Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
The jewellery display unit described comprises the combination of a holding and display device together with a clip device for supporting an article of jewellery;
the holding device includes a relatively rigid backing and a cushion pad formed of resilient material; the clip device includes an intermediate portion traversing the backing and the pad, a rear portion extending sub-stantially perpendicular to the intermediate portion and a front portion defining an opened hook with a free end portion that sinks into the cushion pad; the cushion pad yieldingly allows the passage of the closed loop when it is forcingly applied against the pad so that the loop may be engagedly supported in the hook; the pad and the sunk free end portion thereby prevent accidental detachment of the article of jewellery from the clip device.

Description
The presen-t invention relates to a jewellery disp]ay unit for holding and displaying articles of jewellery.
The persons who usually manipulate these devices, such as clerks in jewellery stores, are fre~uently asked to hook and unhook articles of jewellery from the display units so that the potential buyer may have a closer look at the jewellery. On the other hand, because of the frequent manipulation of these devices, it is important that the jewelleries be firmly attached to prevent accidental detachment.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a display unit for articles of jewellery which makes it easy to insert or remove the articles from the display unit while still retaining them in a secure manner when the display units are handled. This is achieved by providing a novel structural combination of a cushion pad with a clip device, the latter having a free end portion that sinks into the cushion pad which yields to pressure to allow passage of the article of ~ewellery to the clip device.
The present invention therefore relates to a jewellery display unit which comprises: in combination, a holding and display device having a relatively rigid backing and a cushion pad formed of resilient material and secured to the backing; and a clip device for supporting the article of jewellery having a sub-stantially closed loop, the clip device having three portions that include an intermediate portion which traverses the backing and the pad, a rear portion that is bent relative to the intermediate portion to prevent easy retraction of the clip device from the holding and display device, and a front portion that defines an opened hook with a free end portion that sinks into the cushion pad. The pad and the free end portion of the clip device prevent accidental detachment of the article `~
of jewellery frorn the clip device due to the free end portion of -the clip device being sunk into the cushion pad.
Other objects and further scope of applicability of the present invention will become apparent from the detailed description given hereinafter. It should be understood, however, that this detailed description, while indicating preferred embodiments of the invention, is given by way of illustration only, since various changes and modifications within the spirit and scope of the invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
_ _ Figure 1 is a perspective view of a jewellery display unit with suspended jewelleries, made in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view showing the clip device mounted to the holding and display device;
and Figure 3 is another embodiment of a clip device made in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to Fig. 1, there is shown a jewellery display unit 10 which comprises three parts: a frame 12, a holding and display section 14 and one or more clips 16,16' for supporting jewelleries 18,18'.
Referring to Fig. 2, the jewellery holding and display device 14 comprises a relatively rigid backing 20, preferably a cardboard material which is easily pierceable, a cushion pad 22 made of compliant resilient material and a ]ayer 24 of decorative material, such as velvet.
The clip device 16 has an intermediate portion 26 which traverses the backing 20, the cushion pad 22 and the decorative layer 24. The clip device 16 has also a rear portion 28 which extends parallel to the backing 20 and which may be affixed thereto by means of an adhesive;
3~
the rear portion needs not be perpendicular to the intermediate portion 26 but it must be sufficiently bent in relation thereto so that the clip is prevented from easily slipping out of the ho]ding and display device 14.
The clip has, at the front of the display device, a curved hooked portion 30 that terminates with a free end portion 32 which sinks into the cushion pad 22.
In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 2, the jewe]lery 18" includes a closed loop portion 34 which is engaged,in the hook portion 30 of the clip device. It is not essential that loop 34 be entire]y closed to operate satisfactorily with the jewellery display unit of the present invention. I~owever, it is important that the loop be sufficiently formed so that it does not detach from the clip device as a result of its own configuration.
For inserting loop 34 into portion 30, the jewellery is forced into the cushion pad in the area of the end 32 so that the resiliency of the pad yieldingly allows reception of the loop 34 into the hook. The natural tendency of the cushion pad to return to its normal position closes the hook so that the jewellery 18"
will not easily become detached from the clip. To remove the jewellery, loop 34 is forced back into the cushion pad to by-pass the end 32 of the hook.
Referring to Fig. 3, there is shown another embodiment of a clip device made in accordance with the present invention. The clip device 16' has an inter-mediate portion 36 which traverses the backing 20, the cushion pad 22 and the decorative layer 24. The rear portion 38 also extends perpenuicular to the section 3b and may be adhesively secured to the backing 20. In this embodiment, the difference resides in that the extremity 42 of the hook portion 40 extends away from the decorative layer to thereby facilitate insertion of the article of jewellery. But still, in -this embodiment, the free end portion of the hook sinks into the cushion pad to perform the same function as the hook described in Fig. 2.
