding said assembly in place on a user's head when a lock of said user's hair is wound around said layer of porous material and said cover is located thereover.
Preferred embodiments of the invention are described in the following with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring to the drawings, a hair curler and a curl-ing method according to the present invention will be described.
A hair curler l has a hollow portion 2, a cylindrical core 4 having an appropriate number of through holes 3 and rims 5, 5' provided at opposite ends of the cylindrical core 4. The cylindrical core 4 is enclosed by a porous material 6 having high hygroscopicity, i.e. high water-retaining ability. One of rims 5 is provided with an opening 7, at the center thereof, which is connected to the hollow portion 2, and the other rim 5' is of solid construction. A cover 8 is used with the hair curler l, and consists of a generally U-shaped body 9 whose length is equal to that of the cylindrical core 4, and right and left end plates 10 each having a slot ll, at the center thereof, whose radius is e~ual to that of the core cylinder 4O
Both ends of the porous material 6 may be in contact with the rims 5, 5' to fully enclose the core cylinder 4, or may be positioned slightly apart from the rims 5, 5'.
When this hair curler assembly is used, the slots ll of the cover 8 are engaged with the core cylinder 4 ~z~o~
provided inside the rims 5, 51 either directly or via the - porous material 6.
The core cylinder 4 and the rims 5, 5', may be manu-factured separately and assembled together thereafter;
or as shown in Figures 2 and 3, one rim 5 and the core cylinder may be formed integrally and the other rim 5' removably engaged with the o~her end of the core cylinder 4. In either case, the respective parts, preferably made of synthetic resin, can be press fitted and engaged together.
Another embodiment of the present invention, as illustrated in Figure 4, consists of a cylindrical core l which has a hollow portion 2, a closed end, an open end 7 and a number of through holes 3 in a shell thereof; and a hygroscopic material 4 provided on the cylindrical core l. In this embodiment, no rim is provided at either end of the cylindrical core l, because the rims will disturb speedy curling with a lot of curlers. In other words, the lack of rims ensures quick, smooth hair curling.
A steam generator 12 having a first steam outlet 13 and an array of other steam outlets 14 is of arbitrary construction, and is not necessarily limited to the type shown in Figure 5, thus allowing the use of any type of hot-water container. In the hot-water container shown in Figure 5, a hot-water inlet is used as a steam outlet.
The use of the hair curler assembly will be described 10~91~
in the following. The hair curler 1 is located so that - the opening 7 of one rim 5 thereof is placed on the steam outlet 13 of the steam generator 12 while it is generating steam. The cover 8 is placed over the steam outlets 14.
~t this time~ the cover 8 may still be attached to a hair curler 1 as shown in Figure 5. As a result, steam enters the inside of the cylindrical core 4 of the hair curler 1, and then soaks into the enclosing porous material 6 via the through holes 3 of the cylindrical core 4. Accord-ingly, the porous material is impregnated with a large volume of high-temperature hot water. After that, the hair curler 1 is detached from the steam outlet 13 of the steam generator 12, and the cover 8 is removed from the hair curler 1 if any.
Hair 'a' is curled on the porous material 6 provided on the cylindrical core 4 of the hair curler 1 as illus-trated in Figure 6. Immediately after that, the cover 8 is placed over hair 'a~ curled on the curler 1 in such a manner that the slots 11 of both end plates 10 of the cover are engaged with ends of the cylindrical core 4 provided inside the rims 5, 5' at opposite ends of the curler 1. Thereby hair 'a' is sandwiched by the curler 1 and the cover 8 as illustrated in Figure 7.
If the cover 8 is not attached to the curler 1 dur-ing the curling procedure, or after the cover 8 has been detached from the curler 1, it may be placed on the steam ~o~
generator 12 for the purpose of heating it while hair is being curled on the curler 1.
Before using the cover 8, water droplets deposited inside the cover 8 should be removed by shaking it by hand.
As described earlier, by soaking a sufficient volume of high-temperature steam into the porous material 6 pro-vided on the cylindrical core 4, by curling hair on the resulting heated curler 1, and by placing the cover 8 on the curled hair, the hair is enclosed by the curler 1 and the cover 8, so that high-temerature steam or water from the curler is confined in this enclosed space and affects the curling of the hair, The hair is kept enclosed by the curler 1 and cover 8 until these parts are cooled down~ After cooling, the cover 8 is removed. At this time, the curler 1 can also be detached easily. As a result, a portion of the hair treated on the curler is suitably curled.
Since a lock of hair can be curled freely by the above-mentioned method according to the present invention, quick and positive hair curling can be carried out by any person at any place. In particular, even if a steam gener-ator is not available, hair curling can be performed even when on a journey by use of a cover and curler heated and humidifed by steam from an available hot-water container.
This method is simple and convenient. Also, the cover can be easily attached to the curler without special means.
The cylindrical core and rims can be securely engaged by press fitting, whereby there is no danger of undesired disengagement. Overall manufacturing cost can be reduced easily.
In the aforesaid curlers, the rims are provided inte~
grally at the right and left ends of the cylindrical core, and hair is curled between both rims and enclosed by a cover. The use of the rims, however, will disturb speedy hair curling with a lot of curlers. In other words, omission of the rims as shown in Fig. 4 enables quick, smooth hair curling to be carried out.

Hair curling methods in which hair curlers are used with electric heat or chemicals have been widely~employed in the past. In recent years, however, an alternative hair curling method has been developed, e.g. as disclosed in Japanese Patent Publication No. 53-6897. The hair curler and hair curling method disclosed in the aforesaid publication have, however, not been very successful in practice.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a hair curler and a hair curling method which are easy to operate not only for professional use but also for private use and possibly for portable use, by means of improving the known hair curler and hair curling method.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a hair curler assembly comprising: a cylindrical 0~
core having opposed ends, an outer periphery between - said opposed ends, a hollow interior, and at least one hole interconnecting the outer periphery with said hollow interior, wherein one of said opposed ends is closed and the other has an opening interconnecting with said hollow interior to permit steam to be introduced from a suitable source into said hollow interior; a layer of porous ma-terial of high water-retaining ability located on said outer periphery of said core and covering said at least one hole; and a cover for enclosing said layer of porous material and for holding said assembly in place on a user's head when a lock of said user's hair is wound around said layer of porous material and said cover is located thereover.
Preferred embodiments of the invention are described in the following with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring to the drawings, a hair curler and a curl-ing method according to the present invention will be described.
A hair curler l has a hollow portion 2, a cylindrical core 4 having an appropriate number of through holes 3 and rims 5, 5' provided at opposite ends of the cylindrical core 4. The cylindrical core 4 is enclosed by a porous material 6 having high hygroscopicity, i.e. high water-retaining ability. One of rims 5 is provided with an opening 7, at the center thereof, which is connected to the hollow portion 2, and the other rim 5' is of solid construction. A cover 8 is used with the hair curler l, and consists of a generally U-shaped body 9 whose length is equal to that of the cylindrical core 4, and right and left end plates 10 each having a slot ll, at the center thereof, whose radius is e~ual to that of the core cylinder 4O
Both ends of the porous material 6 may be in contact with the rims 5, 5' to fully enclose the core cylinder 4, or may be positioned slightly apart from the rims 5, 5'.
When this hair curler assembly is used, the slots ll of the cover 8 are engaged with the core cylinder 4 ~z~o~
provided inside the rims 5, 51 either directly or via the - porous material 6.
The core cylinder 4 and the rims 5, 5', may be manu-factured separately and assembled together thereafter;
or as shown in Figures 2 and 3, one rim 5 and the core cylinder may be formed integrally and the other rim 5' removably engaged with the o~her end of the core cylinder 4. In either case, the respective parts, preferably made of synthetic resin, can be press fitted and engaged together.
Another embodiment of the present invention, as illustrated in Figure 4, consists of a cylindrical core l which has a hollow portion 2, a closed end, an open end 7 and a number of through holes 3 in a shell thereof; and a hygroscopic material 4 provided on the cylindrical core l. In this embodiment, no rim is provided at either end of the cylindrical core l, because the rims will disturb speedy curling with a lot of curlers. In other words, the lack of rims ensures quick, smooth hair curling.
A steam generator 12 having a first steam outlet 13 and an array of other steam outlets 14 is of arbitrary construction, and is not necessarily limited to the type shown in Figure 5, thus allowing the use of any type of hot-water container. In the hot-water container shown in Figure 5, a hot-water inlet is used as a steam outlet.
The use of the hair curler assembly will be described 10~91~
in the following. The hair curler 1 is located so that - the opening 7 of one rim 5 thereof is placed on the steam outlet 13 of the steam generator 12 while it is generating steam. The cover 8 is placed over the steam outlets 14.
~t this time~ the cover 8 may still be attached to a hair curler 1 as shown in Figure 5. As a result, steam enters the inside of the cylindrical core 4 of the hair curler 1, and then soaks into the enclosing porous material 6 via the through holes 3 of the cylindrical core 4. Accord-ingly, the porous material is impregnated with a large volume of high-temperature hot water. After that, the hair curler 1 is detached from the steam outlet 13 of the steam generator 12, and the cover 8 is removed from the hair curler 1 if any.
Hair 'a' is curled on the porous material 6 provided on the cylindrical core 4 of the hair curler 1 as illus-trated in Figure 6. Immediately after that, the cover 8 is placed over hair 'a~ curled on the curler 1 in such a manner that the slots 11 of both end plates 10 of the cover are engaged with ends of the cylindrical core 4 provided inside the rims 5, 5' at opposite ends of the curler 1. Thereby hair 'a' is sandwiched by the curler 1 and the cover 8 as illustrated in Figure 7.
If the cover 8 is not attached to the curler 1 dur-ing the curling procedure, or after the cover 8 has been detached from the curler 1, it may be placed on the steam ~o~
generator 12 for the purpose of heating it while hair is being curled on the curler 1.
Before using the cover 8, water droplets deposited inside the cover 8 should be removed by shaking it by hand.
As described earlier, by soaking a sufficient volume of high-temperature steam into the porous material 6 pro-vided on the cylindrical core 4, by curling hair on the resulting heated curler 1, and by placing the cover 8 on the curled hair, the hair is enclosed by the curler 1 and the cover 8, so that high-temerature steam or water from the curler is confined in this enclosed space and affects the curling of the hair, The hair is kept enclosed by the curler 1 and cover 8 until these parts are cooled down~ After cooling, the cover 8 is removed. At this time, the curler 1 can also be detached easily. As a result, a portion of the hair treated on the curler is suitably curled.
Since a lock of hair can be curled freely by the above-mentioned method according to the present invention, quick and positive hair curling can be carried out by any person at any place. In particular, even if a steam gener-ator is not available, hair curling can be performed even when on a journey by use of a cover and curler heated and humidifed by steam from an available hot-water container.
This method is simple and convenient. Also, the cover can be easily attached to the curler without special means.
The cylindrical core and rims can be securely engaged by press fitting, whereby there is no danger of undesired disengagement. Overall manufacturing cost can be reduced easily.
In the aforesaid curlers, the rims are provided inte~
grally at the right and left ends of the cylindrical core, and hair is curled between both rims and enclosed by a cover. The use of the rims, however, will disturb speedy hair curling with a lot of curlers. In other words, omission of the rims as shown in Fig. 4 enables quick, smooth hair curling to be carried out.

Claims (4)
1. A hair curler assembly comprising:
a cylindrical core having opposed ends, an outer periphery between said opposed ends, a hollow interior, and at least one hole interconnecting the outer periphery with said hollow interior, wherein one of said opposed ends is closed and the other has an opening intercon-necting with said hollow interior to permit steam to be introduced from a suitable source into said hollow interior;
a layer of porous material of high water-retaining ability located on said outer periphery of said core and covering said at least one hole; and a cover for enclosing said layer of porous material and for holding said assembly in place on a user's head when a lock of said user's hair is wound around said layer of porous material and said cover is located thereover.

2. An assembly according to claim 1 wherein said opposed ends of said core are provided with enlarged circular rims and said cover fits over said layer of porous material between said rims.
3. An assembly according to claim 2 wherein said layer of porous material has opposed axial ends spaced from said rims by a distance corresponding to the thickness of said cover.
4. An assembly according to claim 1, claim 2 or claim 3 wherein said cover has a generally U-shaped body of a length substantially equal to that of the cylindrical core and end walls each provided with a central slot of width substantially equal to the diameter of the core for receiving and gripping the core.
