Abstract

A B S T R A C T

A spiking device for pin-setting units in bowling alleys is used to lock the ropes of individual pins when these are not to be lowered onto the floor of the unit. The device is accommodated in the two halves of a housing and contains an electromagnet, the armature of which is connected, by means of an articulated connecting rod, to a rope-clamping shoe. The rope-deflecting roller drives, through a pinion, a gearwheel which, by means of a slip clutch, pivots an arm carrying a magnet co-operating with a switch. The design permits spiking devices of this kind to be made compact and inexpensive.

Description

The invention relates to a spiking device for pin-setting units in which the pins are suspended from ropes, the said device having a rope-deflecting roller and an electromagnetically actuated rope-clamp.
Devices of this kind are used in pin-setting units so that pins, each suspended from a cable, can be selectively prevented from descending. This is required, for example, after an initial throw of the ball, if some of the pins are left standing and these must, if possible, be struck in a second throw. In this case, only the pins which did not fall on the first throw must be lowered to the floor. Pins which are lifted, with their ropes, in a centering device, and which are not to be lowered for the time being, are clamped to their ropes in the lifted position. This type of game is know as "spiking".
It is the purpose of the present invention to provide a spiking device which is inexpensive to produce, requires little effort to assemble, and is reliable in operation.
The present invention is especially adapted to spiking devices of the aforementioned kind and is charac-terized in that a housing, divided longitudinally into two parts, accommodates the entire device. The axis of a rope-clamping shoe, the axis of the rope-deflecting roller, and the electromagnet of the device are all sup-ported in both parts of the housing.
Spiking devlces of this kind can be made very compact and substantially more satisfactory, without - 1~ ~'~

impairing their reliability. Since a spiking device of this kind is associated with each of the bowling pins, such simplification is well worth while in a pin-setting unit.
The significant features of the present invention are illustrated in the drawings attached hereto, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a view of the spiking device with one half of the housing removed;
Fig. 2 is a section along the line II-II in Fig. l;

Th~- spiking devices secUred to a horizontal part of the frame of a pin-setting unit are each acco~nodated in tuo housing-parts 2,3, made of plæstic and differing ~rom each other in shape. The said housing-parts enclose ab electromagnet 4, a rope-cla~ping shoe 5, and & rope-~e~lecting roller 6. A rope 7 is used to rai~e the pins, not sho~n in t~le drawing, into a centering device and thereafter to lo~er them bacl~ to the a.ley. The lowering of individual pin~ rnay be prevented selectively by means of rope-clamping shoe 5 in co-operaT,ion with electromagnet 4.
~ lectrosagnet 4, located above rope-cli~mping shDe 5 contains an irjon armature 8 of substantially cylindrical shape which enters centrally in-o the interior o~ a coil 9. The yoke of this electro-ma~net ~onsists of three iron platelets 10,11,12 bearing loosely a~ainst each other and attracted to each other by ~;agnetic force as soon as the coil is energized. The said platelets lie 1008ely in notches ior~ed in the halves of the hou~ing. ~rranged at the lower end of armature ~ is a transverse bore in which an arg-led connectin~ rod is articulated. The other, similarly angled end OI
cont,ectin_ ro~ 13 enga~es in a bore 14 in rope-clamping shoe 5.
The sai~ ~ore ic located in th~- vicinity of axis 15, a~mature 8, eng~gin~ in coil 9, bein~ in approximate ali~nr,~ent with the s.~id axic.
Clarpinc shoe 5 is mounted pi~otably upon a cylindrical axis 15 inserted into the housing, and ha~ a clamping surface 18 in the for, o~ a ca~i~ such that increasing pi~oting in the direction of arro~
lncre~ses the distance fro~ axis 15, thus cla~,ping rope 7 bet~een 11330~6 the sai~ c~ and surface 19. The position oI tne ca is snown ir.
dotted lines in ~ig.l. The design of this rope-cl~.p is such that a rel~tively short current-puise i8 sufficient to move ~oe ~ into itP clanping position, where it re~ains even if electro~agnet 4 i5 switched off. ~elease is effected by a current-pulse in the oppo-site direction. As sllown l~lore particularly in ~ig.2, a~is 15 of the rope-cla~pin~- shoe i8 ~ounted in bearings in halves 2,3 OI the housing. Axis 20 of rope-deflecting roller 6 is also mounted in the first and second housing part 2,3. The hub of the said roller carries a pinion 26 which is either integral with the said roller or is secured thereto in such a ~anner that it does not rotate t~,ereon.
Tr.e sai~ pinion enga~-es witn a gear ~7 which rotates freely u~on a tubi~lr part ~. Ar~ 30 on thi~ tubular p~rt, extending beyon~
secon~ housing rart 3, ca~ries a per~anent magnet 31 co-operating with ~n electro~gnetic switch 44, preferably a reed-switch (Fig.5).
Tubular part 2~ rotates upon a pin 25 which iB a press-fit in first housing-part 2. ~ear 3~ is pressed, by ~eans of a ~eak spring 32 and an inter~ediate washer, a~ainst a radially-projecting annular shou_der 3~, thus producing a frictional or sli~ping clutch, so that when gear ~7 rotates, tubular part 28, and therefore permanent r.aEnet 31 seated upon arm 30, is carried along and also rotates, the pivoting moveL~ent of the said arm being limited by stops 46,47, The position of the stop is adjustable, so that the angle through which arm 30 moves may be made larger or smaller. Adjustable stop 47 is fflated upon an indexing wheel 36 which may be pivoted in arcuate slots 4~ and is g~ided by two projecting sleeve parts 3B.
locate~ at t.e outer ends of the said sleeve parts are washers 39 whiril ~efine ~he axial play of inde~ing wheel 36. Thus the position o~ stop 47 may be adjuSted by mea.-ls of an indexing lever 43 ~n-il~30Z~

gaginL in teeth 40 of ~heel 36. This m~kes it possible to li:.,ittne ~ivot-angle throuLh ~lhich ar~ 30, and perrnanent ~a~net 31 co-operatin~ ~ith svJitch 44, .ilUS~ tra~el.
Tiousing pa~ts 2,3 are located in relation to each other by means o~ members ~hich enga~e v~ith each other, preferably in the form of scre~s 45 or bolts en~aging in matching holes in the opposite part.
The design of housing parts 2,3 is such that parts accommodated in ti.e intsrior thereoI need ~erely b~ inserted. This s~eeds up asse~Jbly subtantially an~ no adjusting i8 necessary, since the shape o~ the housin~ ensures that the p&rts assume predetermined Fostions in relation to each other. The unit consisting of ~irst and secon housing parts 2,3 is secured rigidly .o the autornatic pin-setter by mean~ of bo1ts, not sho~n.
