A simple device to trim veneer as it is peeled, replacing the conventional spur knife. The device comprises a knife holder that is attached to each end of the pressure bar securing a knife blade that scores the bolt as it rotates against the pressure bar.
VENEER TRIMMING DEVICE
INVENTOR
Donald C. Walser ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A simple device to trim veneer as it is peeled, replacing the conventional spur knife. The device comprises a knife holder that is attached to each end of the pressure bar securing a knife blade that scores the bolt as it rotates against the pressure bar.
Description
6 r BACKGROUND OF T~ INVENTION
This invention relates to the cutting of veneer and particu-larly to a device for trimming veneer as it is peeled.
Veneer is presently trimmed with the use of spur knives. Con-ventional spur knives are mounted, one at each side, to the lathe headand positioned to score the bolt prior to peeling.
A problem with conventional spur knives is that debris tends to accumulate around the knife and pressure bar causing marking of the rota-ting veneer bolt surface. When this occurs, the lathe head is opened to c]ear the obstruction. The veneer produced during this clearing opera-tion must be discarded because of surface damage and nonuniformity of thickness. In some cases the lathe must be stopped to remove the debris, resulting in a considerable loss of production time.
SI~MMARY OF T~E INVENTION
An ob~ect of the present invention is to provide a simple device for trimming veneer which avoids the accumulation of debris.
It has been found that veneer can be effectively trim~ed by trimming devices that are attached to the ends of the pressure bar of a veneer peeling apparatus.
In accordance with the present invention, the trimming device comprises a knife holder for attachment to an end of the pressure bar and a knife blade adapted to be retained by the holder in a protruding posi-tion so as to score wood as it traverses the wood contacting surface of the pressure bar.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THe DRAWINGS
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a veneer lathe incorporating a veneer trimming device in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmented view showing a portion of the pressure bar and trimming device of Figure 1.
Figure 3 illustrates a fragmented view of a pressure bar incor-porating another embodiment of a trimming device ln accordance with the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
With reference to Figure 1, the veneer peeling apparatus 1 includes a pressure bar 2 and a veneer peeling knife 3 for peeling veneer 4 from the bolt 5, in a convPntional manner.
With reference to Figures 1 and 2, mounted on the pressure bar

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
With reference to Figure 1, the veneer peeling apparatus 1 includes a pressure bar 2 and a veneer peeling knife 3 for peeling veneer 4 from the bolt 5, in a convPntional manner.
With reference to Figures 1 and 2, mounted on the pressure bar
2 is the veneer trimming device 6 of the present inventionO The veneer trimming device comprises a knife holder 7 attached to the end of the pressure bar 2 by suitable means, shown as bolts ~. The knife holder 7 retains a knife blade 9.
In operation, with reference to Fig. 1, the knife blade 9 is secured, by means of holder 7 and bolts 8 against the end of the pressure bar 2, in a protruding position to score the wood bolt 5 as it traverses the wood contacting surface of the pressure bar 2. For proper trimming, the depth of scoring must be at least equal to the thickness of the veneer 4 being peeled by peeling knife 3.
Figure 3 illustrates an alternative embodiment of the trimming device. The pressure bar is provided with a recess 12 adapted to receive the knife blade 13. The blade 13 is retained by holder 14 and bolt 15.
Figure 3 also illustrates the use of an extension 16 for ~he pressure bar 11, which allows trimming of the veneer to varying widths according to mill requirements. The extension 16 is designed to be attached to the end of the pressure bar 11 such that the wood contacting surEace of the extension is co-extensive with that of the pressure bar.
The trimmed width of the veneer will then be equal to the length of the pressure bar plus that of the extension or extensions used.
Preferably, the recess 17 will be dimensioned similar to recess 12 such that the knife blade can be mounted directly to the pressure bar 11 defining the narrowest trim width for the particular pressure bar. A
number of extensions having different widths may be made avai]able to allow a variety of trim widths.
Claims (2)
1.
