The present invention relates to an improvement in the manufacture of sodium chlorate by electrolysis and specifically a way to improve performance FARADAY in the case where electrolysis cells are used equipped with titanium anodes coated with an electroactive layer such as platinum-iridium or Luthenium oxide.
The electrolytic manufacture of sodium chlorate is essentially carried out by electrolysis of a solution sodium chloride.
The reactions to the electrodes are as follows:
- at the anode, the following chlorine is formed:
6 C1 --- ~ 3 C12 + 6th (1) the chlorine formed at the anode reacts with the following water:
3 C12 + 3 H20 '3 H + 3 Cl + 3 MC10 (2) 3 HC10 <- ~ 3 H + 3 C10 (3) 3 H20 ~ ~ 3 OH + 3 H (4) and the hypochlorite formed is transformed into chlorate according to the react1on:
6 C10 + 3 H20-- ~ 2 C103 + 4 Cl + 6 H + 3 2 + 6 e (6) This reaction would be responsible for the release of oxygen that is observed during electrolysis, this release being the essential cause of the drop in yield F ~ RADAY.
- at the cathode, the following hydrogen is formed:
6 H + 6th; 3 H2 (7) The hypochlorite formed in the cell can be reduced with the following hydrogen:
C10- + H - - ', Cl- + HO ~ (8) This parasitic reaction (8), also generating 11 ~ 4888 a decline in yield FARADAY is generally combated by adding sodium dichromate at a rate of 2 to 10 g / l in the electrolyte.
Another cause of the decline in FARADAY yield comes from the fact that the chlorine that forms at the anode can escape directly from the cell without being absorbed, by following balances C10 + H ~ - H C10 HC10 + H + Cl ~ C12 2 there is a certain chlorine vapor pressure above solution and chlorine can escape from all the surface of the liquid.
The reaction (5) is essential in the genesis of the chlorate and this reaction is favored by a given pH
variable from 6 to 6.5, the optimal value depending in fact : of the operating temperature. To maintain this pH
optimal, so an acid solution is added to the electrolyte, usually hydrochloric acid, which allows in addition to compensate for possible chlorine losses.
This addition is made according to the procedures classics - either in the cell supply solution - either directly in the cell - either in two ways simultaneously and it is generally automated thanks to a regulation of pH.
Under operating conditions usually encountered NaC103 g / 1 0 to 700 NaCl g / l 320 to 120 sodium dichromate g / l 2 to 10 operating temperature 55 to 85C

~ 2 96%
2 3.5 C12 0.2 to 0.5 ~
and the FARADAY yield is greater than 92 ~.
Attempts have been made to improve this yield. Various solutions have been proposed which all boil down to improvement anode coatings, as indicated in the BF.2.187.416.
The Applicant has developed a process which provides a 1 to 3 point increase in yield FARADAY by direct intervention on the electrolyte.
The method according to the invention consists in adding to hydrochloric acid used to maintain the optimum pH, phosphoric acid at a rate of 1 to 2 kg of phosphoric acid than 85% per tonne of sodium chlorate produced.
The increase in yield depends on the yield of electrolyte, cell technology and conditions procedures used.
The following examples do not illustrate limiting the method according to the invention.
1) Electrolysis is carried out according to the mode standard operating room in a 35,000 A industrial cell fitted with titanium anodes with a coating based on ruthenium dioxide. The cell is powered by the composition solution:
NaCl g / l 210 NaC103. g / l 325 dichromate g / l 7 NaC10 g / l 0.3 Ca + Mg mg / l 35 Fe, Co, Ni mg / l 2 the feed rate is 120 l / h.
550 ml of 33% HCl are added continuously to the cell.
The cell works with a current density from 2000 A / m2 to 70C. The pH is 6.3.
The composition of the solution leaving the cell is:
NaCl g / l 110 NaC103g / l 520 dichromate g / l 7 NaC10g / l 1.5 Ca + Mgmg / l 15 Fe, Co, Ni mg / l 2 the gases formed during electrolysis have the composition next H2 96.7%
2 2.9 C12 0 ~ 4%
the FARADAY yield is equal to 92.7%
2) under the same operating conditions and according to the process of this patent application, we add to hydrochloric acid a continuous flow of 220 ml of H3P04 thermal origin at 10 ~. The composition of the gases formed is then :
H2 97.6 C12 0.4 ~
and the FARADAY yield reaches 94.5%.
There is therefore an improvement in the yield of 1.8 points.
Under the same electrolysis operating conditions that in Example 1, 10% phosphoric acid is added obtained wet, with a content of 0.15 g of acid per liter of electrolyte.
The oxygen level in the gases is lowered by 0.3%, which increases the FARADAY yield from 92.72% to 93.32 ~.
