Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
The fuel economy of an internal combustion engine can be improved by adding to the lubricating oil used to lubricate the crankcase of said engine from 0.25 to 2 weight percent of a fatty acid ester of glycerol in combination with 15 to 25 millimols per kilogram of zinc O,O-di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphorodithioate.
Description
~13~ 3 003 This invention relates to a method for improving 004 the fuel economy of an internal combustion engine.
006 With the crisis associated with diminishing 007 amounts of fossil fuel and the rapidly increasing prices 008 for this fuel, there has been a great deal of interest in 009 improving fuel economy, that is, the number of miles 010 obtained in a given vehicle per liter of fuel.
011 Some fatty acids of glycerol are known in the in-012 dustrial oil area, for use at low concentrations. Some 013 are known to be oiliness agents; however, since piston 014 and ring lubrication is predominantly hydrodynamic, gains 015 in fuel economy through the use of additives in the lubri-016 cating oil which reduce the coefficient of friction in 017 mixed lubrication will probably be small and difficult to 018 assess.
020 It has now been found that if 0.25 to 2 weight 021 percent of a fatty acid ester of glycerol in combination 022 with 15 to 25 millimols per kilogram of zinc O,O-di(2-023 ethylhexyl)phosphorodithioate is added to the lubricating 024 oil used to lubricate the crankcase of an internal comb~s-025 tion engine a measurable improvement in the fuel economy, 026 that is, the miles per liter of fuel, of the engine is 027 observed.
028 DETAILED DESC~IPTION OF THE INVENTION
029 Adding from 0.25 to 2 weight percent, and prefer-030 ably from 0.40 to 1.25 weight percent of a fatty acid 031 ester of glycerol along with 15 to 25 millimols per kilo-032 gram of zinc O,O-di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphorodithioate to a 033 crankcase lubricating oil significantly improves the fuel -034 economy of the internal combustion engine. Specifically, 035 improvements in fuel mileage of from 2 to 3% on the aver-036 age have been observed in engine tests. This fuel economy 037 improvement can be obtained in both compression-ignition 038 engines, that is, diesel engines, and spark-ignition ., ~
q~
:t 137~;3 engines, that is, gasoline cngines.
~ atty acid esters of glycerol can be prepared by a variety of meth-ods well known in the art. Many of these esters, such as glycerol monooleate and glycerol tallowate, are manufactured on a commercial scale. The esters useful for this invention are oil-soluble and are preferably prepared from C8 to C22 fatty acids or mixtures thereof such as are found in natural products.
The fatty acid may be saturated or unsaturated. Certain compounds found in acids from natural sources may include licanic acid which contains one keto group.
Preferred fatty acids are oleic, stearic, palmitic, myristic, palm-itoleic, linoleic, lauric, linolenic, and eleostearic, and the acids from the natural products tallow, palm oil, olive oil, peanut oil, corn oil, neat's foot oil and the like.
Particularly preferred acids are oleic acid and the acids from tal-low.
When glycerol is esterified with a fatty acid, mono-, di- and tri-esters form. Commercial glycerol monooleate, for example, contains a large amount of dioleate and a minor proportion of trioleate. Mono-, di- and tri-esters and mixtures thereof are contemplated for use in this invention.
When, for the sake of convenience, the common term such as "glycerol mono-oleate" is used, the di- and trioleates are to be included within the meaning of glycerol monooleate.
The lubricating oil to which the fatty acid ester of glycerol can be added can be any hydrocarbon-based lubricating oil. The hydrocarbon lu-bricating oils may be derived from synthetic or natural sources and may be paraffinic, naphthenic or asphaltic base, or mixtures thereof. A variety of additives are ordinarily present in lubricating oils used to lubricate modern internal combustion engines. These additives include antioxidants, dispers-ants, rust inhibitors, foam inhibitors, corrosion inhibitors, antiwear agents, and a variety of other well-known additives.
