Abstract

ELASTICIZED DISPOSABLE DIAPER

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

A disposable diaper having elasticized crotch seals formed from elastic member secured to the backing sheet within 3/4 inch of the absorbent pad and under such tension as to eliminate transverse pleats in the crotch area while minimizing the size of the crotch seals.

Description

3~S

B~CK~ROUN~ OF THæ INVE~rION

~ N
This invention relates to disposable diapers and more particularly to an elastlcized and contoured diaper, DESCRIPTION OF Tl~ PRIOR ART

In the past elasticized contoured diapers have u.S .
been developed such as that disclosed in -the/patent to Buell, No. 3,860,oo3, lssued January 14, 1975, for "Co~tractable Side Portions ~or Disposable Diaper" wherein elastic strips are secured to the crotch portions o~ the diaper and spaced at least 3,/4 inch from the abosrbent pad to form elasticized crotch seals for securement over the legs of the infant to prevent loss of fluid from the interior o~ the diaper along the legs o~ the infant. The elasticized strips were placed more than 3~4 inch ~rom the absorbent pad in order to prevent pleats forming transversely o~ the crotch area o~ the diaper.

Another diaper is presently in production in which the elasticized strips are less than 3/4 inch from the absorbent pad for the productlon of the transverse pleats in the crotch area of the dlaper ~or the purpose of increasing the absorbent capacity at the crotch area of the diaper.
However, lt has been found that these pleats may act as a channel resulting in excessive diaper leakage and the pleats in the crotch area make the in~ant's bottom uncomfortable when sltting especially while the diaper isnot saturated, 3~$

S~MM~RY OE TIE INVENTION
The present invention provides a disposable diaper comprising a backing sheet, an absorbent pad on said backing sheet and including an upper wadding shee-t, a -top sheet over-lying said absorbent pad, said top sheet being secured -to said backing sheet on at least two opposite peripheral edges -thereoE, opposed elastic members extending in straight lines the Eull length of said pad and being secured in stretched cond.ition to said backing sheet in the central portions of said two opposite peripheral edges to define crotch seals along the side edges of said diaper, said el.astic members being outwardly spaced from said pad and being less than 3/~ inch from said absorbent pad in said central portions, said absorben-t pad being of an hour-glass shape defining ears spaced :Erom said crotch area, said wadding sheet overlying said pad including said ears, a portion of said elastic members being bonded to said wadding sheet in stretched condition and overlying the full length of said ears, said wadding sheet being movable relative to said absorbent pad to control the tension on said elastic members and to eliminate transverse pleats in the crotch area of said pad, the tension on said elastic members being such that there will be only pleats along said crotch seals and no pleats transversely of the crotch area of said diaper.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DR~WING
Figure 1 is a plan view of a di.aper constructed in accordance with the concepts of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken along the plane of line 2-2 in Figure 1 through the crotch portion of the diaper; and, Figure 3 is a transverse view taken along -the plane of line 3-3 in Figure 1.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF T~E INVENTION

l~ith contlnuing reference to the accompanying drawing, whereln like re~erence numerals designate slmilar parts throughout the various views, reference numer~ 10 generally designates an elasticized and contoured disposable diaper constructed in accordance with the concepts o~ the present lnvention. The diaper is of an hour-glass con~igura-tion having a crotch area 12 and ~our portions of greater width de~ining ears 14~ 16, 18 and 20. The diaper includes a backing sheet 22 of an impervious polyethylene or poly-propylene filma A -top sheet 24, pre*erably of non-woven or polyethylene or polypropylene fibers, ls preferably heat sealed by hot melt lines to the backlng sheet along the peripheral edges o~ the diaper. An absorbent pad 26 is disposed between the top sheet 24 and the backing sheet 22 and may be of wood ~luf~ or the llke. An upper wadding sheet 28 and a lower waddlng sheet 30 are provided~ the pad and the wadding sheet conforming generally in contours to the hour-glass shape. A pair of elasticized strips 34 and 36, which are provided with adhesive on at least the bottom surface thereof and optionally on the top sur~ace thereof, are bonded by their adhesive to the ~acking sheet 22 immediately ad~acent the pad 24 and in all events less than 3/4 inch ~rom the pad. The strips 34 and 36 may extend only the length of the crotch area 12 or may overlie the earred portion of the upper wadding sheet 28~ as shown in Fig. 3, so that the tenslon on the heat sealed backlng sheet and top sheet prov~ded by the elasticized strips is such that the pleats are only formed in the crotch seals fo.rmed by the elasticized strips and portions l~o and ~2 ou-twardly thereof and between the elasticized strips and the pad9 while no pleats are formed in the crotch area 12 due at least in part to the sliding action of the top wadding member 28 relative to the pad 26. The top and bottom wadding sheets may be formed of paper or tissue.

Claims (3)

THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
1. A disposable diaper comprising a backing sheet, an absorbent pad on said backing sheet and including an upper wadding sheet, a top sheet overlying said absorbent pad, said top sheet being secured to said backing sheet on at least two opposite peripheral edges thereof, opposed elastic members extending in straight lines the full length of said pad and being secured in stretched condition to said backing sheet in the central portions of said two opposite peripheral edges to define crotch seals along the side edges of said diaper, said elastic members being outwardly spaced from said pad and being less than 3/4 inch from said absorbent pad in said central portions, said absorbent pad being of an hour-glass shape defining ears spaced from said crotch area, said wadding sheet overlying said pad including said ears, a portion of said elastic members being bonded to said wadding sheet in stretched condition and overlying the full length of said ears, said wadding sheet being movable relative to said absorbent pad to control the tension on said elastic members and to eliminate transverse pleats in the crotch area of said pad, the tension on said elastic members being such that there will be only pleats along said crotch seals and no pleats transversely of the crotch area of said diaper.
2. A disposable diaper according to claim 1, wherein said top sheet and said backing sheet are bonded together along the peripheral edges thereof.
3. A disposable diaper according to claim 1, wherein said top sheet is heat sealed to said backing sheet.
