It aims to perfect the device that is the subject of the ~ nde no. 332,401 filed in Canada on July 24, 1979:
Several methods and devices have been proposed in the past to carry out directed drilling.
According to US Patent No. 3,365,007, the action of a jet is used fluid properly oriented to locally destroy formations and create a cavity to which the drill bit will be drawn. It is easy to understand that a 1 ~ such device es, t little precislcar action ~ of the jet, and therefore the deviation obtained, will be different depending on the hardness of the geological formations. In addition, it is necessary to use a particular trepan provided with a nozzle where the fluid jet escapes.
, '', According to another method described for example in the British patent pic n 1,139,908, in les b_evets US nS 3,593,810, 3,888 3 ~ 9 and 4,040,494 or in French patent no. 2 297 989, a deviateurienvelop-pant a portion of the drill string most often in the vicinity of the trap.
This deflector device is provided with fingers which can be moved radially with respect to to the axis of the lining. By judiciously moving these fingers which take ~ t support against the wall of the drilled well, one causes a decentering of the axis of the trepan by r * ~ port to the axis of the well and therefore, a modification of the drilling trajectory. ~ with such devices, drilling progress is discontinuous and is effected by successive passes between which the Eor ~ ge is stopped to allow movement - cementing of the deviating device. This results in considerable time losses which increase the cost of a Eorage operation.
With the current drilling technique using a motor ~ ~ background, we proposed to interpose between the farage column and what we app-- ~ shovel the "drilling head" ~ assembly comprising the trepan, and the downhole motor) a raacord angle bend determined. So whenever you want to change the drilling trajectory ~ it is necessary to go up the entire drilling column surface to fit a new elbow fitting whose angle is chosen according to of the desired deviation.
~; AgainY. so-called articulated elbow connections have been proposed.
, of the type of that mentioned in the Erançais patent n 2 175 620. These fittings generally consist of two tubular parts hinged together and being able to have only two positions relative to each other. In the first posi-tion, the two parts of the fitting are aligned (the angle of the . ~!:
,, '~ ~' 11 '~' 7055 connection is then zero), while in the second posL ~ ion, the two parts of the fitting make between them an angle of determined value. Just like for elbow fittings of the previous type, it is necessary to go back to the surface at m ~ ins a component of the fitting when the desired deviation is not compatible with the angle that the two parts of the fitting can form between them.
, v ... . ...
_. . .
To avoid these drawbacks, devices have been proposed which allow as long as you vary the angle of the fitting without requiring it to be raised face. ~ n fitting control device is indicated in the request for French patent published 2,177,920 and in GB patent 1,494,273.
~ In French patent application 2,432,079, as well as in French addition certificate requests published 2 453 268 and 2 453 269 is described an elbow fitting made up of two tubular elements forming between them a variable angle by remote control.
This elbow fitting, whose angle is adjustable from the surface of the ground, essentially comprises a first and a second ele ~ ents tubu-laires assemble.s them, the second element being able to pivot around an axis forming an angle with the axis of the first element, means for securing the tubular elements and telecom means in rotation mandes to modify / step by step ~ the angular setting of the second element tu-bulai ~ re compared to the first.
~ ~:
; ~ To control the rotation of the second tubular element and emp ~ expensive ~ an untimely rotation of the elements of the fitting after a modification - ~ their angular setting, it is necessary to have recourse to auxiliary means lock.
The present invention relates more particularly to an advantageous mode for making these auxiliary locking means which are of dimensions ., :

More precisely, the present invention is claimed here as an elbow fitting: at: angle variable by remote control, 'comprising a first element tubular fixed at the end of a drill string and a second tubular element secured to a bottom motor driving; rotating a drilling tool, these elements tubular being assembled together, the axis of the second 10. tubular element which can rotate about an axis of rotation which makes an acute angle with the axis of the first tubular element, the axis of rotation and the axes of the two tubular bodies. being distinct from each other and contributing substantially at the same point, means remote-controlled to change the angular position at will of the second element with respect to the first by pivoting the axis of the second element. around said axis of rotation and ~ `means to immobilize one with respect to the other ; said tubular elements in an angular position relative chosen, said tubular elements being assembled by a rotating socket, the axis of which constitutes .: said axis of rotation and which is crossed by a shaft connecting these elements, slidably mounted in these elements remaining in rotation with a first '25 ~ 'of them, said connecting shaft having a position of locking in which it also becomes integral - in rotation of the second tubular element and which it can "~

It causes the axial displacement ~ ent of the shaft 20 downwards dcs Figures 2A and 2 ~ against the action of the spring 25.
The finger 26 which was first in position 26a (fig.
4), reaches position 26b. In this position, the grooves 23 of the shaft 20, and 24 of the lower body 2, are released from each of the very ~ disengaging in rotation the shaft 20 and the body 2. The displacement axial of the shaft 20 continues and the finger 26 reaches the position 26c, by causing the body 2 to rotate around the axis ~ of ~ n angle ~ 2 not (being an integer), the tubular bodies 1 and 2 of the elbow fitting then making between them a determined angle between O and 2 ~.
Otherwise, the end of the ring 103 comes into contact with the fingers 26 which empecher.t an axial displacement supplemcnt ~ ire of this ring ~
.
11 ~; "7055 Continued movement of the shaft 20 causes the unlocking lage of the ring 103, allowing the retractable fingers to be placed opposite the holes 106 housings in the ring In3. Under the action of the res-spells 101, the fingers 100 come out of their housings and their ends penetrate into the grooves 107 linking in rotat; on the shaft 20 and the body 2. As shown in the left part of FIGS. 2A and 2B, the fingers 26 are then in position 26d (fi ~. 5).
The shaft 20 is then subjected to the sole action of the spring 25.
~ The shaft 20 is pushed axially upwards & Figures 2A and 2B. Grâ-- ~ ~ 10 this at the cooperation of the fingers 100 and the grooves 107, the finger 26 axially sedeplace from the position 26d to the position 26e (fig. 4), that is i.e. without relative rotation between the two tubular bodies 1 and 2.
~ ~, At this time, the ring 103 comes into contact with a shoulder 108 of the body 1 which axially mobilizes it. Additional travel of the hollow shaft 20 causes the displacement of the doi ~ ts 26 of the position 26e at position 26f ('fig. 4) as well as the penetration of the fingers 100 in their accommodation, 1ents 102 thanks to an inclined guide rail 111, and the verrauillage of the ring 103 on the shaft 20. The assembly is then in the position illustrated on the right-hand side of FIGS. 2A and 2B.
A new rotation of the body 2 can then be obtained by ~ repeating the above operations.

Modifications may be made without however shot of the csdre of the present invention.
For example, we can provide control means to ensure that after its movement, the shaft 20 has returned to its position initial tion.
