Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

A connection device is provided for connecting a coaxial cable to a component on a circuit board. The circuit board is of a type provided with rows of connection pins along one face. The pins coact with connection blocks having female contacts along one side and connection pins associated therewith along the other side. A screening sleeve of a co-axial cable may be thrust between four pins on the connection block. A pin, centrally situated in relation to these four pins, is soldered to the central conductor of the coaxial cable. The screening sleeve is provided with longitudinal slits which are approximately as wide as the thickness of the pins but shorter than the pins, so that when the sleeve is thrust between the pins the latter come into engagement with the edges of the slits and retain the sleeve.

Description

632~

The invention relates -to a connection device for connecting a coaxial cable to a component arranged on a cir-cuit board, of the type having one edge provided with rows of connecting pins which coact with connection blocks containing female contacts on one side and connection pins associated with these on the other side.
Relatively expensive arrangements are necessary for connecting a coaxial cable to a component on a circuit board of the type mentioned, since such a cable cannot be connect- .
ed simply to the connection pins on the edge of the board; it is necessary to replace the pins with coaxial connection sleeves in which the pin of the coaxial connector can be in-serted.
An object of the invention is to enable a coaxial cable to be connected to a component mounted on a circuit board, while using the customary connection pins.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a con-nection device for connecting coaxial cable to a component mounted on a circuit board, comprising a first block pro-20 vided on one face thereof with rows of connection pins, asecond block provided on one face thereof with rows of con-nection pins and on another face thereof with rows of female ;: contacts adapted to engage the rows of connection pins on the first block, the connection pins of the second block be-ing arranged in groups of a predetermined number, a central : terminal within each group of pins for connection to the central conductor of the coaxial cable, and a screening sleeve for the coaxial cable provided with longitudinal slits shorter than and approximately the same width as the connec-tion pins of the second hlock, the screening sleeve being dimensioned relative to the groups of connection pins such that it can be thrust between the connection pins of each -- 1 -- ~

group with the connection pins thereof becoming engaged wlthin said slits to retain the screening sleeve in position.
The invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-Figure 1 schematically illustrates in perspectivea connection device in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a side view of the connection device;
and Figure 3 is a plan view of the connection device.
Figure 1 illustrates connection device in perspec-tive. A coaxial cable 1 is to be connected to a component 3 mounted on a circuit board 2. Along its edge portion the board 2 is provided with contact blocks 4, of which one is shown raised in relation to the circuit board for the sake of clarity. The block 4 is provided along one side with rows of bent pins 15, which are soldered to the circuit board and, via printed conductors 31, 32, 33, for example, are connected to the different components. Along its other side the block 4 is provided with straig~t pins 14, which are fixed in rows of holes in the same way as the pins 15 for engagement with a connection block 5 having female contacts 6. In the exten~
sion of the female contacts the connection block 5 is provid-ed with connection pins 7, forming rows in the same way as ` the other pins 14 in block 4.
The coaxial cable 1, which is to be connected to the connection block 5, has a cylindrical screening sleeve 8 connected to its outer conductor and having an outer diameter such that it can be inserted between four pins 7a-7d on the 3~ block 5. The sleeve 8 is provided with ~our slits 12 which are shorter than the pins 7. Durin~ assembly the central conductor 1 is first soldered to the central pin 9, subsequent l~6~3~a to which the sleeve 8 is thrust between the pins 7a-7d such that these engage in the slits. Since the pins are pointed, they are pressed outwards as the sleeve is pressed in, and the sleeve is thus kept in a fixed position by engagement be-tween the pins and the edges of the slits. This arrangement thus provides a removable coaxial connection from the cable 1 to the component 3.
Figures 2 and 3 show, in front and plan view respec-tively, the coaxial connection before and after the sleeve has been thrust between the pins. The inner contour of the pins lies along a circle having a somewhat smaller diameter than that of the sleeve. When the slee~e is pressed in the pins 7 glide in the slits 12 until they come into contact with the end wall of the slits. Since the ends of the pins are bevelled, the pins glide obliquely outwards along the outer wall of the sleeve, as can be seen from the right-hand side of Figure 2. As a result of the elastlc retention it is also possible to solder the pins to the wall of the sleeve 8, as indicated by 16 in Figure 2.
It will be seen that the invention provides a much simpler connection device than the previously used devices, particularly existing standard connection devices having screening sleeves provided with longitudinal slits .~

THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLU-SIVE PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
1. A connection device for connecting coaxial cable to a component mounted on a circuit board, comprising a first block provided on one face thereof with rows of connec-tion pins, a second block provided on one face thereof with rows of connection pins and on another face thereof with rows of female contacts adapted to engage the rows of connection pins on the first block, the connection pins of the second block being arranged in groups of a predetermined number, a central terminal within each group of pins for connection to the central conductor of the coaxial cable, and a screening sleeve for the coaxial cable provided with longitudinal slits shorter than and approximately the same width as the connection pins of the second block, the screening sleeve being dimensioned rela-tive to the groups of connection pins such that it can be thrust between the connection pins of each group with the connection pins thereof becoming engaged within said slits to retain the screening sleeve in position.
2. A connection device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said predetermined number is four.
3. A connection device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the connection pins of each group surround a circle, the diameter of which is somewhat less than the outer diameter of the screening sleeve, so that when the sleeve is thrust in, the connection pins move in the slits until the end portions thereof come against end walls of the slits, whereupon they are deflected outwardly.
4. A connection device as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the screening sleeve is welded or soldered to the connection pins.
